Speed was a pretty decetn action film with a good premise that was well executed. naturally the formula cleaned up at the box office and a sequel was put into motion. Keanu Reeves passed on the idea and quite wisely yet Sandra Bullock reuruned and has only just started to recover from the debacle.
Speed 2 isn't just an average film, it's a terrible one with a badly concieved idea. The first film takes place on a bus with traffic all around, Los Angeles traffic at that creating mayhem and chaos as the bus could create disaster on many levels. Here they set the film on a cruiser ship which isn't known for it's breakneck speeds and massive traffic problems. Jan De Bont tries to create a some action out of the whole mess but can't get past the hack-eyed script and bad acting. Jason Patric shows up as Sandra's boyfriend and he can't really contend with the bad material. Even Willem Dafoe comes across as terrible with a motive so dumb and oh he has something illness that requies him to have bloodsucking leeches.
They really should have burned the negative on this film and it deserves every bit of bad press it gets as it wastes a lot of moeny on something that sucked on paper in the first place.
The dvd itself has a 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer that is quite solid but suffers from some soft points and digital smearinf in places. It could have been better considering the film isn't that old.
The sound mix is Dolby Digital 5.1 and is the discs only highlight with a very engrossing mix that makes godd use of rear speakers whenever the action kicks in.
Extras wise we get a trailer that shows all the best bits so just watch that over the film. Don't expect any special edition of this film because it tanked at the box office and it widely loathed but quite a lot of people.
Thankfully I won my copy which I've duly got rid of. Speed 2 will waste 2 hours of your life and if you fork out for the dvd you'll feel shafted in a very nasty way.
