I first saw these on Toonami in annoying small episodes of 3 minutes each! This DVD brings together the first 20 episodes and allows you to watch them all in one go - a marvellous improvement!
The biggest selling point of this series is that it's the official bridge between Episode II (Attack of the Clones) and Episode III (Revenge of the Sith). Unlike every other novel, comic, game or film on the market, George Lucas said that this series is an accurate account of what happens between the two films.
The animation is very good, done by the same people who do Samurai Jack. These days animation can be far too intricate and people go OTT, forgetting the medium they are using. Along with the great animation is the strength of the characters, which comes from the original films but is also seen in characters exclusive to the animated series. Full marks to the people they got to do the voices because they are spot on, especially Anakin.
There are many great characters who we either don't see in the films, like Asajj Ventress, or don't get much time in the films, like Kit Fisto. It was also the on screen debut and introduction of Revenge of the Sith baddie, General Grievous.
My one gripe is that this covers episodes 1-20, but they made a further 5 episodes, each of 12 minutes in length, which aren't a part of this DVD. They could easily have added to this DVD or even made it into a double DVD set, and as the storylines lead in to Episode II it would have made sense to release the DVD before the film came out - too late now!
All in all I'd wholly recommend them, for fans of both Star Wars and animation - the highlight of the series is Mace Windu vs. The Droids - I won't say anymore as I made the clanger of including spoilers in my first ever Ciao review - oops!
The extras are pretty good for a cartoon series with interviews with not only the production crew but with george Lucas himself too. It shows the importance of this series when in the midst of Revenge if the Sith he takes time out to talk about Clone Wars.
Add commentaries, trailers and galleries and you have an array of extras that you'd expect from a Star Wars release but not from this genre of DVD - it's all much appreciated.
I'm pretty sure they did release this before Episode III, but not much longer before. I agree they should have released it maybe a month before but I suppose they were trying to hype the film's release and also hype the release of this DVD with the film. A double-edged lightsaber, one might say... good review.
ries takes place betweenEpisode II, Attack of the ClonesandEpisode III, Revenge of the Sith. If the feature films covers the beginning and end of the war,Clone Warsdepi...
