Spooks was first shown by the BBC in 2002, it deals with a group of MI5 agents and several different scenarios that they face.
Spooks is one of the most original and innoative programmes that has been shown by the BBC in years, it is also satisfying to know that we in Britain can make something as good as the Americans.
Based within the MI5 the gang have to deal with "the war on terror" making the programme very topical. During the first season they are involved in situations involving the IRA, a right wing party, anti capitalists groups and also corrupt politicians.
The main characters are:
Tom Quinn (Matthew Mcfadyen) leads a small team of agents responsible for the missions carried out. Tom is conflicted with issues in his personal life, having met a new girlfriend with a small child he is forced to live a lie. Unable to tell her his real name and what he does for a living (She thinks he is a computer programmer called Matthew).
Zoe Reynolds (Keely Hawes) a young but able agent who works for Tom. Zoe is a rising star within MI5 and is trusted by Tom for getting a job done.
Danny Hunter (David Oyelowo) recently recruited to work for Tom and is desperate to prove himself (a little too eager). Danny is a little care free and finds himself facing finacial difficulties, however he is still a promising agent.
Helen Flynn (Lisa Faulkener) a lowly junior, who wants to get more involved within the MI5.
Tessa Phillips (Jenny Agutter) has worked for the agency for over 20 years and heads her own section. Tessa is a role model for Zoe, however she is also a person who is willing to scheme her way to the top.
However it is Harry Pearce (Peter Firth) who is the overall Head of Counter Terrorism. Harry is a man who is willing to make tough decisions, Harry was recruited having served with the British army in Ireland.
There are some great supporting roles, especially Hugh Laurie who plays Jools Siviter, Head of MI6. Hugh Laurie shows an early glimpse of how he can act serious roles and it is no surprise that he made it big with "House".
Anthony Head also makes a good appearance as a Rogue Agent, who returns to the fold.
whilst the programme is a little over the top the way in which the show manages to use real situations makes it more realistic. The programme highlights some of the uncomfortble questions which arise when dealing with life and death situations.
The action in each of the episodes will have you hooked almost instantly, this programme is guaranteed to entertain and thrill you. There are several twists and turns throughout the season and the last episode will have you on the edge of your seat (this episode is one of my best programmes of all time)
In my opinion this programme should not be missed and I guarantee that after watching this you will want to join the MI5!
