and vision of author Neil Gaiman's fantasy graphic fable, is a transportive journey into a world of true enchantment, which fans of theHarry Potterbooks will enjoy as well as will adults looking for the perfect date movie. The tale is a not-so-simple love story and adventure, set in 19th century England, and an alternate universe of witches, spells and stars that turn human--and hold the key to eternal life. Young Tristan (played with wide-eyed vigour by Charlie Cox) vows to retrieve a fallen star for the most beautiful girl in the village, the shallow Victoria (Sienna Miller), and in his quest finds his true love--in a true "meet-cute" moment (by Babylon-candle-speeding into the just-crashed human incarnation of the star, Claire Danes). Much of the film involves the duo's journey back home--though home for Tristan is his village, and home for the celestial Yvaine is, of course, in the heavens. There are villains, notably Michelle Pfeiffer as the vain witch who seeks the fountain of youth a fallen star can give, and the seven venal sons of the dying king of the mythical realm, backstabbing, grasping, and hilarious--even in death as a ghostly Greek chorus. While the sparks of love between Tristan and Yvaine are resonant and touching,Stardusttruly succeeds as a brilliant fantasy yarn--and as a comedy with more than its share of belly laughs. Much of the humour belongs to Robert De Niro, who plays a notoriously wicked air pirate who is secretly a bit light in his swashbucklers. Ricky Gervais has a small but memorable role essentially channeling his character from Extras, including his catchphrase, "Are you having a laugh?!" It's been a good year for film, franchises revived, big screen blockbusters, small low budget gems. I have seen more movies in 2007 than any single year, and I have found myself so many times writing "This is my film of the year!" Now thankfully with a few days of the year left I can again say about Stardust that this IS my film of the YEAR!
Stardust is a film I kept putting off, not for any dislike, but simply because I felt I might enjoy the movie and that personally I feel it was released at the wrong time. I suspected that Stardust would be a Christmas film, and having just finished watching it, I feel my original view was correct.
Stardust is a magnificent movie for the whole family, it does not matter whether your an art-house fanatic, and action aficionado, or a horror hoarder, if you watch Stardust and don't enjoy at least 75% of it then you really don't have a pulse.
When Dunstan Thorn decides to defy the rules that their village runs by in respect to a wall that surrounds it and cross through, his quest for the unknown and adventure lands him nine months later with a child called Tristan. Now an adult Tristan (Charlie Cox) too has a quest for adventure, his adventure however is restricted to his village; Tristan has a pain in heart otherwise known as love. Victoria (Sienna Miller) is the girl in the village that everyone wants, and someone way out of Tristan's league. This little fact has no impression however on Tristan, and he sets himself the task of trying to seduce her.
Across the wall in a more mystical world the death of a king leaves the sons fighting to become the rightful heir. Their quest begins as a star alls from the sky, and a battle to become the last man standing, plus of course a jewel sent out into the stratosphere causing the star to fall.
On the other side of the wall Tristan makes a vow to Victoria, that he will return a week from that day, with the star they have just seen fall on the other side of the wall. If Tristan succeeds he will win the hand of Victoria in marriage. What Tristan of course never knew what lay beyond the wall; a world with feuding princes, a trio of witches with plans to be immortal, sky pirates, and a star delivered to the world in human form. Tristan finds himself battling evil worse than he could imagine, all for love, but what if love existed in places he never expected?
At just over two hours in its running time Stardust is an adventure in every sense of the word, those put off with long run times should not have any fear here, and there is seldom chance to catch your breath. Stardust echoes the great family classics of the past, with traits of the present. Aiming its sights at all areas of the audience from young to old, it blends seamless jokes and anecdotes to all areas. There is love and romance, plus more than a parting glance of action and adventure. Stardust features all the things that make these adventures great, we have always loved magic and witchery and this is the basis of the movies heart.
Let's be honest however realistically Stardust is nothing new, its storyline echoes 25 year old movie The Neverending Story in more than a handful of ways. You can also draw similarities with Harry Potter, Star Wars and the Sinbad adventures. Stardust is just a new way of turning out a series of older and highly successful movies and merging them into one solitary piece. What in my mind separates Stardust from these other movies is the fact that those obvious little plot passages that a story takes, normally saved for the ending are more often than not addressed no sooner has the thought "I know where this is going" entered your head. As a result you end up questioning the impending predictability of the movies finale, while you clearly realise that everything will be fine in the end, exactly how it will end stays a mystery.
Another point of interest is that despite the American funding, Stardust is very much a British outing, all of its executive roles are UK based individuals its script writer none other than Mrs. Jonathon Ross, Jane Goldman. Its casting is also majorly British, a wealth of popular British comedy actors fill more than two dozen roles in the movie everyone from David Walliams to Ricky Gervais. The movies sets so British, you can almost smell it. So it's a phenomenal tribute that Stardust was box office gold the world over, proving that Britain still has what the world wants.
There are some big name American stars filling some of the principle roles Michelle Pfeiffer is just astounding as Lamia the leader of our trio of witches. Looking stunning for her almost 50 year age, she reclaims her crown as leading lady in the role of the movies big villain. And even though her character is as cold as you can be, you cannot help but love Lamia, or are you in fact loving the actress as opposed to the character. Unafraid to face the future Pfeiffer's character ages dramatically as the movie progresses, having initially started old but using an element of an old conquest to reclaim a temporary youth. Robert DeNiro acts his most jaw dropping role as a reknown pirate type character with a penchant for fashion and all elements that might make him appear a little femme. A scene in which this one time Hollywood hardman dons make up, a dress and performs an impromptu can-can is so terribly wrong that it's right. It's amazing to see an actor of this status not take himself too seriously and to be able to really let go.
Relative newcomer Charlie Cox is great as the movies lead performer, charismatic and charming you like the guy no sooner has he appeared on screen for the first time. The journey of Tristan is carried out with you his passenger; you are literally living the adventure in a not dissimilar manner to the relationship between the Neverending Stories two leads, except this time it's you that's on the journey rather than an eleven year old boy carrying out a depiction, a representation of you.
I won't linger on this review because there is only so much you can say about a film without weakening its impact. I knew very little about the film before watching it, and in fairness that's the best way to see it; less most certainly is more here. But I'd like to end be reiterating my opening remarks, this movie is of exceptional quality, a real epic, you'll laugh, you'll be on the edge of your seat, and you might well cry.
Stardust is still at Cinema's doing matinee screenings of the bigger cinemas. For those eager waiting for the DVD however US releases are imminent and a DVD release is scheduled in time for Easter 2008.

