"If I were human, I believe my response would be go to hell, if I were human". (Spock).
The opening sequence to the movie is great, we see Captain Sulu, (George Takei), in his chair on board the USS Excelsior, whilst you hear his log, and drinking a cup of tea there is an explosion on the Klingon moon, Praxis, which is the Klingon's main energy facility.
The explosion is great FX for the time, and very similar to the wave shown as 'Nexus' in the Star Trek movie 'Generations', and in the 'Badlands', featured in Voyagers episode 'The Caretaker'.
Captain Sulu sends a hail offering assistance, but the Klingon high command also sends a message stating the treaty regulations and they do not require assistance.
Star Fleet headquarters holds an emergency meeting on Earth, where the whole of the Enterprise crew are also present with the exception of Spock, (Leonard Nimoy), and Sulu. It's announced that the Klingon Empire only has 50 years left, and the meeting is turned over to Spock, (who enters through the back door). Spock states again that the Klingon's only have 50 years left and he has had many conversations with the Klingon High Council Chancellor 'Gorkon', (David Warner), and subsequently agreed to attempt an end to the 70 years of hostility between them.
Spock informs them that he 'personally has vouched' for Captain Kirk, (William Shatner), to meet and escort Gorkon and his ship back to Earth to discuss the treaty. The meeting ends divided, especially with Spock and Kirk… They retire in just 3 months!
Enterprise soon departs the space dock with the new fresh Vulcan helmsman Lt. Valeris, (Kim Cattral), ordering "Half Thrusters", Kirk then orders, "One-Quarter Impulse"! The Lt. then attempts to lecture Kirk in Star Fleet protocol, the expression from the crew and especially Spock is very amusing and sets a great tone for this movie.
Kirk meets up with Gorkon's ship and invites him and his crew aboard the Enterprise for dinner; this ends up quite a tense affair for Kirk and his crew, but pretty amusing for us (the viewer). This is also the first time we meet-up with General Chang, (Christopher Plummer), in the movie, (you will notice his make-up is far more advanced than the majority of the other Klingon's), he plays a wonderful role throughout the movie as a die hard worrier.
You will also notice at this point, that the new helmsman, Lt. Valeris, isn't your everyday run-of-the-mill Vulcan. The Klingon's leave the ship shortly after the meal, followed by Kirk, going to bed with a headache from Romulan ale. Shortly after this, the Klingon ship is attacked, and two assassins board the ship.
McCoy, (DeForrest Kelly), and Kirk board the Klingon ship to try to help save the Chancellor, but are in vein despite all the efforts and subsequently are quickly arrested by Chang. Spock takes command of the Enterprise and her crew, and tries to piece together what has just transpired.
Whilst Spock is investigating the attack, Kirk and McCoy stand trial in a Klingon Court for the assassination of Gorkon. Even though they are found guilty as charged, the Judge, due to the on-going peace talks reduces the sentence of death to life without parole at the penal colony asteroid 'Rura Penthe '.
Eventually with some help, McCoy and Kirk do escape out of the dilithium mines on Rura Penthe and onto the surface, then out of the transportation shield. Spock sees what's going on and quickly rescues them both.
Spock and Kirk attempt to work out who's who, and what's what, and from that sort out what they need to do. Kirk contacts the USS Excelsior and speaks to Sulu, who in return agrees to help Kirk. They warp to the secret location of the peace talks where the Enterprise, (by herself) enters a huge battle with Chang…
Will the Enterprise defeat Chang? Or will the Excelsior help the Enterprise? Or will both the USS ships be destroyed by Chang? Who is behind it all anyway?
All I will say is that the battle between Kirk and Chang shows some great FX for the year, and is good entertainment. The ending of the movie is what you would call, 'Star Trek Corny', but hey! That's why we love it.
For the real Star Trek fans out there, the ending credits are great; they are a real send off for the fans of the Original Series.
Also look out for the 'cameo' appearances from Christian Slater, Michael Dorn and Kurtwood Smith as the federation President.
The reproduction of this movie to DVD is first rate, the quality of the colours and the picture itself are flawless, and the special effects really do come to life with the Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound

