and so is the excitement and fun, in this the ninth feature film of the Star Trek series. From the beginning of the Federation, the Prime Directive was clear: No Starfleet expedition may interfere with the natural development of other civilizations. But now Picard is confronted with orders that undermine that decree. If he obeys, 600 peaceful residents of Ba'ku will be forcibly removed from their remarkable world, all for the reportedly greater good of millions who will benefit from Ba'ku's Fountain Of Youth-like powers. If he disobeys, he will risk his Starship, his career and his life. But for Picard there's really only one choice. He must rebel against Starfleet... and lead the insurrection to preserve Paradise.

After a lot of deliberation I finally decided to buy this for hubby, we were unsure about watching it as we are fans of the old series of the TV show and did not think this would have stood up to it. After watching I can honestly say both me and hubby thought it was excellent and really did the original proud.
The film starts with George Kirk being given the Captain role on the USS Kelvin whilst it is out answering a distress call and reports of a lightening storm, but to the ships surprise a massive Romulan ship appears and start firing at them. Kirk has to make the decision to evacuate the ship making sure his pregnant wife is safely off. As Kirk has to stay behind to blow the ship up he manages to contact his wife who has just given birth to a boy who they call James Tiberius Kirk.
We then follow James who has grown up to be a bit of a rebel but also a genius and he faces the task of joining Star Fleet and following in the footsteps of his father. Also at Star Fleet is a young Vulcan called Spock who is also a genius and for some reason the two have a dislike for each other.
When training at Star Fleet all the cadets get tested as a lightening storm and distress signal is heard from the Vulcan planet. Kirk is not allowed to go as he is facing a trail for supposedly cheating on a test Spock created but his loyal doctor friend Bones gets him on board and it is a good job he did as Kirk remembers the stories about the day his father died and how it was claimed to be a lightening storm and distress call which got his ship destroyed and Kirk does managed to alert Captain Pike to this.
What will happen to the USS Enterprise and will Kirk and Spock ever be able to get on and trust each other?
I did not have many expectations for this film, as it has received mixed reviews but I did think that the trailers for it made it look very good, but this is usually the case and the trailers end up showing the best bits of the film., I can honestly say that in this case the trailers only showed a small amount of what turned out to be an excellent film. I was not a fan of the original series of Star Trek, I mush preferred The Next Generation so never really found out how Kirk became the Captain at such a young age and I loved how I was able to find this out from the storyline to this film. I thought that the storyline was very well thought-out and I enjoyed finding out the backgrounds of the main characters.
Chris Pine played the role of James Kirk and I have to say he did a fantastic job. He managed to show the rebel side of the Captain which was always slightly hinted at in the series and I loved how he was a bit of a ladies man and did not care who knew it. I think he managed to show so many different sides to his character and I loved the relationship he had with Spock. Zachery Quinto played the role of iconic Spock in this film and he also did a great job. I think he did look slightly like the original and I loved the pointy ears. I enjoyed how he managed to get his emotions into his character as Spock for me never really showed any in the series shows which I have watched. He came across as a bit arrogant at times but this just showed another side to his otherwise straight character. For me the one let down in the characters department was Uhura as she just seemed a little flaky and more interested in her relationship with Spock. Both me and hubby said that this aspect of the characters and storyline was the only thing wrong with the film as they would never have been like this in the original and there was never any indication that the two characters had once been a couple. I think this took a bit away from their characters.
There were a lot of other actors in this film which included, Eric Bana, Simon Pegg and Karl Urban and I found they all managed to portray great characters and kept them as true to the originals as possible. The one actors which I was really pleased to see in the film was Leonard Nimoy who played the original role of Spock, he did not appear much in the film but was in it towards the end and I think this was a lovely role for him to play although I am not saying what character he took as it may spoil the storyline for those who have not watched the film.
The special effects throughout the film were indeed excellent and fitted very well into the film. They all looked so realistic and well made, a lot of time, effort and money must have been put into these to make them look so good and made for so much better viewing. The music score was also very good and helped with the emotions and tension of the storyline. One thing which I think the effects and scenery let the film down on was the bridge of the Enterprise as it was just so different from the original and looked just too bright.
The DVD which we have does have some bonus features which include:-
-Commentary, JJ Abrahms, Bryan Burk, Alex Kurtzman, Damon Lindelof and Robert Orci -A New Vision Featurettes - Gag Reel
I have not watched any of these as I am not a fan of bonus features so I ma unable to make comment on them.
The running time of the film is 122 minutes which I found to be an excellent length and found the storyline moved at a great pace from start to finish. The certificate is a 12 as it contains moderate violence and threat. I managed to get this DVD for around the £8 mark on Amazon which I felt to be a great price.
Overall I am going to recommend this film not just to fans of the original series but to all who enjoy an action packed film with a great story and great actors. This is definitely one of the best films both me and hubby have seen this year.

