Somewhere in Time is the powerful story of a love that transcends time and space written by one of the Grand Masters of modern fantasy. Matheson's classic novel tells the moving romantic story of a modern man whose love for a woman he has never met draws him back in time to a luxury hotel in San Diego in 1896 where he finds his soul mate in the form of a celebrated actress of the previous century. Somewhere in Time won the World Fantasy Award for Best Novel and the 1979 movie version starring Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour remains a cult classic whose fans continue to hold yearly conventions to this day.

THIS MOVIE FEATURES IN MY CIAO LIST OF THE 10 BEST MOVIES ABOUT TIME TRAVEL
Forget about the over-acting, uninspired screenplay and non-existent special effects, suspend all reasonable disbelief and let yourself get carried away by the most effective combination of science fiction and romance of all time.
For some people Somewhere In Time will seem like a cheap screen equivalent of a slushy Mills and Boon novel. Christopher Reeve writes in his first autobiography "Still Me" that the film was very poorly received by the critics on its initial release, and it's true that if you approach the film wanting to find fault with it you will have an absolute field day. But if you are in a sentimental mood or have a soft side, then you should definitely track it down.
Christopher Reeve stars as an up-and-coming American playwright called Richard Collier. The film opens with Collier being congratulated by lots of people on the success of one of his plays after its opening night. Suddenly a very old woman approaches him through the crowd and gives him an old watch and says "Come back to me". Stunned and confused by this turn of events, Collier finds out that the woman is called Elise McKenna and that she had been a famous actress some sixty years previously. When he tries to track her down he finds out that she has passed away.
Collier becomes obsessed with Elise McKenna, and is convinced that he is destined to go back in time and meet her as a young woman. When he sees his own signature in a hotel register from 1912, from a date that McKenna was performing at the hotel's adjacent theatre he realises he must have been there.
What follows is a love story with a bit of time travel thrown in for good measure. But however ridiculous it sounds, somehow it works spectacularly. A fine central performance from the serially under-rated Christopher Reeve helps the viewer suspend disbelief, and the chemistry between him and Jane Seymour will melt the hardest of hearts. They look absolutely perfect with each other. The movie features quite possibly THE most romantic kiss in the history of cinema, and if Reeve and Seymour were not in love in real life then they both deserve Oscars.
Although Christopher Plummer is on auto-pilot as Ms McKenna's jealous manager, his presence lends the film a certain gravitas that adds to the overall sweeping epic feel.
A special mention must also go to John Barry whose soundtrack for this film is a masterpiece. It is a measure of his genius that the main theme from Somewhere In Time is even more memorable and moving than the Rachmaninov classic that also features in the film. I know of no other film that is so enhanced by the music.
It's something we used to watch all the time in our family when we were kids so maybe for that reason alone my rating is a bit biased. But since then I have discussed this film with a few other people who have seen it, and there is an instant kinship that develops between fellow devotees.
It's a special film with a unique atmosphere and although for some it will be a guilty pleasure I am not ashamed to say that it's up there in my personal top ten of all time. ______________________________________________
DVD EXTRAS:
Fans of the film will be overjoyed by the bonus material which includes some stills from the movie and a fascinating insight into the making of the film. The whole surviving cast is interviewed over 20 years after it was made, including the late and truly great Christopher Reeve who gives an especially poignant retrospective. Among the most interesting anecdotes is one from Jane Seymour (still unbelievably beautiful after all these years) who reveals that she persuaded her friend John Barry to waive his prohibitively high fees and compose the music for the film. Director Jeannot Szwarc tells the story of the budget cuts that almost prevented the movie from seeing the light of day; Richard Matheson, the author of the novel Bid Time Return on which the screenplay is based, talks with great affection with his involvement in the production and everyone involved agrees that making the film was a special time in their lives.

Advantages: My most favourite film ever Disadvantages: I think my video is worn out!!
This is a film that I can watch time after time! There are still clever parts of it that I feel I should watch it again for - just to see if I can work it all out!
The film opens in the present day with a new playwright, Richard Collier (Christopher Reeve) at the opening of his latest play. In the audience sits an elderly lady who remains in the theatre watching the cast congratulating the writer after the curtain has fallen.
She eventually walks ... ...him and a hush falls around them as she presses something into his hand and says: 'Come back to me'. He opens his hand as she leaves and reveals a pocket watch, his friends ask him who she is but he really has no idea.
The film moves to years later where Richard Collier is seen suffering from writers block following the breakup of his current relationship. His agent is pestering him and in desperation Richard takes off in his car with apparently ...

Advantages: Feel Good Movie, Soothing and Touching Disadvantages: Incredible plot
This is a change of image for my favorite Superman. This film is for the hopeless romantics such as me. The plot is not credible to happen in real life but who cares! This is not the first movie that used incredible plot. Hence despite this and some hard to believe things like when Richard just closes his eyes and concentrate to travel through time and a lot of unbelievable coincidences, I still found the movie worth my time. It was so sweet. It ... ...sacrificing everything in his present time just to search for his past love. That is true love and it hits my soft spot. The acting may not be superb but passable. The soundtrack is very impressive. This is what I love most. I have watched this movie twice and each time it did not fail to make me fall in love again. ...

Advantages: Great Gig, Great Xtras Disadvantages: Visual Quality Poorer than expected.
Live after death is simply one of the best known live releases from the band. It is simply one of the best 80s performances by the band but not the best in my opinion, as fantastic as live after death is i still preferred maiden england and Somewhere on Tour only because the range of songs is larger by the inclusion of somewhereintime and seventh son, and the quality of the gigs are better. That takes me to the quality of live after death on DVD. There is no doubt the sound has been remastered to excellence but the visuals do look a bit too grainy compared to the effort put into the sound. The extras on the DVD are really good and contain quite a bit of extra content but again the quality of the extras is poor especially the added Rock in Rio 85 extra in which the quality is poor but it wasn't a remastered edition. Overall live after ...
Advantages: What extras there are complement the film well Disadvantages: Might only appeal to a specific audience, few extra features
really enjoyed (being an Austen enthusiast) was the inclusion of Emma's Golden Globes acceptance speech which she had cleverly worded so it resembled the language of Jane Austen's time - sadly for Emma (who is clearly a very intelligent lady) I don't think the wit was fully appreciated by her audience, but I liked her originality.
Judging by what I picked up from the commentary, five years had passed between the original filming and the DVD release, which puts the commentary recording somewherein 1999 or 2000, so perhaps the limited number of extras on the DVD can be attributed to the relative youth of the DVD format, or the extent of its popularity at the time.
There are only two extra scenes (ie. ones cut from the final film) and neither was very long. Given that filming took about four months (I've got Emma Thompson's published ...
Advantages: funny movie, good transfer, good deleted scenes Disadvantages: not many extras for a hit mainstream movie
said about that the better.
It's been a while since I've done a DVD opinion so now's the time to get back into the swing of things and let you know what this shiny disc has to offer.
The film is presented in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen. Because the film is of a young age we get a pristine transfer with very little if not anything to fault. You may notice some grain or slight blemishes in the print if you look hard but considering the low budget status of the film this is a great effort.
As a rule on DVD whenever you watch a comedy film you really can't expect much from the soundtrack and Scary Movie is no exception. There are some good bass moments whenever a scare is to be found but overall the surrounds are used sparingly with the majority of the soundmix confined to the fron speakers. But like I've said this is what you ...
