After watching Star Trek 4 - Journey Home, and enjoying the quality of effects, the excellent plot and the very good acting I was looking forward to the next installment of Star Trek - 'The Final Frontier'. The initial previews looked good, so I settled into my cramped seat in the Odeon Theater in Cardiff, surrounded by several funny looking aliens and began to munch on my popcorn.
My initial thoughts are good, as I see ... ...so many people to watch Star Trek.
Finally, as the movie began to get moving, and I perhaps saw too many similarities to the first movie, I became a little disillusioned with Star Trek.

Before I start, the title of the movie is perhaps the best part of the film as it reminds me of a fairly funny joke:
'How many ears does Captain Kirk have? Three- left, right and final front ear.'
My initial thoughts are good, as I see camaraderie between three of the main characters. I think it is the continuation of friendships and the believability of the characters, as well as the scientific nature of the movie that draws so many people to watch Star Trek.
Finally, as the movie began to get moving, and I perhaps saw too many similarities to the first movie, I became a little disillusioned with Star Trek.
<The Final Frontier>
While on shore leave with Dr McCoy and Spock, and after singing a round of 'Row Row Row your boat', Kirk is called back to the Enterprise to investigate a disturbance on Nimbus III, which is renowned as a planet of peace. (This initial sequence, and the banter between the three comrades is perhaps the best part of the movie!)
Captain Kirk and the crew are unsuspectingly lured into a trap by Sybok, a renegade half brother of Spock, who has embraced emotions rather than suppressing them; this has led him to be an outcast from Vulcan society.
Although Sybok doesn't intend there to be violence, we see the so called 'peaceful' planet erupting in a seemingly volatile civil war – Kirk and his comrades of course end up in the middle of all this.
Sybok, and his 'gang' - who he has helped to overcome their mental anguish - hope to use the Enterprise to investigate the Great Barrier. This supposedly contains the Galactic Core and Sybok expects to find the ultimate creator - God.
The Final Frontier details the initial struggle for control of the Enterprise and the journey into the Great Barrier. It attempts to deal with many issues including beliefs and mysticism.
In his deluded way Sybok is attempting to do what is right and good, but I somehow doubt that even though he is not using logic that he would allow himself to use his power in the ways in which he does.
<My Opinion>
First of all the plot is perhaps the weakest of the first five movies with the exception of The Motion Picture. The premise that the Galactic Core exists is ludicrous and totally against any known science. The beauty about Star Trek is that it normally follows closely what the Science world believes in.
Secondly, I felt that this movie concentrated a little too much on Spock, trying to highlight the fact that he is half human, and playing on this by introducing much humour and one liners. Devout followers of the original series will note that this new Spock does not rely so much on logic, and perhaps has too many human emotions than previously had been shown.
Finally, after the convincing movie that came before, I was disappointed that this essentially was a step back to a less caring, more 'combat' oriented crew. The plot somehow didn't reflect the growth we had seen in the previous movies and for that reason the movie was instantly poor. Although as a stand alone movie it isn't particularly good or bad, as movie 5 in a series, I would expect it to have been at least as good as movie 4.
Additionally, the effects of the movie were not as good as I have seen in the previous movies, perhaps because of the concentration on action sequences and therefore a lesser concentration in special effects. This was disappointing as I had expected this to be the most spectacular of the movies so far.
The music score was very good, adding an element of suspense to the movie that perhaps wasn't evident from the movie itself.
<Conclusion>
I am a fan of Star Trek and have watched all of the movies; out of the 9 I have seen this is perhaps the second worst. The plot is weak, the acting is OK, and the general production and direction is not up to the high standards I expect from Star Trek.
I am glad to say that the next movie 'Undiscovered Country' improved no end, bringing me back into the Star Trek fold.
I am sure some Trekkies will like this movie, but I would suggest that any non Trekkies miss this one and go directly to Star Trek 6, collecting 200 pounds as you pass go?!
Advantages: An insult to the word advantage Disadvantages: Letting William Shatner loose on an institution
...Out of the ten Star Trek films, where would you rank it?: 10th
You know that feeling you get in your throat when you know you are going to be sick but your body hasn't caught up to your mind yet. That is the feeling I get every time I think about the abomination that is Star Trek V.
In Premiere Magazine's 'Top 20 Films For Summer' of 1989 Star Trek V came in fourth behind Indiana Jones, Batman and Ghostbusters II. When you find out it only managed ... ...the second lowest grossing Star Trek movie (ahead of 'Nemesis' which didn't have a summer release) it slowly dawns on you how bad this film was. And the fault of this can lie only at one mans door; William Shatner himself.
The story, if you can call it that, follows Kirk (recently demoted back to Captain) and crew sent on the new and untried Enterprise-A to find out just what the devil is going on the 'Planet Of Galactic Peace' in the Neutral Zone. ...

Advantages: A brand new Enterprise! Disadvantages: It feels so slow, it lacks the pace of an adventurous Sci-fi film!
...with Kirks every whim! Star Trek five was directed by Leonard Nimoy and is dare I say....the weakest of the Star Trek movie franchise. To be fair to it though, there are so moments of genius. I loved Mr. Spock, Bones and Kirk singing 'Row Row Row your boat' around the camp fire. It is a touching moment, especially when Kirk laments that he has always known that he will die alone...it is like the last supper for three dear colleagues...who have become ... ...one was burnt up in Star Trek 3). It was originally the USS Yorktown, but was renamed in honour of Kirk and his crew who had just saved Earth...again (see Star Trek 4)! The scenes with the rocket boots are also really well done and a lot of fun. The film is about the search for God and features many of the fine original cast. it also, features Spocks brother...a Vulcan who has enbraced his 'humanity'. the film has all of the elements that we have ...