Advantages: Another couple of hours with Patrick Stewart and co. Disadvantages: Wees on Gene Roddenberry's grave.
name-check the recurring villain Lore, who was originally found in similar circumstances and subsequently attempted to annihilate the Enterprise crew on several occasions. But then, this film wasn't just made for the fans.
This film is a confusing mess of loyal fan service and Hollywood clichés, and this is probably its biggest failing. It was widely reported that director Stuart Baird was hired specifically to provide a new perspective on the dwindling franchise, and his inexperience with the StarTrek universe really shows. While Nicholas Meyer succeeded in a similar task with StarTrek II, Baird opts for a hugely action-oriented direction, cutting many 'non-essential' character scenes that can be found on the DVD extras, and are among the best written and performed. Even despite all the explosions, photon torpedo battles and random ...

should have been originally including a number of additional scenes added to the film that give it a greater scope and opens up the characters a bit more. I watched this film again the other day for the first time in about two years since I bought the DVD and was happy to see this as a StarTrek film that is unique in the costumes, the surroundings, characters and story. As the films progressed they became more action orientated, which this isn't. This film is not about space battles; it's about self discovery and is true to Gene Roddenbury's vision.
In my opinion it's just a shame that the styles of this film weren't carried over for the remainder of the Kirk, and Spock era as what we get to see on screen is so different to how the other five Kirk films changed and went more to a more military aspect that overused certain alien species in ...
Advantages: Refreshingly different. Disadvantages: Pitiful extra features.
So we reach StarTrek 9 and by all rights you would think that it should be time to call it day. Fortunately Insurrection absolutely oozes originality.
It is a credit to all that the decision was made to take a risk and not go for the easy win action feature.
Complemented by excellent acting from the great ensemble cast, you will laugh and in places even be moved.
It is a slight shame that the extra features amount to a rather pitiful television extended trailer. I'm sure that somebody could have been a little bit more creative. ...

The result is not only by far the best of the 11 Star Trek movies, it must rank as the outstanding prequel of all time... The picture moves at a terrific pace, and is a satisfying tale of good versus evil, with Eric Bana a highly hissable villain... This is space opera on a mythic scale, and it's stirring stuff (Daily Mail, 06/10/2009)
A grand success - perhaps a new populist benchmark in what to do with a flagging franchise, and a witty, light-on-its-feet prequel... May it live long and prosper, by which we mean, sequels, soon, please (Daily Telegraph, 06/10/2009)
Odd-number curse be gone. The most exhilarating Trek to date marks a new future for Kirk and co. If this can boldly go on to seek out ideas to match its speed and style, a franchise is reborn (Empire, 06/10/2009)
The clever and infectious reboot of the amazingly enduring sci-fi classic, director J.J. Abrams crafts an origin myth that avoids any hint of the origin doldrums. That's because he rewires us back into the original Star Trek's primal appeal (Entertainment Weekly, 06/10/2009)
Though it has its over-caffeinated aspects and its missteps, this Star Trek has in general bridged the gap between the old and the new with alacrity and purpose (Los Angeles Times, 06/10/2009)
A testament to television's power as mythmaker, as a source for some of the fundamental stories we tell about ourselves, who we are and where we came from (New York Times, 06/10/2009)
We were also glad to see they didn't ignore the humorous elements that made the original so great. Plus, the casting is spot on (Premiere, 06/10/2009)
A burst of pure filmmaking exhilaration that manages to pay homage to the classic 1960s TV series and still boldly go where no man, William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy included, has gone before (Rolling Stone, 06/10/2009)
Even in comparison with the original series, let alone the Next Generation offshoots, this new Star Trek delivers entertainment of a surprisingly high order (The Independent, 06/10/2009)
Action movie of the year! (The Sun, 06/10/2009)
Abrams' film is a rollicking space adventure that makes you fall in love with the original series all over again (The Times, 06/10/2009)
Deceptively clever: it works both as affectionate fanboy nostalgia and as a neophyte’s introduction to the 'Trek'-verse (Time Out, 06/10/2009)

DVD Description
Those prepared to hate the reboot of STAR TREK--whether they're diehard fans or those in the anti-sci-fi camp--may be convinced to lower their shields after seeing this fun, action-filled film. Best known for creating mythology-driven series like LOST, J.J. Abrams has imbued his version with the elements that have made his shows such mind-bending entertainment while still keeping the soul of the saga intact. STAR TREK begins with an attack by an impossibly advanced Romulan ship captained by the tattooed, snarling Nero (Eric Bana). Among the survivors is the infant version of James T. Kirk (Chris Pine), who grows up to wreak havoc on the Iowa countryside. When Captain Christopher Pike (Bruce Greenwood) meets an adult Kirk, he encourages him to join Starfleet, giving him the opportunity to meet Spock (Zachary Quinto), Uhura (Zoe Saldana), and the rest of the characters audiences have loved for decades. Abrams has assembled a fine cast who seem to be aware of their predecessors but never resort to impressions. Both Quinto and Pine do a fine job with their portrayals of Kirk and Spock, and Karl Urban couldn't be better as Leonard McCoy. The supporting players--Simon Pegg (Scotty), John Cho (Sulu), and Anton Yelchin (Chekov)--all capture the essence of what drove their characters, though their screen time is limited. STAR TREK manages the nearly impossible: it pleases hardcore fans with plenty of in-jokes and references (and an appearance by the original Spock, Leonard Nimoy), but it doesn't alienate newcomers with tons of technobabble. The action and effects rank with any other top-tier summer blockbuster, but there's plenty of humour to balance the excitement. For anyone who (wrongly) felt he had to hide his trekker tendencies, this undeniably cool version of STAR TREK offers a chance to wear the 'geek' label with pride.
