shows. "Darmok" had the feel of a "classic Trek" episode, dealing with language as metaphor. "The First Duty" challenged Wesley Crusher's loyalties. The season closer "Time's Arrow" (which concluded in year 6) ranks as one of the best TNG cliffhangers, and treats fans to canon-changing story lines and tons of in-jokes. Best of all was the painfully melancholy "The Inner Light," in which Picard experiences an alternate lifetime. There were great guest stars--Paul Winfield ("Darmok"), Ashley Judd ("The Game"), Kelsey Grammar ("Cause and Effect"), Famke Janssen ("The Perfect Mate"), and Jerry Hardin ("Time's Arrow")--and as always there were contributions from Q, Lwaxana, and Barclay, too. After the confidence of the previous two years, however, year 5 often disappointed by not seeing a good idea through to the end. Denise Crosby was swept back under the carpet in the Klingon soap opener ("Redemption, Part II"). No one could make the prospect ofDeep Space Nineattractive enough to Michelle Forbes, so her fantastic performance as Ensign Ro seems wasted in retrospect. And no one could reschedule Robin Williams to guest star, so we had Matt Frewer instead ("A Matter of Time"). Of all stories to use Leonard Nimoy in, "Unification" wallowed in Romulan politics instead of anything emotionally engaging. Gene Roddenberry wanted to introduce a gay character, but mere months after his death all we got was the trite "The Outcast." This was inarguably where the series weakened, without the Great Bird overseeing what was going on. Worst of all, his hard-as-nails bad guys the Borg were given a touchy-feely side in "I, Borg." Fans and critics now appreciatethat the behind-the-scenes focus had shifted fromThe Next Generationto the next spinoff, and it would never fully return.

This was the first season of TNG that I bought, and I got it for about £30 on Ebay, which at the time I thought was a pretty reasonable price. HOWEVER, new versions of all the TNG dvds have just come out, in much sleeker boxes, which you can get for about £17 on amazon/play. You should really go for these sets if you're buying these seasons - much more attractive. All the discs come in their own individual case as opposed to the one big fold out box which the older versions come in, which is highly fiddly and space consuming. The big faux-metal silver box is way too chunky, and when opened, reveals a square box which folds out horizontally, containing the dvds. This box is encased in a silver cardboard sleeve which gets messed up quite quickly. Definitely go for the newer version.
As for the content of the season itself, though, you can't really go wrong. The continued adventures of Captain Picard and the crew of the USS Enterprise take in encounters with their old enemies the Romulans, we get to know the Cardassians, who feature prominently in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and the Bajorans, the race whose planet they occupied and enslaved. There is abundant time travel, new races are encountered, further acquaintance with the Borg, scourge of the galaxy, and so on.
(From hereon I will assume some familiarity with the characters and premise of Star Trek: The Next Generation, as this is not really the place for a comprehensive back-story).
As with the other seasons, it starts with the second episode of a two parter, and ends in the first episode of another two parter. I highly recommend buying season 4 and season 6 as these double episodes are some of the best around. 'Redemption Part II' starts the season off in a tense Romulan/Klingon war situation, and 'Time's Arrow Part I', the crew's foray into 19th century America, finishes it off.
In between there are some absolute *classics*, 'Unification' parts I and II, in which Spock returns - is he a traitor to the Romulans??? Then there is 'Ensign Ro', the first appearance of the eponymous Bajoran ensign and her rebellious ways. Another classic is 'The First Duty', where Wesley Crusher becomes involved in controversy at Starfleet Academy, prompting a memorable speech from Picard: 'The first duty of every Starfleet officer is to the truth!' And who could forget 'Disaster' when, after a 'disaster' on the Enterprise, Troi is left in command, Keiko O'Brien has to give birth with the help of Worf, and Picard is stuck in a lift with three children!
Aside from these near perfect examples of theTNG episode, the general quality of the episodes is unbeatable. In this season TNG has really got into its stride, after the rocky start of seasons 1 and 2 and the developmental phase of 3 and 4. The special features are good too, featuring a tribute to Gene Roddenberry, the original creator of Star Trek, and insights into the making of the season, the visual effects and guest stars, and alien languages.
It's a great season to start with if you dont know much about Star Trek, and if you're not going to collect all of TNG (although you really should) this is a definite must.

Review of Star Trek - The Next Generation - Series 5 - Complete (DVD)
Advantages: Stylish, part of a set, it's Star Trek! Disadvantages: None!
...others.
The case resembles something Star Trek like, futuristic metal in appearance and totally cool!
The Trek Logo is on the sides of the box and the number three on the edge so you can see it immediately when reaching for it on the shelf, below STAR TREK THE NEXT GENERATION down the side in caps.
The case opens from the top to expose a silver box - DVD size - inside a purple inlay with STAR TREK and the logo embossed onto it.
The box is in ... ...probably the best series of Star Trek TNG for me out of all of them. The characters started to flourish, the music to the shows became more powerful as did the story lines and it really became a show for all of the family.
Extra features on this box set include cast interviews, behind the scenes looks and anecdotes from the cast and crew about making the series.
Cost is currently £34.99 from play.com. ...

Advantages: Both parts of Unification are on this disc. Disadvantages: The game which is pretty poor
This is by far the best of the Next Generation series. The common theme of this being Ethics. The brilliant episode Darmok is here as well as Silicon Avator which sees the destruction of the crysatlline entity. We also see the emergance of the Marquis and meet Ensign Ro. Alexander Worfs' son joins the cast and suicide is discussed in Ethcs when Worf is paralysed. Power Play in which Troi and Data and O'Brien are pocessed by spirits is also good.
... ...the legendary Lenard Nimoy in the 2 part episode Unification which is probably one of the best two part episodes.
The writers included Jeri Taylor give a very good insight into this season. It also shows a quite beautiful tribute to Gene Roddenberry which left me in tears.
Also a profile of other guest stars ie Kirsten Dunst in Dark Page. Famke Janssen who started her career in Perfect Mate and Ashley Judd who played Wesleys' girlfriend Robin Lefler. ...
