I recently made a visit to a Virgin Megastore outlet, and found a very good four DVD's for twenty pounds offer. So when I saw this film amongst all the titles on offer it just had to be mine. I haven't seen this film since I was knee high to a grasshopper, and might I say remember just how funny I found it then. Well I must say I found it just as funny, if not funnier even though I am taller than the grasshopper now. So on with the review. Ooh and I think I may have killed the grasshopper whilst cutting the lawn the other week...Sorry!

The evil Helmet (Rick Moranis) who by the way is meant to be Darth Vader, lead by his evil president Skroob. Well their planet called Spaceballs is running out of air, so they decide they will steal the air from another planet. In this case the planet involved is Druidia, which I think is supposed to be a sort of Earth type planet.
Then we meet Princess Vespa (Daphne Zuniga) who is the daughter of King Roland (Dick Van Patten) She is about to marry a prince she doesn't love in the slightest, but he is the only prince supposedly left in the galaxy. So being a princess she has to marry a prince, who says money buys you choices!! But just as she gets to the altar she turns and bolts, followed closely by her robot maid (Voice by Joan Rivers) Who I think is supposed to be a piss take of C3PO of Star Wars (get the spoofy jist now?)
She is so determined to get away she jumps in her fathers Mercades convertable spacecar and flees the planet. She is soon under attack from the Spaceballs lead by the evil Helmet, as they need to abduct her and hold her to ransome so they may obtain the planet Druidias air supply.
King Roland finds out what is going on and he turns for help to the only people within her space vacinity. Lone Starr (Bill Pullman) Who I suppose is meant to be a Luke Skywalker type character. He has his trusty friend in tow Barf (John Candy) He is half man and half dog (and his own best friend!!!) So they jam the radar (by firing a big jar of raspberry jam at the Spaceballs ships radar...LOL..) They rescue her and her robot Dot Matrix and flee from the enemy ship, but only to run out of gas/petrol and have to crash land on a desert planet.
Things soon get sticky as the blazing sun beams down on them and they just can't carry on any longer. As they lay dying in this desert planet enviroment, suddenly along come the Dinks. Just imagine a Telletubbie crossed with and Ewok and you are sort of there in a Dwarfish kind of way. But the best bit for me is the name of their leader whom once the intrepid voyagers are saved they are taken to meet.
Enter the Dink leader, and the wisest wiseass in the whole galaxy, the great and powerful Yogurt ( Voice by Mel Brooks) He proceeds to tell Lone Starr of the power that he posseses inside him, a bit like the force on Star Wars. But this is even better this is "The Schwartz" He teaches Lone Starr to harvest the power of The Schwartz, which he posseses within himself. But the evil Helmet is hot on their heels and he needs to learn very fast, well as far as I could tell he was taugh it in a few hours (Now that was quick, a bit like a crash course you might say)
But the evil Helmet manages to capture the princess by using the Schwartz (which by the way is only a Crackerjack box ring) Then they take her prisoner aboard Spaceball one, which is their mothership and set a course for Druidia. he then uses dirty plastic surgery torture techniques on the princess to make King Roland give them the planets access codes. He has no choice but to give it up ( which by the way was 12345) and allow them to get the planets air supply. Suddenly Spaceball one starts to change like a giant transformer into "MEGAMAID" Which is basicly a giant maid holding a giant vacum to suck out all the air and transport it back to planet Spaceball.
Can Lone Starr use the Schwartz to save the princess and the planet that she hails from? Will his trusty sidekick Barf take on the giant megamaid and stop the evil Helmet in his tracks. Well you will just have to watch it and find out, remember this film has more twists and turns that the Mississippi River (except for the straight bits) But I am sure you have worked out the answer to that by now, so you have ruined it for yourself. No don't worry you haven't, you see there are so many sidesplitting funny moments in this film the ending doesn't matter a bit.
This film is so funny, with so many sci-fi film references and piss takes that that you will be wetting yourself laughing. I have decided that this film has to be one of my favourites in the whole world or possibly galaxy, and I am glad I now own my very own copy of it. So what are you waiting for get out there and find yourself one NOW!!!!!!!!!!!
And remember................................
MAY THE SCHWARTZ BE WITH YOU..........

Advantages: A brilliant film, funny to watch no matter when Disadvantages: The Princess
Well Having got Justin Trousersnake out of the way, its time to get back onto another movie, and to follow on from Mars Attacks, I saw no better way than to watch Mel Brooks masterpiece!!! (Ok maybe not) Spaceballs. Mel Brooks is famous for his spoofs, with films such as Blazing Saddles and Robin Hood Men In Tights under his belt, however my favourite of his movies has to be this one.
As I said it is a spoof, and the main film's taken off during ... ...The Apes. The planet Spaceball is running out of fresh air and President Skroob (Mel Brooks) has decided drastic action must be taken to get fresh air for the people. He dispatches Dark Helmet (Rick Moranis), in Spaceball 1 to steal all the air from Planet Druidia.
Meanwhile on Planet Druidia, Princess Vespa (Daphne Zuniga) is getting married to Prince Valium, the last prince in the universe. However she is not happy about this and along with her ...

...a spectacularly bad miss. However, Spaceballs the movie is a shining example of a spectaculrly good hit, and is by far his finest movie since Blazing Saddles. Spaceballs is yet another in the long catalogue of spoof movies which dear old Mel has churned out for us. This one is however also totally hilarious from start to finish. It spoofs all those hugely popular sci-fi movie around the time of its creation such as Star Wars, Alien and the rest and ... ...like this: The Spaceballs live on a planet with a rather nasty polluted atmosphere. They crave good air to survive and see this on the planet Druidia. Meanwhile the king of Druidia is trying to marry off his daughter princess Vespa to prince Vallium in order to improve a trading relationship. This all goes wrong because the Spaceballs, led by the evil Colonel Sandurz (George Wyner), President Skroob(Mel Brooks) and Lord Dark Helmet (Rick Moranis) ...

