What can I say - Space Cowboys!! The not so big hit of 2000 starring Clint Eastwood (who also directed and produced the film), Tommy Lee Jones, Donald Sutherland and James Garner (yes he is still alive!!).
The film starts by showing our four heroes as young (yep in the 50s) pilots and engineers working on the supersonic/space testing program for the American airforce. Suddenly withdrawn from the program because of NASA deciding to send a monkey into space they all go their separate ways.
Forty years on our not so young heroes are asked to help out with an ailing Russian communications satellite. By using blackmail they manage to convince the world that they are the only ones able to fix the satellite and must therefore be allowed to finally fulfil their dream of going into space (why they couldn't just pay $14 million like everyone else I don't know!!!).
After somehow getting through astronaut training they are shot into space only to find ... well that would spoil it wouldn't it!! Let's just say things aren't as easy as they first thought.
The film seems unable to be able to make its mind up as to whether its a comedy or whether its an action film. Whilst there are humourous moments in the film its not exactly a laugh a minute. And to be quite honest watching Donald Sutherland's character flirt with anything in a skirt is quite painful (thank goodness Scotland doesn't have a space program!!).
However there are some poignant moments in the film and it is well acted as you wold expect from four such big stars. At just over 2 hours long though it does tend to drag - probably something for a wet Sunday afternoon.
