Director: Jan De Bont Producers: Mark Gordon and Ian Bryce Writers: Graham Yost Stars: Keanu Reaves, Sandra Bullock, Jeff Daniels, Dennis Hopper and Joe Morton.
Released in 1994 this movie used a Greyhound bus full of passengers to create a truly entertaining, if predictable, story
**BRIEF PLOT**
Jack Traven, (played by Keanu Reaves) and Harry Temple, (played by Jeff Daniels) are working as SWAT explosive expert for the Los Angeles police department.
An old enemy, Howard Payne, (played by Dennis Hopper), whom the pair thought dead, re-emerges to take revenge on Jack for ruining one of his plans.
Howard explosively gets Jack attention and then tells him about his new plan, involving a Greyhound bus, some innocent passengers and a bomb which will explode if the bus drops below a certain speed…..
Jack locates the bus but things go wrong for the driver, leaving a helpless passenger, Anne Porter, (played by Sandra Bullock) to drive the bus for what seems like an eternity.
Howard treats this as a game between himself and Jack, laying down some rules, laughing as he does so. With the help of Jacks Lieutenant, Mac, (played by Joe Morton) the streets of the city must be cleared for the bus to proceed, without hindrance.
But it seems that the more the police seem to take control of the situation the more problems occur, creating more twist and turns all round.
The hunt is on for the bus and a way to stop the mad bomber from triggering the device… whilst trying to work out who the bomber is and what he wants…
**IN CONCLUSION**
A great film with some good stunts (and one unbelievable jump???).
Keanu Reaves plays his role well as the budding hero, vainly trying his best to keep the bus from exploding, his cool attitude in a crises adding to the thrill.
Sandra Bullock is the heroin of the moment, playing the part well considering she is simply sat behind a steering wheel for the majority of the movie, playing the damsel in distress expertly.
The movie is pretty action packed, more or less right from the beginning, with explosions, chases and gunfights.
Then, with a bit of a twist towards the end of the movie it changes pace slightly as more explosions are imminent.
As I said earlier, there are one or two stunts which I found a little too far fetched, both involved the abilities of the bus (and if it wasn't for CGI one certain stunt, involving a leap over a large gap in the road, this would not have been used), but in all they did add extra thrill to the movie.
Would I recommend watching this???? Yes I certainly would.
In all, a great movie with enough action to keep the audience wondering what lies around the corner. The story is well written and the action is good.
It is well acted by all, especially Dennis Hopper who plays his role as the mad bomber to perfection, almost as if he was a real life mad man with a knowledge of explosives.
