The story is a Star Trek spin on the classic whodunnit genre, while still feeling fresh as it is set in space with a more epic nature as peace between two vast interstellar empires is at stake. The Klingons want to make peace with the Federation to end decades of hostility. Unfortunately, there are those out there that do not want this hostility to end and they try to frame Kirk and McCoy for the murder of a Klingon ambassador. I will not give out more than that as it would spoil the movie.
From the opening scene to the bitersweet (but fitting) sail into the sunset at the end, you will be drawn into the story. Very political in nature while very dramatic. You never know where the movie will go next - it progresses very well and leaves you wondering how it will all end...
In addition to the regular Star Trek cast, the movie features two well know actors: Christopher Plummer, David Warner. Christopher Plummer gives a fantastic performance as a Klingon captain who quotes Shakespear. Sex and the City's Kim Cattrall is also in the movie (she even had a naked photo shoot on the bridge of the Enterprise!).
The SFX are very top notch for its day and hold up very well today. The zero-gravity scenes in particular are very memorable.
Cliff Eidelman created the score for this movie (the only Trek movie he worked on) and did a fairly good job. He composed a fantastic theme and much of score has a lot of tension in it, which complements the movie very well, especially at the climax.
My only problem with this movie is how it shows Federation personnel being racist. Gene Roddenberry never would have approved that, but he was not involved in the movie very much (he died before it premiered).
But alas, the closing scenes bring the legacy to a beautiful end and you can't help but watch the actors literally sign off on the franchise to Cliff Eidelman's triumphant theme.
This is the Special Edition DVD, so in addition to the movie you get hours of extra features, which I thoroughtly enjoyed. Nicholas Meyer's commentary is especially interesting. He returned to direct this movie after directing Star Trek The Wrath of Khan 10 years earlier. The movie is a different cut from the original theatrical release and includes some extended scenes that Nicholas wanted to add in retrospect. The video quality is one of the best of all the Trek movie DVD's. The only thing I really felt disappointed over was the lack of deleted scenes or outtakes. But alas you can't have everything...
The Undiscovered Country is one of the best Star Trek movies ever made and a great addition to anyone's collection!
Advantages: An even numbered classic adventure. Disadvantages: Last film of the original crew.
After the total lunacy of the fifth StarTrek film released in 1989, the sixth film in the franchise had to be something different and also had to be something special, given the fact that this would be the last time the crew of the USS Enterprise would be together on-screen.
Released in early 1992 in Europe, the film centres on the Klingons. It has been discovered by the USS Excelsior that he Klingon moon of Praxis has been destroyed by an internal explosion from deep inside the planetoid; this in turn has left the home world of the Klingon Empire with an estimated sustainable life of just 50 years due to the ecological build up of Ozone in the atmosphere. To Captain Kirk's outrage, the decision is taken to hold peace talks, an opportunity that the Federation cannot refuse as this would bring peace across the galaxy. The Enterprise ...
Advantages: Great Entertainment Disadvantages: Too many shakspearian references
My reviews of the StarTrek movies continue with this brilliant instalment which see's a further change in direction which you can feel to an even greater extent than was apparent in the transition from StarTrek IV to StarTrek V.
Clearly having suffered the indignation of a comparatively unsuccessful movie that was StarTrek V, Paramount have decided to "come home" by re-introducing Nicholas Meyer as the director of this Cold War of the future feel StarTrek VI: The UndiscoveredCountry. Nicholas Meyer Directed StarTrek II: The Wrath of Khan and a fine job he did too. He's well and truly back and every scene has his name written all over it.
The plot of this film relates to the breaking down of barriers between the United Federation of Planets and the Klingon Empire. But its more than that, it's a struggle for survival ...
Advantages: Very good storyline and effects. Disadvantages: A few unbelievable characters
StarTrek6 - The UndiscoveredCountry was the last movie to feature the full cast of the original series, and although a few of the members appeared in Generations, this really was a last goodbye to the gallant crew of the enterprise.
Throughout the first five movies we have watched the crew grow older and wiser and yet there is still a little sparkle left in Kirk's eyes as he command his ship, and there is still mischief in McCoy's eyes as he argues with Spock.
One of the moons of the Klingon's home world explodes due to a mining accident; they seek peace with the Federation after it is found that their planet will become uninhabitable after the disaster.
The once mighty Klingons already are fighting a losing battle with the Federations and this last desperate act of peace both surprises many Klingons as well as ...

DVD Description
In STAR TREK VI - THE UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY, the cold war between the Federation and the Klingons thaws out when the leader of the crumbling alien empire makes a peace offering. Admiral Kirk (Willliam Shatner) and the crew are sent to escort the Klingon ruler to treaty talks, but they unknowingly stumble into the middle of a political assassination--and soon Kirk and Dr. McCoy (DeForest Kelley) are framed for the dignitary's murder. Sent off to a frozen prison planet, the two plot their escape while Spock (Leonard Nimoy) and the rest of the crew try to find out who the real killer is. The future of the intergalactic peace movement depends on their success.
