Spongebob Squarepants - Nautical Nonsense/Sponge Buddies (DVD)

As SpongeBob Squarepants is becoming a big favourite in our house I decided to treat my boys to this DVD and I have to say he is actually growing on me as well, I can now watch it without wanting to pull my hair out!

As SpongeBob Squarepants is becoming a big favourite in our house I decided to treat my boys to this DVD and I have to say he is actually growing on me as well, I can now watch it without wanting to pull my hair out!

The DVD is called Nautical Nonsense and Sponge Buddies and it contains 10 episodes. The episodes are all old ones which have previously been shown on the children’s channel Nickelodeon which was a bit of a disappointment for me but my boys still love it especially now they can watch it when ever they wish. The episodes are:-

1. Ripped Pants - In this episode SpongeBob is trying to impress Sandy the Squirrel on the beach and he accidentally rips his pants which causes the whole beach to fall about laughing, as SpongeBob thinks he is onto something with this he spends his time going around ripping his pants for everyone. Will the ripped pants remain funny or will everyone soon grow tired of it and who can SpongeBob become funny and popular again?

2. SB-129 - As SpongeBob and Patrick are annoying Squidward he tries to hide out in the Krusty Krab but things go wrong for him as he gets frozen in the freezer and is finally found way in the future and he does not like this so he is now trying to make his way back home but can he actually travel back in time and will he like what he sees from the future?

3. Texas - Sandy the Squirrel is getting homesick for Texas and she decides that the only way she will be happy again is by going back to Texas where she came from but SpongeBob and Patrick decided that they will miss her too much as they set about trying to cheer her up and make her stay in Bikini Bottom, will they succeed or will Sandy finally leave to go home to Texas?

4. The Graveyard Shift - Mr Krab finds that he will make more money if he leaves the Krusty Krab open 24 hours which means that SpongeBob and Squidward are having to work at night which sees SpongeBob getting over excited so Squidward decides to try and scare him. Things start to get spooky for them both when the story Squidward made up looks like it is going to come true. Will the boys be safe working at night and was Squidwards story actually true?

5. Something Smells - SpongeBob is celebrating his Sunday morning by making his favourite ice cream but after eating it his has the most awful onion breath and as he sets off to do his job for the day, saying hello to everyone in Bikini Bottom, people are running from him, will Patrick be able to help him find out why people are running away from him and what will make his breath fresh again?

6. Jelly fishing - Poor Squidward had had a nasty bike accident so he is at home recovering from it when SpongeBob and Patrick decide they will cheer him up by giving him his best day ever. They decided to take him jelly fishing but things don’t work out as they have planned them. Will Squidward be able to recover from his accident or will SpongeBob and Patrick accidentally make him worse?

7. Dying For Pie - Squidward decides that it would be funny to let SpongeBob eat and exploding pie but when SpongeBob is told that he only has hours left to live from the pie Squidward starts to feel guilty and decides he must make SpongeBob’s last few hours as fun for him as possibly. Squidward is starting to feel miserable spending his time with SpongeBob but will he make his last few hours fun and happy and will the pie actually explode?

8. Wormy - Sandy is needing to take a trip so she leaves SpongeBob and Patrick in charge of her pet caterpillar. Overnight the caterpillar changes into a butterfly and SpongeBob and Patrick think this monster has eaten Wormy so they set about telling the whole of Bikini Bottom about this terrible monster which sees the whole town fleeing in panic. Will Sandy be able to restore order in Bikini Bottom and actually explain what the monster is?

9. F.U.N - SpongeBob has decided that Plankton is only so evil as he is lonely and has never really had any fun so he decides that he is going to become his friend and cheer him up to see if he will change his ways. Everyone can see that Plankton is using SpongeBob to get the recipe for the secret crabby patty recipe but cannot convince SpongeBob of this. Will SpongeBob be able to change Plankton or will his plan succeed and will he get the recipe?

10. Club SpongeBob - Both SpongeBob and Patrick have started a club which sees them both being stuck in the small tree house but as Squidward tries to get in after being warned not to they are completely stuck inside and as he tries to get out the tree house is catapulted into the middle of nowhere. Will Squidward be able to make SpongeBob and Patrick see that sitting still is not going to get them found and rescued or will Squidward be proved wrong and SpongeBob and Patrick’s plan is actually the better one?

The episodes do run on from each other on the DVD but you can actually select a particular one if you only want to watch one or two at a time. I have to say that I was relieved when the theme tune was not played at the start of each episode as it really does get annoying after hearing it so often!

The animation in each of the episodes is actually very good and a lot of time and effort has been put into the making of each episode. The characters which feature are all very good and likable and they are all found in each of the episodes, which I find does bring a lot of familiarity for children as they enjoy seeing their favourites popping back into different episodes. I like how the other characters are in fact given their own storylines instead of the stories just being about SpongeBob which I find does bring a bit of depth to the whole story and series.

The voices which the characters have been given are all very good and do suit their characters. I do find that SpongeBob’s voice does get a little annoying at times and I just really want to pull my hair out when he laughs as he does have the most annoying laugh I have ever heard but for some reason my boys find this very funny. My boys have all taken a big liking to SpongeBob and his friends recently and love watching the series. The stories in each of the episodes are very good and easy for them to follow and understand. I did think that the episode called The Graveyard Shift may be a little too scary for them but they didn’t even bother and loved it.

A lot of the things which happen in the show are so out of place and completely unbelievable but I think that as this is a cartoon then they can just get away with it. I do have to laugh when the characters are having baths or flooding their houses with water as they are already underwater so this would have no effect on them but maybe it is just me that finds this strange?

I have asked my boys if they would like to have a look at this material but they just have no interest for it and much prefer spending their time watching the episodes instead so I cannot comment on the features as we have not yet watched them.

The overall running time of this DVD is 108 minutes and it has a certificate of Universal which I have to agree with. I managed to get this DVD brand new from EBay for just under £5 which I felt to be a great price. I am going to recommend this DVD as my boys love it and I am finding I am warming to it myself and I can now see why it appeals to so may adults as there is a lot of mild adult humour in each episode.
