Brad Pitt, pretty-boy box-office icons from two different generations. But its tense musical score embodies a gratifying sense of cross-cultural experimentation that seems as doggedly genre-expanding as it does dramatically tough. Young composer Harry Gregson-Williams (Shrek, The Replacement Killers, Antz, The Rock) employs haunting Eastern instrumental modalities, symphonic flourishes and spare choral touches here but crucially weds them to driving, polyrhythmic percussion and pulsing techno club grooves. Continuing a contemporary scoring trend that largely eschews thematic melodies in favour of evocative atmospherics, the composer's studio-savvy fusion has conjured up a soundscape of surprisingly emotional twists and turns, but one that also seems to grow more determinedly electro-modern with each successive cut. This is that rare score that proves that pop trend can indeed inform classical tradition--and much to the benefit of both.--Jerry McCulley

It’s not often that a film starring Brad Pitt would make me leave the house and head for the Cinema, it’s a little less likely that I’d end up buying the DVD. But when a film starring both Robert Redford and Brad Pitt is advertised I normally wouldn’t bother with it. However for some unknown reason I actually did go and see this and I’m happy to say I wasn’t disappointed.
Now this caught my eye from the trailers but to summarise it, we start in Hong Kong in 1991 and a Red Cross team has arrived to administer a Cholera vaccine to the inmates of a prison. Within this Red Cross team are two CIA agents who are trying to get one of the inmates out. Agent Tom Bishop (Brad Pitt) electrocutes him self with the other members of the party announcing him dead and leaving him in a back room, but with the power out from his little accident he manages to find and liberate the mysterious prisoner before returning to the medical room to play dead again.
However unlike James Bond, this plan hadn’t gone off without a hitch and they are caught after a prison officer spots something unusual, resulting in them all being imprisoned. We then appear in Langley, the home of the CIA where Nathan Muir (Robert Redford) is coming to the end of a long career within the organisation when he hears that one of his former agents has been captured in New York. And Muir has to postpone his retirement to find out what happened to his former student.
The CIA set up their own special appointed task force to find out what happened and why they had agents working without proper authorisation to save an unknown target. They call for Muir to find out a bit of back ground information on the agent and discover a lot about his past, however as Muir begins to work out who the target was he sets about hatching a plan to free Bishop as the CIA are happy to wash there hands of him, but as Muir feels responsible (I’m not telling you why) he feels he should try to help Bishop.
Now Spy Game isn’t just an action film, it also requires a lot of thought, and a bit like Rules Of Engagement it does involve a lot of scene’s where they are talking things over but I feel this makes for a better film. It works well, having Muir looking back over events and going through Bishop’s training. The film also deals with a lot of global politics, and the involvement of the CIA in all that has gone on and although based on it isn’t a true story you cant help but feel parts of it have been drawn from real events. The script has a few unexpected twists and turns which helps keep you interested in the film, instead of losing your interest part of the way through.
The director, Tony Scott comes from quite a hit filled back ground, having directed Top Gun and Days Of Thunder. And like many of his other films, this one flows well, keeping you entertained but not dragging on too much. The special effects where used are superb and don’t go over the top, which shows especially during the scene in Israel when Muir has just arrived and they run through a war zone. The scene is clever and really has to be seen to see the point I’m trying to make about it, but the direction works well throughout, with the attention to small detail really showing.
Of course the main characters in the film or the stars if you will are Pitt and Redford, everyone else apart from the target really are just there to help the story along. Although most of Pitts screen time is from events in the past he is impressive and taking on a persona he has in many other films and in this one it really works well. The action roles seem to suit him well and although he doesn’t have the same screen time as Redford he does make the most of it.
As for Redford, he has made a few dodgy films in the past but as the well respected Muir he shines. Narrating for big parts of it this role seems to suit him, especially when he is plotting on his own, which makes the film a lot more enjoyable. Although he has made a few dodgy films, like Pitt he seems well suited for his role in this film, which impressed me. And finally we have the target played by Catherine McCormack, she is only in the film for a short time but her character Elizabeth Hadley is very important to the story, so it helps to have an actress playing her with a bit of screen presence.
So unlike the last film, Deep Blue Sea, which was ideal for anyone who didn’t want to think, this comes in at the opposite end of the scale, where you will need to be concentrating for chunks to make sure you understand what is going on. Obviously it wont appeal to everyone, but it is a well made film with the right casting choices, so definitely one I would recommend.
Advantages: Well made, stylish movie Disadvantages: Unsatifying climax
...of the Tom Bishop.
Spy Game was a strange film, and I’m still not convinced that it was terribly successful. It is a film comprised of a number of different mini-stories within the main plot that are shown via flashbacks – intended to explain how and why something happened. Each of these sections flows well into the next, as the backdrop of the CIA task force interviewing Nathan Muir is used very effectively to keep the film fluid. Nonetheless, ... ...was no real adversary in Spy Game for Muir’s cunning. The things that Muir actually did were also rather far-fetched – could anybody really forge a signature like that – and with such convenient tools provided? This is not a film where one should start to examine things too closely – you will be disappointed if you do.
One of this film’s greatest strength is that of its characters, which are examined in some detail ...

