A New Beginning, A New Future…The New Star Trek

Advantages: 127 mins of sheer warp speed adventure. The best Star Trek ever an outstanding movie
Disadvantages: Not enough of it you want more

...day that “People who like Star Trek are nerds!” The ensuing conversation brought up words like geek, weird, odd and resulting in my colleagues announcing that I am on another planet; with a black hole for a brain. It really gets on my goat when a handful of tactless people make those daft sorts of comments.

...A NERD AND… I LIKE STAR TREK” I, like millions of other people. Don’t get me wrong, I am not one of those fans who swat up on the techno-babble or know specific dimensions and details, I don’t dress up as my favourite character. I have never been to a convention although I did go to a wedding once where the bride walked down the aisle to the Next Generation theme tune, the wedding party wore communication badges instead of buttonholes and flowers ... more

...this was going to be Star Trek 90210, and its not. As you would expect from Star Trek the plot revolves around Kirk and Spock. The film begins with the USS Kelvin encountering a space anomaly, they watch as an enormous sized, strange shaped ship appears from the event horizon. The Kelvin comes under attack with the Captain of the Kelvin being invited over to the ship that we now know as the Narada. When Nero the Captain of the renegade Romulans changes ...
...is something that fans of Star Trek have been waiting for as this originally mentioned in Trek II - The Wrath of Khan. Gone are the grey walled corridors of the Enterprise, in fact the Enterprise has never looked so good on a screen. Naturally the ship has been designed to be instantly recognisable as the Enterprise, but everything is different, the engine nacelles are bigger which to me emphasised the power of the ship, the Bridge is still a busy ...

...been J J Abram’s new Star Trek movie, which has been widely regarded as having successfully brought this iconic franchise into a new century and to a new generation. The reviews have been overwhelmingly positive – Ann Hornaday in the Washington Post wrote a prayer of thanks to the ‘Lord of Star Trek’ for a movie that ‘has miraculously resurrected a wheezing but beloved and still relevant franchise’; the Daily Mail salutes ‘the most outstanding prequel ...
...beautiful rebirth’ of Star Trek. The reviewers on Ciao so far give the film a full 5 stars, and the Internet Movie Database (IMDb) gives it 8.4/10 from over 75,000 ratings. Against this tidal wave of enthusiasm stands me. I don’t even have a sidekick to help me. I must alone, heroically save the world from its collective madness. How can this film be viewed as outstanding? Did we watch different versions? ‘Fun’ or ‘entertaining’ I might grant. ‘A ...

=== Star Trek: The film (2009) === I admit I am a massive fan of TV shows rooted in the science-fiction genre so it was no surprise that I was going to see this at the cinema. I honestly was not expecting much after seeing ten previous predecessors' failures to create a successful film that was popular across all the demographics. What I mean is that the Star Trek films within the last 20 years may have only been popular with the older generation; ...

It was obvious that it was one of his big first directive projects and I can honestly say he has excelled himself and has gone much beyond my expectations of this film. ''' ===- What is this film all about? -=== ''' The film was set to be a prequel to the first TV series of Star ...

Star Trek, maybe it should have been left alone

Advantages: Okay if you don't think too hard about it
Disadvantages: Plot holes and poor acting

...I really enjoyed the later Star Trek films, and wasn’t sure a prequel was a good idea. === Synopsis === The story follows James Kirk from the events of his birth and his yearly years, but mainly concentrates on his first voyage on the Starship Enterprise. It also follows the life of Spock and how he was an outcast both on Vulcan and Earth due to his mixed parentage. Spock as we all know also ends up on the Enterprise. The mistake is a lucky escape as the distress call from Vulcan is ...

Star Trek But Not as We Know It - Could it be better!?

Advantages: Up to date, story, excellent acting and special effects.
Disadvantages: None that I can think of.

If like me you are a fan of Star Trek, then you would love this latest film from Director J.J. Abrams, also responsible for television series such as Alias and Lost and feature films such as Mission Impossible III. This film takes us all the way back to the beginning, back to the birth of Captain T. Kirk [Chris Pine] in an escape pod from the USS Kelvin during a ferocious battle in which his father, George Kirk, like all true captains sacrifices his life with his ship ? well how else could James T. enter the world!? The story continues then to piece together the early life of a very rebellious Kirk and how he eventually came to be captain of the USS Enterprise. Whether or not it was the trauma of losing her husband, Jim Kirk?s mother takes to the stars leaving our future captain to his own devices. His rebellious ways leads him into ...

A great Star Trek for everyone!

Advantages: Transparent illuminum
Disadvantages: The dreamy weird bit when they travel through time

option here and what it is trying to help us understand are the long term consequences of our current actions with the environment and nature around us. The film is also special because we have Spock back with us...and it's good to know that he, his wit (without realising it) and friendship with Kirk will last for a long time after this film. I think one of the reasons this film did so well was because it did not focus entirely on space and battles with Klingons, it brought Star Trek down to a level that everyone could watch and enjoy. 'I bet you are from outer space'... 'No, I'm from Iowa...I only work in outer space'. Brilliant! Summary: A great family trek fest ...

Review of Star Trek 4 : The Voyage Home (DVD)

Star Trek 6: rediscovering the basics!

Advantages: Great Entertainment
Disadvantages: Too many shakspearian references

My reviews of the Star Trek movies continue with this brilliant instalment which see's a further change in direction which you can feel to an even greater extent than was apparent in the transition from Star Trek IV to Star Trek V. Clearly having suffered the indignation of a comparatively unsuccessful movie that was Star Trek V, Paramount have decided to "come home" by re-introducing Nicholas Meyer as the director of this Cold War of the future feel Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. Nicholas Meyer Directed Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and a fine job he did too. He's well and truly back and every scene has his name written all over it. The plot of this film relates to the breaking down of barriers between the United Federation of Planets and the Klingon Empire. But its more than that, it's a struggle for survival ...
