Once again we head on down to South Park, Colorado for another dvd volume of episodes that feature lunacy that can only come from a cartoon environment. Volume 11 of the series features 4 episodes from the third series.
THE RED BADGE OF GAYNESS ------------------------- It's time for the annual re-enactment of the Civil War in South Park. The boys have a bet on who will win even though it's a forgone conclusion. Although no one told Cartman this and soon things are taken one-step further as Cartman leads an army on a conquest of America fuelled by a lot of alcohol.
This is one of those episodes that just highlights the complete stupidity of the series and shows why Cartman is one of the best characters purely because he is brainless.
MR HANKEYS CHRISTMAS CLASSICS ------------------------------- Mr Hankey celebrates Christmas by introducing a selection of festive songs from the residents of South Park.
This is one of those novelty episodes and as a result is one of the weakest in the entire run of episodes. There are not a lot of laughs as there is no coherent storyline. The only highlight is Mr Garrison's expletive ridden up-tempo song.
ARE YOU THERE GOD? IT'S ME JESUS ---------------------------------- Jesus is under pressure to come up with something spectacular for the dawn of the millennium on New Years Eve. In desperation he turns to his father for help. Meanwhile the boys discover puberty but with the wrong impression. This leads to hormone pills and other insanity.
This is an amusing episode that has some gross stuff in it. The boys think they are having periods and Stan voice starts to change and he grows facial hair as he takes hormone pills to catch up. There's also a very funny appearance from Rod Stewart and an alternative take on what God looks like.
THE BROWN NOISE ---------------- The boys take part in the biggest ever recorder concert as 4 million school kids converge on Arkansas for the concert. Apparently if a certain pitch is reached on the recorder then it induces mass evacuation in the trouser area. Meanwhile Mr Garrison confronts his father with an issue from the past.
This is one of those episodes that really gets close to the knuckle with a subject that isn't really funny but you can't help but be amused. It's more down to Mr Garrison's sexual confusion.
As usual the episodes are all presented in 1.33:1 (4:3) and as usual the transfer is fairly standard with the rough look of the show not really cause for pristine dvd transfer. Generally the quality is good with bold colour, it's far better than the VHS anyway.
The sound as well just takes on a fairly bog standard stereo mix with no frills which aren't expected anyway.
As for extras well there aren't any at all. The majority of the south park dvd releases are pretty bare bones so you can't really complain although it would be nice to see the documentary that got included with some of the VHS releases.
The major hang up is the price, £19.99 is a pretty high price for a featureless dvd that only runs for 90 minutes. My advice is to turn to the Region 4 releases that are exactly the same and nearly half the price.

Volume 11...? I thought that they'd canned South Park ages ago. Good opinion.
