When being interviewed by Johnny Vaughan for his movie The Faculty, Robert Rodriguez was asked what his next film would be. He replied it would be a kids movie. Vaughan said "will it have action in it?" to which Robert replied " Naturally".
Well two years on and we've got Spy Kids. the film has gone down a storm in the USA and it's easy to see why.
The story is this. Two former spys (Antonio Banderas and Carla Guigno) fall in love and settle down and now have two kids-girl Carmen and the younger boy Juni. Some of the worlds best secret agents are going missing and it's up to the parents to come out of retirement and get to the bottom of it. Problem is they get captured. the man responsible is one Fegan Floop (Alan Cumming), a willy wonka type man who has a kids tv show that Juni happens to adore. It turns out that a billionare Mr Lisp (Robert Patrick) has hired Floop to build a world dominating army of kiddy robots and the only person who knows how to make them work is the kids dad. It's left up to the kids to save the day with the help of some very cool gadgets.
The film is 90 minutes of sheer fun. Floop is a wonderful character who has more interst in making his tv show a hit than world domination. In fact he's not really the true villain of the film. He is joined by some insanely colurful characters who look like the tweenies on acid and happen to be the lost secret agents underneath. The henchman are called Thumb-Thumbs and are all fingers and thumbs-literally. There's just so much imagination.
As for the kids well they're great. They aren't annoying and have a good sibling rivalry and you really root for them. The gadgets they have are all cool and range from electro-static bubble gum to watches with built in satellite dishes.
It has a load of wall to wall action, great jokes, it looks good and the main thing is that I as a 22 year old loved it as did my 11 year old brother. So if you want to keep the kids quiet over Easter take them to see this, there's no violence, swearing and an excellent time will be had by all.

I really like the look of this film, can a nearly 30 year get away with watching it at the cinema? I think I'll have to rent it when it comes out on video!! ~Andy

Good opinion but I doubt that I'll bother going to see it. And I still think Rodriguez is a sell-out!

Good review - it covered all major points and didnt spoil the plot. I was avoiding this film because the kids in these types of movies are usually annoying - I might change my mind now though!
Advantages: Suitable for everyone, but unusually enjoyable. Take your kids and actually enjoy it yourself too. Disadvantages: A little saccahrin in places, but rises above this at the end/
