Deep Space Nine caused some scandal when it first came onto our screens...why you ask? Well in essence Star Trek was always about a star ship, travelling off around the galaxy and having adventures. In this series, the crew are all aboard a space station, which is positioned at the mouth of a worm hole...allowing travel to the other side of the galaxy (the gamma quadrant) in a matter of minutes...cool eh!
Deep Space nine enjoys a strong cast and covers a wide range of issues as is common in the start trek genre, of particular interest in the early seasons is the planet of Bajor and its relationship with the United Federation of Planets after a long occupation from the Cardassians. SHould they join the Federation or go for independence...It is thrilling stuff and almost reminiscent of the struggles that Eastern block countries have had after the fall of communism.
Most Star Trek series run for around seven series and Deep Space Nine manages to stay the distance...it does have a wobble in the middle but the Dominion Wars brought it right back to being brilliant.
One of the best thigs about the Dominion War is the USS Defiant. An amazing ship for Star Trek as it only has one purpose...War. it has a cloaking device, reinforced armour...pulse phasers, quantum torpedoes...it really is the business!
Characters play a central role throughout the series, look out for Dax (a woman with a slug inside her...in laymens terms!) Odo, a shape shifter, Kira the freedom fighter and of course Worf...Kilngon extreme!
If you are going to watch any episodes of DS9 I would suggest that you focus upon season 7. It really is very well crafted with strong characters and cutting edge state of the art special effects. The battle scenes are amazing and it culminates in the fantastic 'what you leave behind' two part end of series finale.
Purists argue that DS9 is the weaker of the franchise, but it is no Star Trek 5! I think it is well written, edgy, with great effects and amazing battle scenes.
Summary: Well worth a look, you too will love the defiant!