Advantages: Comic moments Disadvantages: Short on story line
The fifth and possibly weakest of all Trek films, the Fianl Frontier has a great idea. Reunite Spock with his emotional, half-brother who thinks he can lead his followers on to find God - cool! Anyway, budget problems and Shanters over reliance on comedy means this films fails - especially when the fan dance by Uhura is watched. She's a great charcater - but would a platoon of guards really be that captivated? Also - why is the Enterprise th only ... ...Kirk is at the heart of the Federation with in theory hundres of ships close by yet The Planet of Galactic Peace borders the Klingon and Rommulan Empires - a huge distance away and hopefully patrolled by at least one experienced Captain! Anyway, Kirk & Co. go boldly forth, have the Enterprise hijacked and the crew brainwashed (except good old Scotty who makes a true comic moment in rescuing Kirk, Spock and McCoy - excellent!)

Advantages: Good music Disadvantages: story, special effects and acting
Star trek 5 the final frontier was one of the strangest star trek films to date. It doesn't even have good special effects and the acting is not as good as previous performances. The only good thing about this film is the music done by Jerry Goldsmith.
The story starts with Kirk, Spock and Mccoy camping. But shore leave is soon cancelled and the incomplete USS Enterprise leaves space dock on course for Nimbus 3. A hostage situation has taken place, ... ...film very well.
Overall, star trek 5 the final frontier is a do not buy. It has rubbish special effects, a stupid story and laid back acting. It really is not a good film and not a good star trek film at that. I do not recommend this film. ...

Advantages: New Enterprise, original cast. Disadvantages: Script is awful, not enough budget.
With the brand new Enterprise-A being introduced to us at the end of the previous film, it was inevitable that the crew of Starship Enterprise would have the chance for more big screen adventures to be released, the ending of Trek IV effectively opened the door. With StarTrek V - The FinalFrontier we have a complete mish mash of a story and complete and utter mess in continuity and a complete injustice to fans.
The film begins with Kirk, Spock and McCoy on a camping trip, unknown to them a renegade Vulcan has taken hostages on the plant Numbus III. The planet being unique as it is the only place in the universe that Klingon, Human and Romulan live together. The Enterprise is sent, the problem being that the Enterprise is not fully operational as transporters don't work; instead shuttlecrafts are used as means of transportation ...

William Shatner, circa 1988:
"I'm fed up. StarTrek was meant to be MY series, MINE. I was the star. First billed. I was the one who was meant to get all of the girls and who the series was meant to be based around. But instead that SOB Leonard Nimoy got too much credit. Just for sticking on some pointy ears and pretending to have no emotions. When the show finished he got straight onto a starring role on Mission Impossible, and I got to do hardly anything and even had to live out of my car for awhile. I was meant to be the star. I was meant to be the one who'd get work as a lead on another show straight away, but no, Nimoy gets it. I have to wait until the 80s to get another successful TV show, TJ Hooker. And that was rubbish.
"OK, so finally we get to make a film in the late 1970s. It was meant to be a new TV show and Nimoy wasn ...

the opportunity to make an extended cut for this dvd but was denied the privelige given to Robert Wise in StarTrek - The Motion Picture Directors Edition. Who knows what kind of movie it would have made. As always the StarTrek discs are provided with plentiful extras and are varied enough to hold the interest of the most jaded fan.
Here is a quick run down of the dvd.
Picture
It is presented in its original aspect ratio of 2:35 and is anamoprhic widescreen, It is a good quality transfer but does look a little dull compared to newer sci fi movies.

English and German Dolby 5.1 Again good without being outstanding.
Extras
Audio commentary by William Shatner and his daughter Liz Shatner who wrote a book on StarTrek V. This is very entertaining but there are sometimes long gaps between talking.

DVD Description
Stardate 8454.1: In the windswept desert of Nimbus III, the Planet of Galactic Peace, a lone settler witnesses a man materialising out of the dusty horizon, offering to share and bear the settler's pain. With a laugh, the two join forces and plan to steal a starship. Cutting to the rock and scrub of another desert, the jeans-clad Captain Kirk is climbing bare-handed in Yosemite. After a near-accident followed by a night of beans and whisky and campfire songs, Kirk (William Shatner), Spock (Leonard Nimoy), and McCoy (DeForest Kelley) are called back from shore leave to the new Enterprise for an emergency mission. Counting on Scotty (James Doohan) to bring the new ship up to speed, they travel to Paradise City on Nimbus III, where delegates from the Romulan, Klingon, and Human races have been kidnapped. The crew soon find themselves joining kidnapper Sybok (Laurence Luckenbill), the Vulcan renegade half-brother of Spock who is desperate to discover the secret that lies beyond the Great Barrier at the center of the galaxy. A thought-provoking directorial debut from William Shatner; the journey becomes a metaphysical quest for the meaning of life, as the crew of the Starship Enterprise comes face-to-face with "God."
