It is very difficult to write an objective opinion about any Star Trek movie. Star Trek is a phenomenon that you either like or dislike. But I will try……
The Plot
Six hundred people live on an idyllic world, and although they are technologically advanced, they do not use their technology and prefer to keep their planet beautiful and untainted. The Federation, a group of civilizations with a common cause for exploration and peace are observing the planet to ascertain whether this planet merits membership in the federation.
The observers also consist of another race who have partnered with the federation to observe this planet. This race has a problem that they are dying as they get old. The planet that they are observing seems to have the ability to prolong life and regenerate the body.
Jean-Luke Picard, the captain of the Enterprise, the flagship of the Federation comes to the planet when he is informed that a crewmember is malfunctioning. Data, his crewmember is an android life form. Suspecting that there are other factors involved as Data is normally an efficient and fully reliable crewmember, Picard starts to investigate.
Realizing that the ‘partners’ have ulterior motives, Picard sets about assisting the indigenous population in a race for survival. With the threat of court-marshal hanging over his head, Picard sticks to his principals and defends the innocent.
The effects
As you would expect with a movie of this caliber, the effects are excellent and believable.Explosions are realistic, the space ships are stunning and some of the smaller ‘craft’ are excellent. The computerized animations are excellent and blend in well with the real life actors. The key to their success is their realism.
The movie
The movie is one of the better Star Trek movies with an exciting and suspenseful plot and some well rounded acting. The cinematography is excellent adding to the general atmosphere. The soundtrack is very good, adding to the suspense and blending in perfectly with the action sequences.
The movie blends action, intrigue and suspense excellently and keeps the audience interested. With several sub plots, and many twists and turns during the plot this is perhaps one of the Star Trek movies that can appeal to a wider audience.
The movie builds on the characters from the series Star Trek: The next generation and adds more humor, and some new romance.
Conclusion
Whether or not you are a movie fan, this movie is very good. Although a general understanding of the Star Trek concept, and a knowledge of the main characters will undoubtedly help with your enjoyment, you do not need to have this knowledge to enjoy the movie. My wife, who does not like Star Trek in general actually enjoyed the movie, and began to relate to some of the main characters. Perhaps there is hope for her yet…..

Ok, I admit I'm a trekkie, but if you look beyond the action and more on the wonderfully story line, a lot if it can be related to current affairs. Thanx for such a great opinion :)