...I saw the trailers for Stardust on television I was captivated, a smattering of famous faces, tales of far away lands and treasures, right up my street. Although I didn't really plan to go and see it, lack of time, money and motivation. But I was pleasantly surprised when my boyfriend called me on Thursday morning and asked if I wanted to go to the Premier of Stardust that evening at 5.15pm. It was a bit of a push but I finished work a bit earlier ... ...Luckily my boyfriend had booked the tickets because when we arrived the queue was out the door, cinemas always seem to start all their films at the same time. But we didn't have to wait we just went to the ticket collection point, this is a slightly worrying idea like the Tesco self service checkouts used to be, you simply but you card into a slot, them remove it and out pop your tickets. We went to find our seats, I was surprised about the small ...

Advantages: Sweet story, good actors, fun to watch. Disadvantages: Very predictable.
I have just gotten around to watching this film today and was actually amazed that there were reviews already. I'm 16 and PG always tends to put me off watching films but I decided I'd go as it was something to do, I loved it. I think the main reason I loved this movie was because of the amazing actors that were involved and the new actors that shone brightly in it (no pun intended). ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I did want to see this at the cinemas when I saw if first come out, except I was too busy and I couldn't arrange anything, so I waited for it to be released on DVD, but still that was expensive so I waited and waited until it became 3 for £20 in HMV and we managed 2 other DVDs to go with it, and bought it.
This film is a great film, its tag-line is: The fairy tale that won't behave. To be totally honest that doesn't help anyone really, and it's ... ...I didn't know, until recently, that it is an adaptation from the book of the same name, knowing this now, I plan to try and find it, hopefully it'll be cheap, and buy it. You'll have to wait for a review on it, however, as I have too many books and DVDs to review, I really don't know how I'll get through them all, but I do know I'll get to the end eventually.

