resolving the breathtaking cliffhanger of "The Best of Both Worlds", the show took pains to show some of what the Federation was fighting for. We meet Picard's brother, Data's father, Tasha's sister and Worf's adoptive human parents, plus an old flame with a surprise son in tow. The Klingon heritage sub-plot that begins here and builds to the cliffhanger finale ("Redemption") would continue to the show's end and through into Worf' reappearance inDeep Space Nine. The year also explored the implications of Data, Lwaxana Troi, Geordi and Dr Crusher being in love, while Miles O'Brien (given a first name at last) married Keiko. There were old friends revisited: the ubiquitous Q in a hilarious Robin Hood romp ("Qpid"), perennial screw-up Reg Barclay ("Nth Degree") and even the mysterious Traveller from Season One's "Where No One Has Gone Before" (played by the actor who was nearly cast as Data). There were new races introduced who would have an important bearing onTrek's destiny: the Cardassians and the Trill. Most of all, though, there were the one-off stories that impressed: "Clues", with its memory-loss mystery; "Night Terrors", with some genuine frights; and "Identity Crisis", with possibly the only timeTrektechnology really helped Geordi solve a puzzle. Then right at the end, reinforcing the year's familial theme, Denise Crosby returned as her own half-Romulan daughter. --Paul Tonks

Advantages: So much cheaper than the larger TNG alternatives Disadvantages: Not the most special features
Season 4 of Star Trek The Next Generation is probably my personal favourite. It has a multitude of classic trek episodes and starts with probably the most famous and tense season resolutions in the Star Trek universe with the second part of "Best Of Both Worlds".
Most of the main cast get their own episodes in this season so the stories are nice and varied. Even though this season is quite a few years old now a lot of the stories told still feel ... ...of slimline boxsets to the Star Trek franchise is definately a good move. I had bought a few of the larger sets and was always annoyed at the price and the fact that they never really fit into my collection. Of course now I do not have this problem so I can finish off buying all of the others.
There are not too many special features however apart from some featurettes. These are nice to watch but I would have also like some commentary tracks to ...

Advantages: Lots of Star Trek Episodes all in the same box! Disadvantages: None!
...I've used the same intro to this as the other reviews from this set of DVDs as it is the same.
The set comes in the stylish silver and purple box that the previous 3 sets came in and looks very swish on the shelf next to the others.
The case resembles something StarTrek like, futuristic metal in appearance and totally cool!
The Trek Logo is on the sides of the box and the number three on the edge so you can see it immediately when reaching for it on the shelf, below STARTREK THE NEXTGENERATION down the side in caps.
The case opens from the top to expose a silver box - DVD size - inside a purple inlay with STARTREK and the logo embossed onto it.
The box is in fact a sleeve when you take it out and inside the sleeve are the DVDs.
These are nicely packaged inside a case holding all 7 disks which fold out to show you all of them...
