What would I have done without Star Trek: The next generation?
Well.... I could have studied and become a doctor, got rich, travelled the world - I could go on but I won't instead I discovered the fantasy world of Star Trek:TNG and it will be with me forever!

Now I am not a complete Trekkie (apologies to those who are) I don't like the orignal series at all - Deep Space 9 was ok, Never got into Voyager and haven't even seen an episode of Voyager. I guess in some respects Star Trek is a generational thing, by that I mean I got into TNG when I was in my teens when it was new so it is MY version of what Star Trek is. My mum says the originals are the best as that was her generation of Star Trek - Am I making any sense? Probably not so I'll leave it at TNG is my idea of Star Trek world.

This box set was given to me as a gift and I treasure it - I don't know what it cost the person who bought but I have had a browse and you can get it Play.com for £299 (eeeeek!) It meant I could finally bin my 40 odd videos that I had every epsiode taped off Sky - some of them were getting unwatchable!

So a brief synopsis of TNG - This version features the USS Enterprise-D and a complete new crew with Captain Jean-Luc Picard, First officer Commander William T Riker, Doctor Beverly Crusher, Engineer Geordie LaForge, Security Officer Tasha Yar, Counsellor Deanna Troi, Worf the Klingon and Data the robot.
The Crew "boldly go...." yeah you've heard all that before so I won't be that predictable. However they do obviously travel the universe and encounter a whole host of new enemies and friends along the way.

There is far too much to say about TNG so I thought I would just reveiw a few of the my highlights of the entire series.

Captain Jean-Luc Picard played by Patrick Stewart is fantastic, a true leader and the relationship that develops between him and Doctor Crusher through the years is a treat to watch - great writing.
My favourite episodes featuring Jean-Luc are Chain of Command when he is taken hostage by the Cardassians and is tortured - this episode wasn't actually shown in some places for obvious reasons - it is one of things Star Trek does well uses fiction in a way that makes you think about some real life situations.

My favourite enemy of all time has to be the Borg - a life form that wants to assimilate all lifeforms. They reappear throught the series of Star Trek and at one point even Picard gets assimilated.....

There are a few things that irritate about TNG - Wesley Crusher - the intelligent teenager that can solve problems no-one else can - is the most annoying person in the Universe and I wish there was far less of him the whole thing! He is one of those charaters that make even me want to turn it off!
The departure of Doctor Crusher for a season led to Doctor Pulaski taking over again - not a good character thankfully - Crusher returned for the rest of the seasons!
You can tell TNG is American - I do not wish to offend any Americans- but there is the whole impression that America is the greatest and they solved the problems of the world blah blah blah but I am just nitpicking here.

Overall TNG has great characters, humour the "Q" episodes are always good for a laugh, sadness - Tasha Yar getting killed off was touching (and a mistake in my opinion) but for me I can watch them over and over again and get lost in a fantasy world for 40 minutes at least!

Spot on on rating. Great television.

Your enjoyment of the show is clear, but I would prefer more about the dvds. Are there extras, tell me mpore about the story, writing series etc. Not bad, just not as good as it might be.
