The thing that surpirsed me and is I think a bit of a cock up on Lucas's part is that Volume 2 isnt out until August 2005. Genndy Tartakovsky who is also the creator of Dexters laboratory the powerpuff girls and the brilliant Samurai Jack, brings us another masterpiece of stylish animation which won him the 2004 Emmy for Outstanding Animated Program.
The style of animation in the Clone Wars cartoons is very similar in style to the Samurai Jack cartoons so if you find that style annoying then you should give this a miss.
Some of the characters look like caricatures, particularly the depiction of Qui-Gon Jinn which is supposed to look like Liam Neeson but looks like the elephant man.

If you didnt get the chance to enjoy this on Cartoon Network then I would advise you to give it a watch before you see Episode III. There's a fair bit of back story relevent to Episode III which can only be found in the Clone Wars cartoon.
The original format on the Cartoon Network was a bit annoying as they only ran for 3 minutes each (excluding opening and ending credits. This did improve for the last series as they ran

As the cartoons were only very short, this DVD only has a runtime of 69 minutes so its not outstanding value for money for just over an hour of animation. This is actually series 1 and series 2 of the cartoon. The third series which will be on volume 2 actually ran for almost 30 minutes each episode so I think is much better value for money. I think what would have been good would be to charge about £15 for a two disc set with all three series on it.
If the feature films covers the beginning and end of the war, then Clone Wars depicts the actual battles and events that made heroes into legends. Don't expect too much character development, as the episodes tend to be driven more by flat-out action than by dialogue (which can be a good thing, considering some Star Wars dialogue). The episode where Mace Windu just about wipes out a droid army single handed is amazing. We see such familiar faces as Obi-Wan Kenobi, Yoda, and Mace Windu in combat, and we meet the elite Arc clone troopers plus new Jedi--the amphibious Kit Fisto and two women, Luminara Unduli and Barriss Offee. We also see a little more development of Anakin--showing off the best pilot skills in the army, defying Obi-Wan, and engaging in a deadly duel with Sith apprentice Asajj Ventress. But just when it's clear that the Separatist droid armies are no match for a Jedi, the tide begins to turn with the introduction of the menacing General Grievous, who plays a crucial part in Episode III. The cast mostly consists of veteran voice actors, but Anthony Daniels does appear as C-3PO.
The news that Lucas is intending to carry on with this cartoon after Episode III is fantastic news and there is also commitment to a 100 episode TV series of Star Wars. According to Rick McCallum and Lucas it will be set between Episode III and Episode IV A new hope.
Basically for all Star Wars fans this is essential viewing, it's just annoying that unless you have Cartoon Network on sattelite or Cable then you will not see the end of the series until it's release in August 2005.
Advantages: Good animation and action sequences, terrific music Disadvantages: So-so extras, lack of plot coherency
Star Wars: Clone Wars is an animated feature designed to bridge the gap between the films Episode II (Attack of the Clones) and Episode III (Revenge of the Sith). It comes in 2 volumes, this obviously being the first. The first volume was originally designed to be a series of 3 minute commercials but ended up being combined to an approximately 1 hour long feature. The animation style is something approaching anime (I know nothing about anime but ... ...and lend significantly to the Star Wars atmosphere. The plot such as it is follows the course of the Jedi Knights, particularly Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skwalker, as the war between the clones (on the side of the Republic) and the droids (on the side of the Separatists) heats up. The story also features the Jedi Council, prominent among whom are Yoda (little green dude) and Windu (token awesome black dude), and on the side of the baddies we have ...

...and thirds episodes of the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy, Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith. There is a lot to enjoy here. I love the animation style used here which is very stylised and full of energy. The series is produced by Genndy Tartakovsky, the creator of Samurai Jack, and the look and design of Clone Wars owes a lot to that series. All the main characters from the Prequels return in animated form along with a few new characters such ... ...a lot more like the Star Wars of old - fun, action and adventure. This may just be that we find the kind of story the Prequels tell more acceptable in animated form. Or, without wanting to get too Star Wars fanboy about it, it could be the fact that it is Tartakovsky not George Lucas who had most control over the series. In any case the series was very successful and spawned a second series of longer episodes and the stories with continue in a Clone ...

...Clone Wars?" Luke Skywalker - Star Wars - A New Hope. This line became perhaps one of the more exciting ones the classic trilogy when George Lucas first announced that he was going to make the prequels. However, fans maybe a little disappointed with the Clones Wars not starting until the very tail end of Attack of the Clones and almost finishing during Revenge of the Sith. This where the Clone Wars animated series comes in.
When Lucas decided that ... ...Wars series is a great Star Wars spin off, hopefully wiping your memory of the awful Holiday Special or Droid and Ewok animated series'. It's a great way of linking Episode 2 and 3, for all those fans who were disappointed with a missing war or an underdeveloped Grievous. Volume 2 is already being made and the first few episodes (which take you right up to minutes before episode 3) are available from the official site. ...

DVD Description
The war which began in the feature film STAR WARS: EPISODE II- ATTACK OF THE CLONES continues in this animated series directed by Genndy Tartakovsky. The separatists and the republic engage in a blowout fight, with Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker, and Yoda defending the republic against the likes of Count Dooku, an alien bounty hunter, and many others. The program features a unique format that consists of many short segments ranging from two to three minutes in length. In each micro-episode, new characters join the ongoing battle of good against evil. This Emmy Award winning series has earned critical acclaim for it's highly original visual style, which features characters rendered in an elongated manner that brings attention to the drawing process.
