As one of the arguably biggest SW fans online, and webmaster of a SW site, I'm called upon to write a lot of reviews on all things related to the Galaxy Far Far Away.
Nothing gives me greater pleasure in reviewing, than the DVD set. For months waited, eager to see what the fourth disk, the Holy Grail to any good SW fan out there, would deliver to us.
And we were not disappointed.
The Films: The original trilogy is in its glory, slightly modified from the 1997 Special Edition, in particular some changes to the end sequence of ROTJ, as well as some little pieces to add more continuity to the prequels.
For those new to the saga, the opening crawls provide a good background info, to get you into the films easily. The plot is easy to understand, the action is excellent and as for the special effects, well SW was the film that revolutionised the way films are made, expect to be blown away.
Hayden Christensen is superimposed as a ghost like Anakin for the finale, something I had been wary about, but it comes out fairly well.
Boba Fett's voice is altered in ESB to sound like the AOTC Fett. Gotta love the little touches.
The Vader/Emperor scene in ESB is also altered, for the better in my opinion.
The Commentary: For all films the commentary is excellent, with people such as George Lucas and Carrie Fisher adding their thoughts to the films. Im not usually a fan of commentary, but it was nice to hear some facts and anecdotes on the saga whilst watching particular scenes.
The Fourth Disk:
First of all: The Empire of Dreams Documentary. OH MY GOD! Its almost a feature film in itself! A long tale of the SW trilogy, how there were problems, the trials, tribulations, and later success of the films. I thought I had known most of the stuff before I saw this, now I know how wrong I was to assume that. This is packed with miscellaneous info, interviews, facts and much more.
EpIII: The Return of Darth Vader was a cool feature also, as a member of theforce.net and Hyperspace, I got to see more stuff than this, but the clips were cool. Not many spoilers in it which is nice cos I know not all people want to know all the plot yet.
The rest of the features are likewise excellent, LucasFilm has come to be relied on for a good amount of extras in its films, and the box set is no exception. Web links are included for those who want to visit the main site.
Pretty much every Star Wars fan has wanted to get the box set on DVD for a long time. And we had waited, worried that Lucas wouldnt do it, then celebrated when it was finally given to us. The set doesnt disappoint. For any people new to Star Wars, the box set is a great way to get into the series, for the veterans, its just another thing to collect, and enjoy for a long long time.
