Firstly I couldn’t believe it when I found no reviews on this product, so just had to jump in there. I am a massive Star Wars fan, and thanks to my other half I’m now a proud owner of the Platinum 4 disc DVD Box Set. Just looking at them gets me all excited!!!!
Arrived on release date of Monday. In a nice looking box. This is the first time the original films have been released on DVD, they are the digitally remastered version, which is probably my only downside of this product, I just believe you shouldn’t mess with an already perfect piece of Art. Comes with the fourth disc of Bonus Material. I think this was a huge part of my excitement into receiving this.
Firstly touching on the films:
A New Hope – We watched this on the first night, and according to Chris Moyles should be played on Surround Sound at volume level 22, on movie setting, so just for humour we tried this, and I say louder, you just cannot beat the goosebumps you get as the 20th century fox music starts, and then silence, ready for the greatest theme tune ever. A little bit of a different start for the DVD Menu options, so that made a nice surprise. Apart from that and the digitally remastered bits, which most people have seen at the cinema, nothing is different, apart from the fact it’s on DVD, which in itself is a great thing.
The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi – Again, same as above. So can’t really say much other than great films on DVD.
THE BONUS MATERIAL DISC
Ahhhhhhhh the real reason for my review. This fantastic disc that will please any Star Wars Fan and is worth the cost of the DVD Box Set Alone. Firstly, the one and only downfall of this disc, you have to sit through 1 minute of copyright screen in different languages, so bear with it. Fantastic menu Screen, Features Documentaries – Trailers and TV Spots – Video Games and Stills – Episode III Preview. The Documentary is great, titled Empire of Dreams. Features all actors, and of course George himself. Lots of behind the scenes clips. Great flashbacks of the 1970’s, including the original naff trailer of A New Hope, featuring the original white lightsabers!!! Covers things like the release date being moved due to fears of being booted out by films such as Smokey and the Bandit, Hilarious. Also how only 40 cinemas took the film on originally for the release date 25th May 1977. A real great documentary for all you Star Wars Fans.
Under the trailers section you can see the original trailers for all 3 movies. Re-release trailers and TV Spots.
Now for Star Wars and X Box fans – there is a Star Wars battlefront demo on this disc, you just have to play it in the X BOX, I mean, how fantastic is that?
Great behind the scenes shots of all characters and how they came to be.
A great documentary on the lightsaber alone!!!
A preview of Star Wars III – I will admit I am no fan of the NEW Star Wars, Jar Jar spoilt it all for me, BUT and a big BUT, Episode III looks fantastic, so fingers crossed it’s going to be as great as the preview makes it look. I LOVE DARTH
Finally there is an exclusive DVD-ROM, this features keys to the website, fan club etc for great info, merchandise and daily features.
So much fantastic material on one precious little disc.
Sooooooo overall, I am in heaven. Not only do I get a great box set of 3 of the worlds greatest films, but I also get this fab extra disc that has so much on it, it’ll keep me happy for hours and hours. All those little extras like the X Box Demo, Trailers and Preview make it a real treat. I cannot recommend this enough for Star Wars Fans. And I am even impressed at the price. I paid more than that for the Digitally remastered box set on VHS!!!!
You have to buy or at least borrow this, NOW!
May the Force be with you.
