St Elmo's Fire hit the big screen in 1985 and was directed by Joel Schumacher , whose other films include The Lost Boys, Flatliners, Phone Booth and a couple of Batman films.

St Elmo's Fire is a real "coming of age" film. A gang of friends have all just left college, Georgetown, USA and this film shows them living life in the real world and growing up. Some deal with it better than others. It is a typical "brat pack" film of the 80's starring the young stars of the day, Demi Moore, Andrew McCarthy, Rob Lowe.

St Elmo's Fire is one of my favourite films. It has several stories all intermingling as the gang get on with life after school.

CAST & CHARACTERS
++++++++++++++++++
Alec Newbary (Judd Nelson) is living with Leslie Hunger (Ally Sheedy) Alec has great political aspirations and wants Leslie to be a model wife while he screws anything that moves. Leslie has other ideas.

Kevin Dolenz (Andrew McCarthy) is madly in love with Leslie, but the others think that Kevin is gay because he shows no interest in girls. Kevin knows all about Alec's infidelity and wants to tell Leslie.

Kirby Keger (Emilio Estevez) is a law-student who is madly in love with a doctor , Dale Biberman (Andie McDowell). This love is unrequited.

Jules (Demi Moore) is on a downward spiral, her life and her debts are out of control. Seeing a married man doesn't help matters either. She turns to her friend Billy for help, but he is too much of a mess himself to help anybody. She is hiding a serious cocaine problem from her friends and on the edge of a total breakdown.

Billy Hicks (Rob Lowe) is a college hero, all the young dudes want to be him and he can't grow up and leave school behind. Father of a child, his long-suffering wife has had enough of him. Billy refuses to grow up and is permanently drunk and can't hold down a job to pay the rent. Wendy has a huge crush on Billy.

Wendy Beamish (Mare Winningham) is a straight laced girl who is trying to go against her parents. She has a crap job is social services and is rebelling against marrying a dork called Howie. She is inexperienced sexually and dresses like a nun. She has no need to work, but insists on it so that she feels useful.

The gang all hang out at a bar called St Elmo's, which is the college hangout bar. The film shows the gangs breakups and affairs and how they all interact with each other. Billy realises that he has to grow up, Wendy stands up to her parents, Jules deals with her various issues. Eventually the gang realise that school really is over and that it's time to find a new place to hang out.

This film caused some anger in America due to its stereotyping of characters, ie, portraying Wendy's Jewish parents and wealthy and trying to arrange her marriage to a nice boy. It starred the young actors of the day, some of whom went on to be very famous, such as Demi Moore and Rob Lowe.

What I like about the film is that it deals with a period of life that a lot of people find difficult to deal with, that period of growing up, realising that you have to find a job and earn some money and start to pay your way in life. The gang realises that they may not be together forever after all.

This is one of my favourite films of the time, along with About Last Night, which also starred Rob Lowe and Demi Moore.

SOME USELESS TRIVIA FOR YOU
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++

St Elmo's Fire - Bluish, flamelike electrical discharge that sometimes occurs above ships' masts and other pointed objects or about aircraft in stormy weather. Although of high voltage, it is of low current and therefore harmless. St Elmo (or St Erasmus) is the patron saint of sailors.

St. Elmo's Fire is an electro-luminescent corona discharge caused by the ionization of the air during thunderstorms inside of a strong electric field. Although referred to as "fire", St. Elmo's Fire is in fact a low density, relatively low temperature plasma caused by massive atmospheric electrical potential differences which exceed the dielectric breakdown value of air at around 3 megavolts per meter. St. Elmo's Fire is named after Erasmus of Formiae (also called St. Elmo), the patron saint of sailors (who sometimes held its appearance to be auspicious).

(This information was taken from Wikepedia)

St Elmo's Fire (Man In Motion) was a hit for John Parr, written and sung by him, it went to number 1 all over the world.

www.youtube.com - enter st elmo's fire into the search box and you can watch and listen to the video to the theme tune.

The "Booga Boooga" chant was allegedly not part of the original script, but the actors put it in themselves and it was kept in order to show the closeness of the characters.

My DVD does not have any special features on it, apart from a couple of trailers.

This film can be purchased from Amazon for around £3.99.