Advantages: Redford and Pitt, action sequences Disadvantages: rather lame love story, too long
Okay, I was like many, intrigued to know how the two most famous blond, blue-eyed heroes of American cinema would act together on the big screen, so I went along to see this film, out last week. What i saw was good, fun entertainment, nothing particularly surprising but plenty to keep me interested. The plot involved Brad Pitt getting bunged in prison and sentenced to death out East, and Robert Redford, the old mentor, finding out he has twenty four ... ...rest of the film shows Redford reminiscing to the big wigs about their longlasting connections and how he got to know him, in order to try to obtain their sympathy and support to get him freed. What with all the flashbacks one rather expects the pace to become slow and even tedious, so it is a pleasant surprise to find the director keeps the pace up to scratch, with plenty of action sequences and fast photography as he shows the war scenes, interspersed ...

Advantages: Redford at his best Disadvantages: Bit slow in places
The spy thriller is back, if you liked the Bourne Identity and The Day of the Jackal then you should enjoy this.
Plot
A foiled CIA plot to extract a political prisoner from a chinese prison goes wrong with their operative (Brad Pitt) being caught, with 24 hours before his execution the chiefs in langley have to decide what course of action they will take, and whether they will disown him as a rogue agent to protect themselves from embaressment ... ...is a sleek, well produced spy thriller with a twist, the acting of pitt and redford lives up to the usual high standards of these two fine actors.
I think it is fair to say that it was only a matter of time until these very similiar actors would share the screen together.
This is not just popcorn fun but a stylish thriller which leaves you wanting more - it really does make the recruit (pacino et al) pale in comparison. ...

Advantages: Strong cast; good plot; what will happen now element Disadvantages: Can't think of any at the mo'
I'll not go into the plot here as the other two opinions have covered it perfectly :-)
I'm also not going to go on about Brad Pitt's good looks although that is an obvious bonus to the film if you're a fan of his ;-)
Here is my humble opinion: -
After reading local paper reviews etc I wasn't really expecting much from this film but I was extremely surprised that it had received such criticism. The papers had slated it's "lack of tension" and the ... ...was at stake, but I personally don't feel that this detracted from the films impact.
All cast gave an excellent all round performance - the plot involved lot's of variety in emotion and I think the impact was carried. I'd say go and watch this film to anyone as there's something for all. Plenty of action, emotion and scenery.
Look out for the clever ending!! Always 2 steps ahead!! ...

Advantages: You don't always have to wear 3-D glasses. Disadvantages: The Acting. It's Not 3-D.
Spy Kids 3-D
Plot.
At the start of the movie, Juni Cortez (Daryl Sabara) the trilogy's junior James Bond comes out of retirement (Although we have no explanation why he retired in the first place), to rescue the mind of his sister Carmen Cortez (Alexa Vega), who has become trapped inside a virtual reality video game.
Sylvester Stallone, stars as the main villain, "The Toymaker", who designed the video game to capture the minds of every child on the planet, (Once again we have no idea why.)
Once Juni get's inside the game, it's a world of computer scenery, special effects and made up creatures. He meets a bunch of beta testers who have been allowed into the game, and sets out on his quest to reach level 4, where is sister is being held.
My Opinion.
First of all, becuase this is a 3-D movie and you have ...
Advantages: They let us take the 3D glasses off for a while Disadvantages: There wasn't really a story
to the ground!
Firstly we are introduced to our 3D glasses.... and told that we didn't have to wear them all the time, just when the characters on the screen have theirs on.... oooo goodie I thought!
Then the film starts....
Basically the Spy Kids (a brother and sister) have stopped spying... but the sister is missing! She is trapped in a game! Yes, a new video game that is about to hit the streets and take over every kid in world! An evil genius (Sly Stallone) has found a way to trap every child in the game and has to be stopped!
The spy brother of said spy sister is called to spy headquarters to find his sister and stop the evil genius by going in the game... this is wear the 3D glasses come in... once inside the game we all wear our glasses!
He is helped by the beta testers (more kids that were testing out the game ...
Advantages: 3D Effects (At Times) Disadvantages: Weak Story, Only Good On Large Screen
I was a huge fan of the first two Spy Kids movies. The second one did see a slight deep but then there's only so much you can do in a sequel.
The 3rd and final film (I Hope) starts where number two left off. Juni Cortez has quit being a secret agent and has decide to set up his own dective agency. Soon there is news of Juni's sister, Carmen. She is trapped in a brand new computer game called "Game Over", which is due to launch in less then 24 hours.
The game created by the toy maker (Sylverster Stallone) has the power to turn children mindless and become in his control from their very own homes. Carmen was sent into the game but went missing.
It's up to Juni and the help of some new friends to go into the game and stop the toy maker once and for all. But the toy maker has other ideas and will do whatever he can to stop them ...

DVD Description
Robert Redford stars as veteran CIA agent Nathan Muir in this thriller from Tony Scott (TOP GUN, ENEMY OF THE STATE). Set in 1991, Muir expects his last day before retirement to be an easy one. Instead, he finds that his protege, Tom Bishop (Brad Pitt), is being held on espionage charges in a Chinese prison will be executed in 24 hours. A seasoned agent, Muir has played spy games for a long time and quickly realizes that the CIA may not be acting in Bishop's best interest. Even as an agency committee is grilling Muir, he is secretly working to secure his former charge's freedom. Action-packed flashbacks establish the relationship between the two men: their first meeting during the Vietnam War, Muir's recruitment of Bishop following the war, Bishop's training and early missions in Berlin, and an important operation in Beirut. Similarly, the flashbacks trace the evolution of Bishop from an eager, brand-new agent in 1975 to a disillusioned veteran in the mid-1980s who is at odds with his mentor, Muir. This last layer of conflict adds extra suspense to SPY GAME, as Muir must decide whether to help his old friend or take the easy way out.