Advantages: Very good storyline and effects. Disadvantages: A few unbelievable characters
Star Trek 6 - The Undiscovered Country was the last movie to feature the full cast of the original series, and although a few of the members appeared in Generations, this really was a last goodbye to the gallant crew of the enterprise.
Throughout the first five movies we have watched the crew grow older and wiser and yet there is still a little sparkle left in Kirk's eyes as he command his ship, and there is still mischief in McCoy's eyes as he ... ...most satisfying movies of the Star Trek series involving the original crew.
This is perhaps my favorite of all the original series movies as it is very convincing. The characters face several difficult tasks, and we see Spock's logic working at its best. As with many of the previous movies there is a comedy element, mostly involving Kirk (e.g. the fight with a huge alien ends when Kirk kicks the alien's knee - little did he know that ...

Advantages: Great Entertainment Disadvantages: Too many shakspearian references
My reviews of the Star Trek movies continue with this brilliant instalment which see's a further change in direction which you can feel to an even greater extent than was apparent in the transition from Star Trek IV to Star Trek V. Clearly having suffered the indignation of a comparatively unsuccessful movie that was Star Trek V, Paramount have decided to "come home" by re-introducing Nicholas Meyer as the director of this Cold War of the future ... ...Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and a fine job he did too. He's well and truly back and every scene has his name written all over it.
The plot of this film relates to the breaking down of barriers between the United Federation of Planets and the Klingon Empire. But its more than that, it's a struggle for survival for the Klingons, a struggle to forgive for Captain James T. Kirk who's son's life was taken by a Klingon in Star Trek III: The Search ...

Advantages: Excellent murder mystery in space Disadvantages: None
A great Murder who donnit! Kim Catterall and Nimoy almost steal the show as Vulcans obviously smitten with each other but following different ideologies. The Klingons need help in this VIth film and it's up to Kirk and crew to escort the Klingon leader to a peace summit. Excellent perforance by Christopher Plummer as the Evil General Chang sees him battling with kirk both mentally and finally in space combat. The story basically revolves around whether ... ...who were the Starfleet assasins, the rescue of Kirk and McCoy from Prison and the unearthing of a closet Rommunlan/Klingon/Terran/Vulcan threat to continue all out conflict at the highest levels - easy isn't it?
The story is a vast improvement on the last film and is a great swansong for all the regular actors as each are given relatively decent lines and appearances. My favorite scene has to be the firing on the declocked lingon vessel by the battle ...

Review of Star Trek 6 : The Undiscovered Country (DVD)
Advantages: It is much better than the fifth film Disadvantages: It is the last in the series to feature the complete original Enterprise crew
The sixth film in the Star Trek saga featured the usual crew of the Enterprise, with guest appearances by a variety of stars and celebrities including Christopher Plummer, Kim Cattrall (long before her 'Sex and the City' days), Christian Slater (in a brief cameo) and Iman.
Relatively recent in relation to the making of the film, the collapse of the Soviet Union had an impact on the storyline of the film. It appears that Paramount threw more money at this film, fittingly as it is a send-off to the original crew (although Kirk, Scotty and Chekov make an appearance in the next film, which introduces the NEXT GENERATION crew to the big screen).
The acting is also superb, and this is surprising again considering the wooden-ness of the acting in the previous film. The only sour note is Kim ...

Advantages: An even numbered classic adventure. Disadvantages: Last film of the original crew.
After the total lunacy of the fifth StarTrek film released in 1989, the sixth film in the franchise had to be something different and also had to be something special, given the fact that this would be the last time the crew of the USS Enterprise would be together on-screen.
Released in early 1992 in Europe, the film centres on the Klingons. It has been discovered by the USS Excelsior that he Klingon moon of Praxis has been destroyed by an internal explosion from deep inside the planetoid; this in turn has left the home world of the Klingon Empire with an estimated sustainable life of just 50 years due to the ecological build up of Ozone in the atmosphere. To Captain Kirk's outrage, the decision is taken to hold peace talks, an opportunity that the Federation cannot refuse as this would bring peace across the galaxy. The Enterprise ...
