'Spy Kids' is everything you'd expect from Robert Rodriguez, director of 'The Faculty', 'From Dusk Till Dawn' and his two versions of 'El Mariachi'. But this time its for the kids. Gone are the huge explosions, passionate love scenes and spraying blood, and replaced with two kids and some rather splendid special effects.
The plot, briefly, is that the world's best secret agents - played by Antonio Banderas and Carla Gugino - have been captured on their latest mission, and its up to their two childern to save them.
That pretty much sums up the entire film. This hap-hazard rescue mission is frantic, bizarre, and rather twisted, reminding me quite strongly of Tim Burton's 'Nightmare Before Christmas' in places. Its topped to the brim with Bond-style gadgetry, with even Teri Hatcher playing a Bond-bad girl.
However, the film is diffinitely for kids. The performances from the two children weren't half bad, the effects were really very impressive, but the plot is full of lovey-dovey sentimentalism and good morals. Feel free to throw your young children at it, but adults should give it a miss and stay in the bar.
I think the closing lines sum it up, and this from one of the kids:
"We're going to keep this family together, and that's the hardest mission of all." *cute smiles all round*
Yuck.

Advantages: Suitable for everyone, but unusually enjoyable. Take your kids and actually enjoy it yourself too. Disadvantages: A little saccahrin in places, but rises above this at the end/
