feature in Paramount's lucrativeTrekfranchise. Die-hard loyalists will appreciate the way thisNext Generationadventure rekindles the spirit of the originalTrekTV series while combining a tolerable dose of New-Age philosophy with a light-hearted plot for the Next Gen cast. This time out, Picard (Patrick Stewart) and his executive crew must transport to a Shangri-la-like planet to see why their android crewmate Data (Brent Spiner) has run amok in a village full of peaceful Ba'ku artisans who--thanks to their planet's "metaphasic radiation"--haven't aged in 309 years. It turns out there's a conspiracy afoot, masterminded by the devious, gruesomely aged Ru'afo (F. Murray Abraham, hamming it up under makeup resembling a cosmetic surgeon's worst nightmare), who's in cahoots with a renegade Starfleet admiral (Anthony Zerbe, in one of his final screen roles). They covet the fountain-of-youth power of the Ba'ku planet, but because their takeover plan violates Starfleet's Prime Directive of non-interference, it's up to Picard and crew to stop the scheme. Along the way, they all benefit from the metaphasic effect, which manifests itself as Worf's puberty (visible as a conspicuous case of Klingon acne), Picard's youthful romance with a Ba'ku woman (the lovely Donna Murphy), the touching though temporary return of Geordi's natural eyesight, and a moment when Troi asks Dr. Crusher if she's noticed that her "boobs are firming up".Some fans scoffed at these humorous asides, but they're what make thisTrekfilm as entertaining as it is slightly disappointing. Without the laughs (including Data's rousing excerpt from Gilbert&Sullivan'sHMS Pinafore), this is a pretty routine entry in the franchise, with no real surprises, a number of plot holes, and the overall appearance of a big-budget TV episode. As costar and director, Jonathan Frakes proves a capable carrier of theStar Trekflame--and it's nice to see women in their 40s portrayed as smart and sexy--but while this is surely an adequateTrekadventure, it doesn't quite rank with the best in the series. --Jeff Shannon

Advantages: Excellent special effects, great cast Disadvantages: It feels like a feature-length TV episode

With the movies starring the original crew I got this - the films came along over a decade after the original series had finished, and special effects had come a long way. After the exciting previous film, FIRST CONTACT, this feels much more sedate. The action proceeds at a much slower pace, and Picard even finds some time for a love interest, Anij (played by Donna Murphy), one of the Ba'ku. Most of the rest of the cast are dealt with as second-tier characters, although Data does get some welcome character development.
Once again special effects are excellent, but the film as a whole feels less than the sum of its parts. When I see a Star Trek movie I want to see something that feels more than just a feature-length episode of the TV shows. With the movies starring the original crew I got this - the films came along over a decade after the original series had finished, and special effects had come a long way. I really felt in watching those films that I was getting something new. The first of the 'Next Generation' films, GENERATIONS, gave me that feeling, with the meeting of Kirk and Picard as Kirk had never appeared in the 'Next Generation' TV series (although Scotty, Spock and McCoy all had). FIRST CONTACT gave me that feeling by being just so... well... good - there was a real sense of danger in that film. INSURRECTION however doesn't give me that feeling. It truly feels like a TV episode that has been put on the big screen. Don't get me wrong, I love the 'Next Gen' TV series, but when I see the movies I want something more.
This film is only really recommended to fans of STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION.
Advantages: entertaining for star trek fans Disadvantages: could have been just a hour episode in the series.
star trek insurrection to put it bluntly was what i thought the worst out of the star trek franchise movies. Im not saying it was a terrible movie....... just that It was the least entertaining of them. now saying that and moving on it did have some original plot movements. the fountain of youth, rouge star fleet officers and so forth but still all the old tricks were still there. revenge, forbiden love and so on. we do get to see some of brent spinners ...

The first of the nine STAR TREK films to feature largely computer-generated special effects and is again directed by Number One, Jonathan Frakes. While on a survey mission, Captain Picard and the crew of the Enterprise stumble on a conspiracy originating high up the Starfleet chain of command that involves a distressing plan of ethnic cleansing. On a remote planet, a small, peaceful race of human-like beings called the Ba'ku seems to be immune to the ravages of ageing. Head bad-guy F. Murray Abraham leads another race for which exposure the planet's radiation is the only cure for an advanced state of degeneration, and, using clandestine Starfleet connections, arranges to wipe out the Ba'ku unless the Enterprise has anything to say about it.
