I am a big kid at heart, I still love to watch Disney and animated films. When I saw the trailers for Stardust on television I was captivated, a smattering of famous faces, tales of far away lands and treasures, right up my street. Although I didn't really plan to go and see it, lack of time, money and motivation. But I was pleasantly surprised when my boyfriend called me on Thursday morning and asked if I wanted to go to the Premier of Stardust that evening at 5.15pm. It was a bit of a push but I finished work a bit earlier and headed off to the cinema, The Plaza in Truro.
Luckily my boyfriend had booked the tickets because when we arrived the queue was out the door, cinemas always seem to start all their films at the same time. But we didn't have to wait we just went to the ticket collection point, this is a slightly worrying idea like the Tesco self service checkouts used to be, you simply but you card into a slot, them remove it and out pop your tickets.
We went to find our seats, I was surprised about the small number of people who were watching the film, though this may be due to the inflated price of Premier viewings. The other annoying thing was that everyone had chosen to seat right in the middle of the cinema, so to get to our seats we had to hustle past lots of people with long legs or bags on the floor, lovely!!!
So, anyway we finally got seated and sat down to watch the trailers of forthcoming attractions film, I just wanted to mention this as the first one they showed was for Stardust, how silly. Nevermind, after about fifteen minutes of this tedium the film started……
The film starts many moons ago, the film begins in a small called Wall in England, the village is given this name for the long wall which surrounds it. There is, of course, a gap in the wall which is guarded 24 hours a day, the guard claims this gap is a portal to another world, but through some clever trickery a young man does manage to pass through. Once on the other side he finds the magical land of Stormhold, where he meets a lovely young lady who says she is a princess trapped by a wicked witch. But while the witch is away the princess may play. Nine months after his enchanting
trip the guardian of the wall delivers a small basket to the young man, with a baby named Tristan. The narrator tells the viewer that this is the story of how Tristan becomes a man and throughout the story we do see some transformations. Tristan, now aged eighteen, has a crush of the local beauty, Victoria. Of course, she is not interesting, she has her eye on Humphrey an arrogant, well to do handsome boy. Not one to be put off Tristan pursues Victoria and a week before her birthday takes her out for champagne, they see a shooting star and he says that for her hand in marriage he will cross the wall and bring her back that star. And, off he goes. Crossing the wall proves to be slightly more difficult than it was in his father's day, the guard gives him a good ass kicking on his first attempt. He does discover that his mother lives on the other side of the wall, his father also gives him a note which contains a magical candle. By using the candle Tristan quickly finds the star and by using an enchanted chain he ties the star to himself so as not lose her. Meanwhile three witches have also seen the star fall, and apparently it is well known that eating the heart of a star makes you immortal. One of the witches soon sets off on her way to find the star for herself. At the very same time the current king of Stormhold is on his death bed, he calls together his remaining sons to decide who should be the next king. There were seven brothers but only four remain, their sister has also mysteriously disappeared. The king decides to turn his ruby clear and whoever can restore its colour will be the next king, but he sends it into space and when it hits a star it causes her to fall to Earth or Stormhold, however you look at it. The brothers slowly kill each other until there is only Septimus left, he learns of the star's presence and is also keen to get to her heart and rule for all time. As you can see this tale really comprises three stories which overlap as everyone is looking for the star and Tristan has the star.
The film is great fun to watch, there is a lot going on and plenty of action. All the stories contain lots of comedy and adventure. Tristan and Yvaine, the star, are nearly captured by the wicked witch but end up on a magical ship which floats through the sky harvesting lightening. Lamia, the evil witch, turns a boy into a goat, magics up an inn to trap the star to no avail. Septimus, the remaining prince kills lots of people as he follows the star, who is wearing his ruby, not that he is aware of that.
There are also plenty of twists and turns throughout the film, it certainly keeps you on the edge of your seat right to the end. The ending of the film is also packed with action, though of course there is eventually a happy ending well for the good guys anyway.
Some nice quotes from the film "A philosopher once asked, "Are we human because we gaze at the stars, or do we gaze at them because we are human?" Pointless, really..."Do the stars gaze back?" Now *that's* a question." "Because, let's be honest, it's a field. Look. Do you see another world out there? No, you see a field. Do you see anything non human? No, and you know why? Because it's a field!" "Hmm... Murdered by pirates, a heart torn out and eaten, meet Victoria... Can't quite decide which sounds more fun…"

This film was cast by Lucinda Syson, I thought that the casting of this film was genius but then I looked back over her repertoire which is even more impressive. She cast Children of Men, V for Vendetta, Syriana, Batman Begins and Troy to name but a few. As you can see there is more than a few famous faces included

in this film, which is also Charlie Cox's debut, he is nothing but brilliant throughout. Claire Danes is absolutely stunning, after playing Juliet this is a very fitting comeback, she really shows her true potential in this film. Robert De Niro, plays a burley captain and a sensitive role model superbly, he also adds loads of humour. Michelle Pfeiffer makes an outstanding wicked witch, you really begin to believe the character really exists, I expecting the witches to be very over the top, but they certainly were not. With such a brilliant cast and everyone acting so convincingly I think this really made this film the success I think it soon will be.
Neil Gaiman wrote the original novel on which this film was based between 1997 and 1998. The story was written in four volumes. These books were adapted for the film in a brilliant screenplay by Matthew Vaughn and Jane Goldman. Not having read the books myself I cannot really comment on the adaptation from the books. Soon after the books were written Gaiman was in talks with Miramax, but all died down. It was not until 2005 that Paramount Pictures
The film was also directed by Matthew Vaughn, I thought I had heard this name before , he also directed Layer Cake back in 2004. The direction of this film is another brilliant element which really contributes to the overall moving nature of this film.
The main soundtrack of this film is Rule the World by Take That. There are of course other songs used throughout the film, including songs called Snowdrop, Shooting Star and Creating the Inn. I always think that music can either make or break a film and the music in this film is incredible.
The story was filmed in Wester Ross in the Scottish Highlands and the Isle of Skye. Scenes in the woods were filmed in Herfordshire. Filming in Scotland took place from April 2006 and filming was complete by July 2006.
The film is certificated as PG, this is because there is some violence and risqué humour. At the cinema there was an advisory notice which stated that some scenes may be difficult for children under eight to deal with.
The film was released in UK cinemas on 19/10/2007 The film was released in mid August in America and will be available on DVD over there from 18 December
The film runs for 130 minutes, which at times seems like a bit too long but for the most part the action of the film makes up for it.
I paid £6.00 a ticket to see this one. I would say if you are really into the fantasy genre go to see this one at the cinema as it is a pretty intense experience watching this on the big screen. But for the most part I would advise waiting for the DVD release. Don't think I'll be buying the DVD though. I think this is the sort of film that I could only watch the once, though I'm sure some people could watch it again and again. I think that this film is comparable to Narnia, though not quite as good, what could really compare?! I would recommend this film to anyone, it is full of action and adventure that everyone will love. It is also nice for the slightly older audience to see some well established actors perform roles you never thought they would get away with. The kids will also love this one, there truly is something for everyone.

My girlfriend loved this film, although from the trailers I couldn't help thinking it looked a bit stupid... I have a feeling I may have to give in and watch it somehow! Jim
