team come up against a classic science fiction premise when a small community appears to have been taken over by some alien influence. With O'Neill temporarily absent, Carter heads up investigating the mystery. She finds it leading back to the traumatic experience of when she was kidnapped (a season before in "Desperate Measures"), and the secret of the townsfolk leaves them with something bound to influence the future. In "Abyss" O'Neill knew there would be a terrible price for offering his services as host. In a bizarre instance of memory loss, that price is paid when he's captured by a System Lord. Repeatedly tortured to death and then revived, Jack finds support from the most unexpected of sources. Any fan that feared Michael Shanks had left the show for good was pleased to see Daniel's return this episode. --Paul Tonks

Well if you are looking at this you are probably a fan of SG1, if not then let me bring you up to speed.....
So the ancient Egyptian gods were in fact from space (see original Kurt Russell Star Gate movie) this it the TV series spin off which takes it basic premise from the movie.
The Stargate is a device that allows (almost) instant travel to any other Stargate in the galaxy. Think wormholes.
OK so that is how they travel, they met in the movie a creature called a Gould, which is a parasitic life form that needs a human host to control, this is done by getting into the back of the neck and controlling the body by attaching itself to the spine and using the body as a host. There is a discrepancy between the movie and the series, but hey I'm not too bothered by that.
The team is made up of 4 people,
2 air force (Jack O'Neil - Leader and Samantha Carter - tech bod) Daniel Jackson the guy who deciphered the Stargate symbols (see movie) and is great with languages (as not all people they meet speak English) and finally a Jafa (foot solders for the Gould who incubate the Gould lava until they are ready to take a host - this gives them great strength and rejuvenation powers)
In this season Daniel has died (season 5 finale) and is replaced by Jonas Quin, who is a budding scientist and is also good at languages (funny that!) I feel he is a good addition to the team.
The team go out and collect new technology to protect Earth from the Gould, who routinely attempt to destroy us as we are a threat to their domination of the Galaxy.
Let me tell you about the Gould, they are a bit like feudal lords (although they assume the role of Gods to the Jafa and require that they are worshiped by all) they have armies of Jafa and they set up bases on different planets have star ships (based upon the pyramids) and some really cool weapons. There is a ruling council called the system lords. But this does not stop them from attacking each other and attempting to steal each other planets, to increase their sway over the people living there. Tealc was Prime (head man) to Apophis one of the System lords, but defected to SG1 after realising that the Gould were not Gods.
The Gould were the main threat in the 1st few seasons, but as SG1 get more allies and better weapons they have had other enemies to contend with.
The Asgard are a technology advanced race (look like greys - Roswell type aliens) and they have a treaty with the Gould to leave Earth and other key planets alone, this effectively safe guards earth for most of the time from the Gould.
Jack O'Neil is a sarcastic wizard of Oz quoting smart ass, Sam is sexy and clever and can get the team out of most jams, Telac is the stoic silent type that kicks ass and Jonas makes up for Daniel by the way of thinking out of the box.
OK so that's the basic jist, I could go on but really it is better to watch a few of the catch-up episodes as they do it better.
So the team have been going through the gate for 5 seasons and they have found lost of enemies and allies, cool gadgets that allow for great plot diversity and lots of mad plan to get out of trouble...like blowing up a sun to get a baddie.
Anyway, season 6 starts with the new boy trying to make a name for himself after the death of Dr Daniel Jackson. There is some resentment that it was partly Jonas's fault that Daniel died (radiation poisoning from a reactor that went into overload)
I like Jonas's character as he is less sappy regarding the moral standpoint, which is what Daniel became and to be honest with you I found him a tad irritating at points.
There is a general move from exploring new planets to a more reacting to things that happen to the team in this season, they still go out and explore but not as much.
The replicators put in an appearance half way into the season and there is an interesting development in the symobiant situation that could lead to the end of reliance of the Jafa on them, which would help the revolution.
I admit that the price for the box set might put some people off but, if like me you can wait for the price to come down to say £45 instead of £65 then it becomes a much better deal. I watch these shows again and again.
Other things that happen this season include:
A dull recap of the whole programme, with I admit a few comic moments A Great show about a couple of geeks that try and help SG! when they get taken hostage (Dr Flox from Enterprise) A few really good eps with Anubis in..whata guy! At last a spaceship built...and we get to see it hijacked by a Gould Maybourne pops up for a quick appearance A touchy feely one for Tealc And a dramatic season finale with Anubis and Daniel...bring it on!
The think I like most about this type of Sci-Fi is that it takes issues that we have today and puts them into a context that allows lots of room for discussion, a different way of looking at things.
By using different planets you can look at racism, sexism and other issues that we face. It also gives us the chance to imagine what we could face if we ever get off our asses and go into space for real.
The extras on this box set are standard, interviews, behind the scenes, commentary, look at special effects etc...
Hope this is helpful, but if you like SG! you will probably love this box set (I know I do)