This Mel Brook’s film is a brilliant spoof of sci-fi, in particular Star Wars. I have always liked Mel Brooks sense of humour and if Naked Gun is your thing, then you’ll love this. The story is based around an unlikely Han Solo style character who has to battle the evil Lord Helmet, brilliantly played by Rick Moranis. As with most of his films, Brook’s appears as a Yoda style character and you have other great characters such as Pizza the Hut and ...

Advantages: Some funny gags Disadvantages: Mostly predictable
...all these you can add Spaceballs which boldly goes into the science fiction genre and provides laughs at warp factor 5.
Brooks himself cannot resist the opportunity to appear in the film with a typical dastardly plan to steal the air/water/life from another planet called Druidia. The film pulls heavily on the Star Wars films and ridicules it mercifully and yet at the same time affectionately. Thus Darth Vader becomes Dark Helmet an obvious cue for ... ...as much a physical opposite to Vader as is possible. Instaed of being imbued with powers given by The Force they achieve strength through The Schwartz. I am not sure what The Schwartz is exactly, a spice, the colour black?
Bill Pullman plays Lone Starr as the antithesis of Luke Skywalker. The boyish enthusiasm for the fight against evil replaced by a lazy space slob. John Candy appears as his dog Barf. There is a story of sorts involving the thwarting ...

...ruler of the Spaceballs. The Spaceballs planet is running out of air, and their ransom for the return of Vespa is all the air on Druidia. Lone Starr is faced with a tough challenge in rescuing Vespa from Skroob's henchman Dark Helmet.
The Cast and Performances
Bill Paxton is our hero Lone Starr, inept space rogue flying around in a big van with Barf, a Mog (half man half dog), played here by John Candy. Mel Brooks pops up in a couple of cameos ... ...Darth Vader but with an overly large helmet! Daphne Zuniga plays Vespa, the princess in distress, and Joan Rivers lend her vocal talents to the robot maid Dot Matrix. All performances are very good, b ut everything is far too surreal to suggest excellent performances. Everyone does well.
My Opinion
This is a very well made film, with comedy coming every minute, but it is actually quite a beluevable and enjoyable plot as much as everything else. ...

Advantages: Very funny, excellent characters Disadvantages: Bad effects but they do add to the humour
desired as they were awful at times but I can forgive this as it did add to the humour of the film. The sets and scenery were at times bad but again this added to the humour. I did find the music to be very good and found it very funny when the Jaws theme was used every time we saw Dark helmet?s ship. There was a whole variety of music in the film and it was all appropriate for the places which it was used. The costumes were also very good and could quite clearly see that they had all been based on what the Star Wars characters wore in the original films.
The DVD which we have is the ?Spoof Edition? which just means that it is the Special 2 Disk edition. The film is on the first disk and the second disk in packed full of bonus material which includes:-
Audio Commentary with Mel Brooks
Audio Commentary with the Dinks
Dink Subtitles ...
Advantages: Funny, not to serious, cheap Disadvantages: No repeat function on my DVD player
Well what can i say about this film? Probably the greatest Mel Brooks comedy available. Its about Lone Star, a lonely spaceman traveling the universe looking for his path in life along with his best mate Barff, a Mog (half Man half Dog). One day they get a call from the King of Planet Druidia, his daughter has been kidnapped by the dreaded Spaceballs race in an attempt to steal all of the air from Druidia. So Captain Lonestar and Barff are thrust into a adventure to try and save the princess and her Droid from certain death.... of embarassment by having her old nose put back on her face! When they do escape the must outrun the Spaceballs for fear of capture, this is when they run into Yogurt, an age old master of Swarz...... Will they succeed? Will they get caught? Who is Lonestar.... find out by watching this amazing film.

Advantages: 2 Discs Filled with extras and commentaries! Disadvantages: The Dinks commentary gets old quickly.
Mel Brook's classic Spaceballs is now on 2 discs and I made sure that I got this on the release date! I'm not going to go into the movie as I can see the 1 disc edition has many many reviews already.
Disc one features commentary from Mel Brooks, and a seperate one from the Dinks (Plus a subtitle feature).
I've not heard the Mel Brooks one in full yet but the bits I have heard have almost been funnier than the movie. Plus he has plenty of stories about filming on set as well.
As for the Dinks commentary & subtitles, it was a funny idea and not to be taken too seriously. But I can see it getting boring very quickly to hear the entire movie with constant "Dink dink dink dink" all the way through it.
Disc 2 contains several documentaries. My favourite is the Spaceballs documentary, I'm not sure when it was filmed but it ...

DVD Description
In this spoof of STAR WARS and a handful of other sci-fi flicks from the 1970s and '80s, space-bum-for-hire Lone Starr (Bill Pullman) and his half-dog/half-man sidekick, Barf (John Candy), must rescue a spoiled Druish princess (Daphne Zuniga) from the evil Lord Dark Helmet (Rick Moranis) in time to pay off intergalatic gangster Pizza the Hut. With SPACEBALLS, director Mel Brooks is at it again, this time with a science-fiction parody with all the blue-screen special effects and weird makeup (though in this film, things are always slightly off-kilter and unpolished). Here, maverick space travelers set out to save the planet Druidia, which is being harassed by the Spaceballs, a sinister group attempting to pilfer Druidia's air resources. Among the many gags and jokes is a hilarious parody of a classic scene from ALIEN. Brooks himself (who appears in two different roles) makes one of his funniest acting appearances as Yogurt, a send-up of THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK's Yoda.
