Stargate-SG1 leads on from the hit film 'Stargate'.
The stargate was discovered at an archaeological dig in 1928. Many experiments were carried out in the mistaken belief that the device was in fact a weapon. In 1994 a man named Daniel Jackson managed to decipher the missing link which would allow the stargate to work.
The 1994 film was based on the adventure of Colonel Jack O'Neill and his military [U.S.A.F.] team, accompanied by Daniel Jackson.
Originally, the stargate device which allows inter-planetary travel over thousands of light-years, was thought to only go to the planet featured in the film 'Abydos'.
In the TV series Stargate-SG1, an evil man of the "Goa'uld" comes through the stargate, and captures a member of the facility where the stargate is been stored. Believing that the gate only goes to the one planet Abydos, a team lead by Jack O'Neill is sent through to investigate. It is then that the team discovers that there are literally thousands of Stargate devices placed on various planets in the galaxy.
The Mandate for SG1 and the SGC [StarGate Command], is to procure weapons and technologies, to protect and safeguard the wellbeing of the planet Earth. Along with Tial'c, who is an alien who aided SG1 in their escape from an alien prison, the members of SG1 explore and have many adventures on many hundreds of different worlds.
SG1 have faced many evil foes, and made many good friends along the way. The humour involved in many cases is well thought out. Many actions sequences, and indeed story arcs impress many who watch them. All in all, a very good series that keeps its fans entertained from beginning to end.
While I do own 3 Stargate-SG1 VHS tapes, I also own series 1+2+3 on the DVD box sets, this series is ideally suited for DVD viewing. Episodes which play in a grand story arc can be watched back to back, allowing those minor and insignificant things that allow future events to take place, to be noticed. Yet due to the nature of the writing of this TV series, there are many episodes that can be watched alone, which bring to light many mini adventures of their own.
Though there had been much confusion as to particular release dates of the box sets, problems were eventually sorted out. The only problem was that because series 1 DVDs had never been released individually, the boxes and DVD content was arranged especially for the box set. This didn’t allow for extras.
Box sets of later Stargate series will of course have some very good extra material. Yet will only be a collection of the 5or6 DVDs that were released individually. Why hold out for paying a price to get them all in a nice box? Why hold out from buying DVD’s and waiting for the box sets. There is of course great thinking here.
By the time you have got to season 4 box sets, many people will already own a substantial amount of Stargate DVDs, meaning they only have to go out and buy 1or possibly 2 DVD’s to complete the set. Alternatively allows you to purchase the episodes you really like without having to spend £50 outright getting the box set. Then, should you feel you want to complete the set, you only have to outlay £20 or so at once. Allowing you to selectively buy the new series 6 DVD’s, when they are released, while slowly amassing the classics of earlier Stargate-SG1 series.
