SPACE 1999 ==========
Here we are again with another memorable sci-fi series from Gerry and Sylvia Anderson whose other 'Hits' included Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons, Fireball XL5, Thunderbirds and UFO.
Space 1999 was set on the Moon where a Moon base has been built and nuclear waste from the Earth was stored, but things are not well and soon the nuclear waste explodes blowing the moon out of earths orbit and sets it on a course out of the solar system. The series then follows the crew left alive the Alpha moon base as the travel around the universe and as they meet many strange aliens and come across other civilizations and weird planets. The program aired from 1975 - 1977 and actually only lasted for 2 series but with 24 episodes in each series it seemed to go on for a lot longer. The crew consisted of some well known faces and made house hold name of some originally unknown actors.
Chief cast; ======== Martin Landau as Commander John Koenig, leader of Moon base Alpha. Barbara Bain as Doctor Helena Russell, head of Medical Section. Barry Morse as Professor Victor Bergman, chief science adviser Nick Tate as Alan Carter, third in command, chief pilot of the 'Eagles'. Catherine Schell as Maya, the new science officer.
Series 1; ======= Episodes 1. Breakaway 2. Matter Of Life And Death 3. Black Sun 4. Ring Around The Moon 5. Earthbound 6. Another Time, Another Place 7. Missing Link 8. Guardian Of Piri 9. Force Of Life 10. Alpha Child 11. The Last Sunset 12. Voyager's Return 13. Collision Course 14. Death's Other Dominion 15. The Full Circle 16. End Of Eternity 17. War Games 18. The Last Enemy 19. The Troubled Spirit 20. Space Brain 21. The Infernal Machine 22. Mission Of The Darians 23. Dragon's Domain 24. The Testament Of Arkadia
I remember as a kid having a toy ‘Eagle’ and really enjoying each episode. You can get it on DVD or catch the repeats on ITV4, daily. At the time the sets where clever and innovative and the scripts fresh and different. The special effects where not up to much but then it was 1975, oops sorry, 1999. The acting was ok and the introduction of Maya as a shape changer added new ideas and possibilities to the adventures each week. As with Star Trek the main crew never died, except for Victor, see below, and so you could easily see who was going to die and it was usually the new face sitting next to a main cast member. Worth a watch even if only for the nostalgia.
Supplementary Info; =============== A little known fact is that 'Victor' who was the chief science officer in the first series was replaced by 'Maya', a shape shifter, in the 2nd series. Victor was wrangling over his wages and in the end was simply dropped from the series. He was only referred to in one sentence in the new series, 'The only spacesuit with a problem and Victor had to be in it'.
