cast ofStar Trek: The Next Generation: either Captain Kirk and his contemporaries would have to be very, very old, or there would be some time travel involved in the plot. Since geriatric heroes aren't very exciting (despite a welcomed cameo appearance by the agedDr McCoy),Star Trek: Generationsunites Capt. Kirk (William Shatner) and Capt. Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) in a time-jumping race to stop a madman's quest for heavenly contentment. When a mysterious energy coil called the Nexus nearly destroys the newly christened USS Enterprise-B, the just-retired Kirk is lost and presumed dead. But he's actually been happily trapped in the timeless purgatory of the Nexus--an idyllic state of being described by the mystical Guinan (Whoopi Goldberg) as "pure joy". Picard must convince Kirk to leave this artificial comfort zone and confront Dr Soran (Malcolm McDowell), the madman who will threaten billions of lives to be reunited with the addictive pleasure of the Nexus. With subplots involving the android Data's unpredictable "emotion chip" and the spectacular crash-landing of the starship Enterprise, this crossover movie not only satisfiedTrekfans, but it also gave them something they'd never had to confront before: the heroic and truly final death of a belovedStar Trekcharacter. Passing the torch to theNext Generationwith dignity and entertaining adventure, the movie isn't going to please everyone with its somewhat hokey plot, but it still ranks as a worthy big-screen launch for Picard and his stalwart crew. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com

The seventh instalment in the on-going movie series, David Carson's Star Trek: ... more
Generations (1994) is the first film to feature the characters of The Next Generation along with the original cast. This chapter sees Captain Kirk passing the torch over to the newly anointed Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart), who finds himself entangled with a powerful gravimetric force at the end of the galaxy and the enigmatic Dr. Soran (Malcolm McDowell). McCarthy, who scored the 1987 pilot of Star Trek-The Next Generation ("Encounter at Farpoint"), provides the film with an exhilarating combination of symphonic and electronic materials. The score sustains a wide range of textures from inchoate terror to a warm but restrained emotionalism. Moreover, the parallel motion between Carson's images and the music corresponds with an inconspicuous but telling wit reflected by the performances of the Enterprise crew members both past and present. Highlights include the robust "Overture," a moving depiction of "Kirk's Death" and the new-age dreamscapes of "Nexus." The finest moment of the score, however, is the haunting "A Christmas Hug," in which Picard sacrifices eternal joy to save his comrades. McCarthy also makes effective use of Alexander Courage's original television fanfare throughout. As a bonus, the disc features a 15-minute sound effects library compiled from the original soundtrack. All in all, a solid feature film debut by the veteran television composer. --Kevin Mulhall

The film itself is an excellent trek film. It begins by carrying on with the original Trek series crew, sadly not all of them though. Kirk, Scott and Chekov are guests of honour aboard the new Enterprise-B. A what should be routine test run, turns into a daring rescue attempt, as the crew encounters two ships, caught in the Nexus, a mysterious energy ribbon. During the rescue attempt, Kirk is swept out into space. The story continues seven decades later, this time focusing on The Next Generation crew, (all members). Captain Picard and the crew of the now Enterprise-D rescue a scientist who, unbeknownst to the crew, has a deadly plan that includes the destruction of the Enterprise and millions of innocent lives. Picard's only hope for the future now lies within the Nexus, and a little help from a legendary captain.
I won't ruin the plot for you if you haven't seen it, sufficed to say that you won't be disappointed.
You will however be disappointed if you expect there to be extra features. It would not have been difficult to include an audio commentary, cast biographies, or a feature perhaps. I know one was made because Paramount released a promotional trailer with a feature on.
This DVD is really only for die hard fans. If you want to see the film, buy it on video -its cheaper!
Advantages: Some excellent effects Disadvantages: A weak plot
I am a huge Star Trek fan and love to watch The original series, The Next Generation (TNG), Deep Space Nine and Voyager. (And soon Enterprise.).
Many years ago, before I was born, Gene Roddenberry created a series that would become a cult classic and catipult unknown actors such as Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner into stardom. The initial idea was to create a series where a predominately human cast would explore the galaxies meeting ... ...new things:

The aliens are diverse and bring in many different qualities to the whole federation. Star Fleet is the Federations 'airforce'. Thousands of ships are used for defence, attack or exploration. The Enterprise is the flag ship and it and its crew 'Boldlt go where no man has gone before'.

...beginning of the 'Next Generation' Star Trek films and the last appearance of William Shatner as the now rather portly Captain Kirk.
The plot is simple enough and less entertaining than the two subsequent 'TNG' films. Malcolm McDowell is a scientist who believes he can gain immortality by existing inside a cosmic phenomenon that comes around once every eighty years or so (Like a Virgin train running from Manchester, only more punctual). Unfortunately ... ...is a little slow but Star Trek fans could easily forgive that. No, the real albatross around the neck here is the sub-plot involving Data’s Emotion Chip. It is infuriating and simply slows the film down whilst providing little in comic asides. The film would also have worked better had Kirk simply been left to die in the opening chapters.
On the plus side McDowell is a fabulous villain assisted by renegade Klingons. The effects, whilst largely CGI, ...

*The Film
Star Trek Generations is the seventh film in the Star Trek series and is the first to feature the cast of The Next Generation TV series. The film starts on board the Enterprise B, with Kirk, Chekov and Scotty guests of honour at the launch of the new ship. During the launch, they respond to a distress signal and during the mission that rescues passengers from two ships, Kirk is swept out into space.
The scene then switches seventy years ... ...If you are a Star Trek fan, then you'll know whether you want to buy this on DVD. If you aren't a fan, then you probably won't be interested. As sci-fi films go, it's pretty good. At times it's entertaining, light hearted, thought provoking and in general, a good old cosmic caper. It's suitable for all ages (it's rated PG) and is worth considering if you like inoffensive sci-fi films. ...

Advantages: I prefer the "Next Generations" characters Disadvantages: The plot gets lost
Given the opportunism of its concept - Kirk meets Picard, and hands the film franchise over to the next generation - "Generations" turns out to be a surprisingly good film. An extended opening sequence shows Kirk's last journey on the Enterprise, a formal appearance which goes wrong and results in Kirk having to save the bunch of amateurs who are now in charge of ship, and dying as a consequence. However dead people needn't stay dead for long in ... ...hand to help Picard change the course of very recent history. As far as I can tell Kirk is still dead at the end of the film, but they said that about Spock, and I'm sure he'll return if the ratings need a boost. In the meantime the remaining crew are hassled by rogue Klingons, providing an exciting but not terribly relevant interlude.
"Generations" is in my opinion superior "Next Generation" style fare, and anyone who is a fan of both crews will ...

Advantages: Kirk returns. Disadvantages: The Next Gen crew take over
Released in 1994, the seventh film in the franchise was one that film that had to hand the baton to the Next Generation crew and was one that was a formidable task to do from the story point of view, and needed a story that could link the two time periods. The whole idea of StarTrek: Generations is too span the gap of 75 years between the times of Kirk to the crew under command of Captain Picard on the Enterprise D.
The film begins with the christening of Enterprise B under the command of Captain John Harriman, this is going to be the first trip of the new Excelsior Class Starship and three special guests are invited along by Starfleet, these are Captain James T Kirk (Retired), Captain Montgomery Scott, and Commander Pavel Chekhov. With the media present the Kirk graciously accepts the privilege of giving the inaugural command to ...
