This was one of those films that I had been meaning to see for ages but have only just got round to it! I am a bit of Take That fan (shhh don't tell everyone!) and they performed the theme tune tot this song. When this song was released I decided to give this film a go! I am a fan of fantasy films as you can lose yourself in them and remove yourself from reality!
There are also smaller parts played by well known faces such as David Walliams (Little Britain) and Ricky Gervais.
The Plot
Stardust is based on the original novel by author Neil Gaiman and directed by Matthew Vaughn. The film is based around a small village called Wall, it's name coming from a wall nearby that is a passage into another magical world. The future father of Tristan manages to get passed the wall guard and ends up falling for a slave girl of a local witch. Nine months later the wall guard arrives with a basket containing baby Tristan!
The film then moves forward in time eighteen years and Tristan is now a fully grown young man. He is besotted with local posh girl Victoria and will do anything in his power to win her hand in marriage. This brings him to promise her the recently fallen star they have just seen. Victoria gives Tristan a week to bring the star to her and only then will she be his.
On the other side of the wall in the village of Stronghold the King is on his deathbed and attended to by his remaining sons, all eager to take his crown. The King removes a necklace from his neck (The Power of Stormhold) and states that he who can restore the ruby to its red colour will become King. The clear ruby flies out of the window and collides with a star, hence the fallen star that both villages witness.
The film then unfolds and not only Tristan and the Princes are seeking the star but also three witches. Stars restore the youth and produce eternal life. Tristan is the first to find the star and necklace but will he manage to keep hold of 'it'? I state the word 'it' as the star is not as you would think it to be! And so the film continues in the quest for the star and the power of Stormhold.
My Opinion
From the start of the film I have to say I was hooked! The directing is brilliant and the special effects and soundtrack keep you interested. The cast of the film is second to none. Michelle Pfeiffer and Robert DeNero will not disappoint you in this film and play their characters really well. The lead actors Charlie Cox and Claire Daines are two that I am not very familiar with but played their roles brilliantly.
The plot of this film is great and it makes you wonder how peoples imaginations work to be able to come up with a story like this! It is a true fantasy film complete with magic, unicorns and flying boats! It revolves around a love story so it is a little bit predictable as to the final outcome but if it had a twist at the end of the film I would have been disappointed.
Overall I would say that this is a great film for all the family. It has been rated PG but I think a 12 certificate would have been more suitable as there is some violence and moderate terror. Maybe I am just getting old and the public are more tolerant? This is definitely a film to watch!
