"Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Its continuing mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no one has gone before!" Star Trek: The Next Generation ran from 1987 to 1994 and was set in the 24th century (about eighty or so years on from the original sixties Star Trek show with Captain Kirk). The series was conceived during a time when William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy were starting to make what the studio considered to be extravagant demands for their services in the film franchise (which ... more

Advantages Advantages Genre-defining sequel with a lot of potential.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Missed, wasted and blown opportunities.

The first season of most long-running shows will end up looking a little naïve and discordant in hindsight, and the freshman year of Star Trek's first television sequel offends more than most in this regard. The new series would take roughly three years to become fully embraced by fans of the original series, and watching these first twenty-six episodes it's fairly obvious why. Gene Roddenberry's vision of the 24th century is noble and exciting, and sets the scene perfectly for infinite exploration of the human and alien condition, yet this opportunity is somehow wasted almost entirely. Advantages Advantages good start, some solid episodes

Disadvantages Disadvantages rather dated shaky characters

As a big fan of star trek (without being a trekkie) for me this was a must have on DVD. This first season in my opinion did a very good job of making the transition from the old original star trek series starring William Shatner to the new generation. This was no easy challenge considering the enormous popularity of the franchise, and the need to bring it into modern times, and away from the outdated 1960s. There are a lot of very good episodes in this series, especially for me, an episode titled, "11001001", and we are introduced to many of the characters that we will grow to love over the ... more

5 Stars Quick review of Star Trek - The Next Generation - Series 1 - Complete DVD by dscpeasey 26/01/2009
This beginning is a good place to start. Over the 25 shows, Worf is introduced and all the characters developed. Along the way there are plenty of great episodes, like "The Big Goodbye," Data's back-story in "Datalore and " the Klingon rituals of "Heart of Glory," as well as the Romulan encounter in "The Neutral Zone." The DVD supplements (all on the seventh disc) are good enough to make anyone wish for more: four featurettes recall myriad first-season challenges, filled with insider perspective and enough STNG trivia to satisfy all. The packaging on these excellent value DVD is equally good, making ... more
