Steel Magnolias.
Get the tissues ready for this one girls it's a really weepy! I have seen this film many times and I still cry every time! It also has humour as well!
This is a story about a group of six southern women from Louisiana, we follow their relationships and see how their friendship grows stronger and stronger through good times and bad.
The story starts on Shelby's (Julia Roberts) wedding day the happiest day of a girl's life and the proudest day for any mother but not in M'Lynn's (Sally Fields) case. As the story unfolds we soon realise that for every bit of happiness there is sadness to, but as Shelby says later on in the film 'I would rather have 2 minuets of something wonderful than I lifetime of nothing special'.
M'Lynn has some heart wrenching decisions to make and it is with the strength of her dearest friends that she is able to carry on. I will not go into great detail, as I would not like to ruin the film for anyone intending to watch it:
Shelby: Shelby is played by Julia Roberts - one of her earlier roles Julia brightens up the screens with her charismatic laugh and brings you to tears with her heart breaking performance.
M'Lynn: played by the wonderful Sally Fields. Sally is outstanding in this film she is so believable the emotions she feels eject from the screen and into your heart so much that your eyes start to well up and before you know your crying.
Truvy: Dolly Parton plays this good old country girl; she has left the singing alone and graces our screens as the bright and cheerful beauty parlour owner. Through out the bad time Truvy can always find a smile even when things aren't going well with her own life she can always find the time for others.
Clariee: A recent widow played by Olympia Dukakis brings a touch of elegance to the southern look. A wealthy woman she has fun spending her money to try and occupy her time. Clariee values her friendships greatly and knows they are far more important than any amount of money.
The fabulous Shirley Mclean plays Ouiser; her character certainly adds the humour with her snipping at Drum (Tom Skerritt) M'Lynn's husband. Ouiser is not someone who looks on the bright side of life but when her friends need her she'll be there.
Newcomer Anelle is played by Daryl Hannah, we watch Anelle grow and change throughout this film. At the start she is a shy mysteries stranger trying to get through her past by the end she is a beautiful woman ready to start her own life. Anelle is able to cope with the bad through her beliefs and often shares them with the others if not a little inappropriate at times.
These woman are so different but combined together they create a unique force that will conquer any situation good or bad. And that's what we call friendship!
Steel Magnolias was made in 1989 and was direct by Herbet Ross who also directed films like Footloose and Boys on the side. Robert Harling who also wrote First Wives Club wrote the play and screenplay.
