My hub brought this home from our local DVD rental place.
I could vaguely remember the trailers - the words that came to my mind were 'cheesy, american, comedy...suppose it'll be alright.' The fact that Jack Nicholson is in it definitely persuaded me to sit down and give this film a chance.
The story....
Jack Nicholson plays a dirty old playboy - he is is the big cheese of a successful hip hop label, and enjoys his lavish lifestyle of partying and cavorting with lovely young women. He doesn't strike you as a particularly deep character to begin with. At the beginning we see Jack in an open top car driving another young lovely lass through the cheesy plastic american countryside, it turns out they are driving to her mothers place in the Hamptons for a dirty weekend no doubt - her mother is supposedly away. Well, needless to say, the mother - played by Diane Keaton (and auntie) - do turn up and catch randy old Harry (Jack Nicholson) in his pants. Cue awkward situation. Harry wants to leave, but ends up staying, then has a heart attack, and has to stay on in the Hamptons with Erica (Diane Keaton) - the 'lovelies' mother. What follows is an up and down will they won't they love affair betwwen Harry and Erica.
That is all I will tell you about the story - except that it is the basis of an extremely touching romance. With top class comedy as well throughout.
I never fail to find Jack Nicholson funny, and he performs to an equally high standard in this film as he did in About Shmidt, and As good as it gets. His character begins as somewhat a stereotype, but grows and becomes a deep and well rounded (with good bits and bad bits - warts n all) character. His heart attack seems to be the undoing of him.
Diane Keaton also puts in an extremely high quality performance. Her face alone can tell the story - she doesn't need to use words - I have really warmed to her thanks to this film.
Keanu Reeves also plays a fairly large part - although I don't think this is Keanu at his best. However he made the most of the somewhat wet and bland character of the Doctor who likes older women ,and has a crush on Erica ( Diane Keaton).
Most of the film takes place in the Hamptons at Ericas extremely beautiful (huge) house. The interior is VERY Martha Stewart - I quite enjoyed looking at the way it had been styled with part admriation, and part revulsion at the 'americaness' of the set. Howerver, it is entirely in keeping with the character of Erica who is very clean and scrubbed looking and wears whiter than white turtle necks throughout the film.
The comedy in this film is pretty much totally based around Jack Nicholsons character Harry. We see him bare his bum in a hilarious hospital scene, his huge tortoiseshell reading glasses provide plenty of laughs throughout, and more than anything it is just his face and mannerisms that set me off - I really laughed - big chest heaving roars of laughter in this film. In fact, some scenes were so funny that I found myself still laughing well into the next couple of scenes after the funny moment had passed. Though, I did cry too ( but not as much as I laughed).
The film ended satisfyingly - although I did think the ending came about three times througout the film before it actually ended! (this is not to say that it dragged on at all though) You will know what I mean when you see it.
My advice to you is don't pay too much attention to the somewhat misleading trailers - the film is deeper, more touching and most definitely funnier than they let on.
Directed by Pam Meyers