love this film. My son bought it for my wife for Mother's Day, and we have just watched it. The extras, which include a complete run of the film but with commentary from Director Matthew Vaughn and Writer Jane Goldman are very informative and equally as fun as the film!!! I rate it at 4 stars out of 5, dropped from the maximum only due to a lack of CGI and a simple plot. In terms of enjoyment, it ranks up with the top films in my view, but it is too early to really rank it properly.
I am delighted that we own this, and I am positive that today will not be the first time we go 'Ah, yeah! Let's watch Stardust!'
The DVD is available to buy brand new now from Tesco for only £9, a very good price for a brand new release.

***INTRO***
I bought a PC with a DVD player in 2003 and decided to test it with what was then the new digitally remastered Bowie UK tour of 1973 (I was at the Romford Odeon Concert my 1st as a teenager). It was to be Bowies and The Spiders Farewell tour. It's cost £17.99 I ordered over the Internet for the 1st time. The product comes in as a smart black box in a plastic sleeve with embossed information concerning title and content. The box has some interesting graphics of Bowie with data about copyright. The box opens to reveal a single disc, a booklet and a poster. It is the recording of the concert at Hammersmith Odeon on July 3, 1973. The DVD lasts approximately 90 minutes and is a remix re master of the original film.

A refreshingly funny fairytale... The charming Danes shines brightest here (Box Office, 24/01/2008)
Pfeiffer and Strong ensure the story boasts some great bad guys, and Vaughn certainly knows how to make it all look great (Empire, 24/01/2008)
STARDUST is a beguiling pastiche of storybook magic... It's the closest the movies have come in a while to the nudgy, knowing fairy-tale enchantment of THE PRINCESS BRIDE (Entertainment Weekly, 24/01/2008)
Sophisticated in its execution, it is a movie that possesses a child's whimsical sense of wonder that propels the action, coupled with an adult sensibility that gives it emotional heft (Los Angeles Times, 24/01/2008)
Lush and whimsical... Brimming with charm and CGI and full to bursting with Proppian folktale staples (Sight And Sound, 24/01/2008)
An uneven but entertaining romp (Total Film, 18/10/2007)
So full of unselfconscious fun and adventure that you can't help but be swept up by its charms (Ultimate DVD, 24/01/2008)

DVD Description
Director Matthew Vaughn (LOCK, STOCK, AND TWO SMOKING BARRELS) takes his experience with credible crime capers and applies it to the fantasy genre in this charming but not too precious adaptation of Neil Gaiman's novel. The many threads of the story intertwine seamlessly, unfolding at an unforced pace that complements the movie's magical special effects. Charlie Cox (CASANOVA) stars as Tristan, a somewhat bumbling shopkeeper’s assistant in the sleepy English village of Wall, so named for the stone barrier that separates it from the magical realm of Stormhold. Tristan is in love with the beautiful, dismissive Victoria (Sienna Miller), who much prefers her other suitor, Humphrey (Henry Cavill), since he has travelled all the way to Ipswich to buy her an engagement ring. Tristan, in a last-ditch effort to win Victoria's affections, offers to bring her a fallen star they've just seen, and she agrees to marry him if he can deliver. Unbeknownst to Tristan, he is the product of his father's (Nathaniel Parker) sole excursion to Stormhold, where he had a tryst with a mysterious slave girl (Kate Magowan) who said she was a princess. As Tristan retraces his father’s steps he discovers that the 'star' is actually a beautiful young woman named Yvaine (Claire Danes). A trio of witches, led by a delightfully wicked Michelle Pfeiffer, wants to capture Yvaine to cut out her heart and gain eternal youth, while the three remaining sons of the recently deceased king (Peter O'Toole) compete with one another to find the gem Yvaine wears around her neck. With special effects that never outshine the performances and a sweet story peppered with hints of Gaiman's dark sensibility, STARDUST is a truly enchanting fairy tale.
