Having previously directed the Mel Gibson vehicle “What Women Want”, Nancy Meyers is no stranger to the romantic comedy genre. Though she sticks to the rigid format of the genre, she manages to pack in more comedy and pathos than most writers and directors in this field. She has written a witty script, filled with realistic characters and more humorous situations than some so-called comedies and apart from a thirty second section at the end, has managed to steer clear of the mawkish sentimentality that can sink a rom-com. She has also brought together a pair of seasoned leads blessed with great comic timing and some younger established and up-and-coming stars, who manage not to hit a bum note throughout.
Jack Nicholson has been wearing the most-talented-actor-of-his generation hat for aeons now. Not bad for a man who’s been plying his “Mad Jack” persona for the best part of fifty years. As Harry Sanborn he gets the opportunity to showcase his considerable comedic talents. It’s also a chance to poke fun at his own reputation as a hell-raiser and womaniser – I’m guessing that he was the first and only logical choice to play Sanborn. The real joy of this character is that it is so well drawn, you get the impression that this guy has been around doing what he’s doing forever – a bit like Jack Nicholson (which makes me think he might not be acting). The character appears to be a cross between Melvyn Udall from “As Good As It Gets” and Darryl Van Horn from “The Witches of Eastwick” – he’s a cantankerous old codger with a libido he can’t control. He starts off as a thoroughly contemptible old letch, but after his heart attack, he mellows somewhat and becomes far more sympathetic. And the transformation doesn’t seem forced because it is a gradual journey of self-discovery instead of a lightning fast switch. It helps that it’s pulled off with considerable comic aplomb. Also the character’s relationship with Erica grows along similar lines, so his interest in her doesn’t seem unusual. Oddly, one of the funniest moments in the film is the sight of an anaesthetised and confused Harry wandering around, showing off his backside in a hospital gown. Overall, it’s a rounded performance that makes good use of its star.
Diane Keaton is one of those women who’s been labouring under one of Hollywood’s biggest delusions; that if a woman is over forty, no-one is going to pay money to see her in a film. It doesn’t seem to have occurred to the mainly male studio executives that it isn’t just male actors who become more accomplished with age. Here Keaton finally gets a chance to show what a great comic actress she is. She plays Erica with strength and confidence, but a touch of vulnerability, as befits a mature self-made woman who has been hurt before. The character of Erica goes through a similar transformation to the Harry character; when we first meet her she is frosty and distant, but as the film progresses, we come to understand that the only reason she is so aloof is to protect herself from possible heartache. It is something of a relief when she finally opens up, although her witty repartee with Sanborn is deliciously spiky. It helps that there is real chemistry between Keaton and Nicholson. Keaton has admitted that she had a crush on him when they first worked together on “Reds” over twenty years ago and their relationship on screen here seems natural and has an air of comfortability about it, which may not have been present, had the leading couple not worked together before. It is an excellent performance and Keaton certainly deserved her Oscar nomination for it. Although there may be a few knowing looks, she has a lightness of touch and even in the most obvious of situations, she refrains from going over the top. Her crying fit is hilarious and one of the highlights of the film. Hopefully after this we will see more of her on the big screen.
Amanda Peet has been around for a while now and has steadily been making her way up the Hollywood career ladder. Here she consolidates her position with a turn that is both sweet and alluring. She takes a character that could otherwise have been an empty-headed bimbo and gives her a solid emotional core and therefore renders her likeable. It helps that she has the kind of beauty that is not overpowering and a considerable talent behind it. It’s not the most spectacular performance in the film, but it is a decent one that seeks to underline the two stars rather than undermine them.
Keanu Reeves has been on my top totty list for about the last ten years but he has never made it into my actors top ten because he’s very nice to look at but doesn’t know his Shakespeare from his elbow. It’s surprising how good he is in this. He’s far more charming than I ever thought him capable of and Nancy Meyer’s should be commended for teasing such a show of acting from him. He even seems intelligent enough to be a doctor.
Frances McDormand makes a cameo as Erica’s college professor sister and fairly lights up the screen in the few minutes she has. Paul Michael Glaser (the original Starsky from “Starsky and Hutch”) also pops up as Erica’s ex-husband and director of all her plays.
The soundtrack is unobtrusive, the editing is pacy and the costumes are all pretty good. There isn’t anything I can fault the film on. It’s taken a Hollywood standard and turned it on its head, with a man choosing to date older rather than younger women. It’s full of gags to make you smile or even laugh and features sterling performances from all concerned. It’s well directed and the romance is kept contained so it is never sickening. And it proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that strong, intelligent women over fifty can be alluring and even sexy. So take your mum to see it and have her faith restored.
Advantages: amusing, great performances Disadvantages: same old Nicholson
From the director of What Women Want comes Nancy Meyers’ latest flick. Harry Sanborn (Jack Nicholson) is a 63 year old womaniser. The thing is, he just can’t help himself when it comes to lovelies young enough to be his daughter. His latest squeeze is Marin, a beautiful brunette. She decides to take him to her mother’s beach house one weekend to enjoy some sun and fun, thinking they’ll have the place to themselves.
However, once Harry is stripped ... ...Playwright Erica Barry (Diane Keaton) and her sister Zoe (Francis McDormand) do not know who the strange man in their kitchen is, and threaten to call the police until Harry explains who he is.
Erica is immediately concerned that her daughter is going out with a man so much older. Harry stays for a dinner that turns out to be an uncomfortable meal as Erica bombards him with questions and asks why he feels the need to go out with younger women.

Advantages: Keanu Reeves and Frances McDormand Disadvantages: Incredibly annoying performances from Keaton and Nicholson
When Erica Barry meets her daughter's boyfriend for the first time, she is surprised at his age - Harry Sanborn is in his sixties, while her daughter is still a very young woman. After Harry falls ill at their house, Erica has time to get to know him better and, although Harry usually goes for twenty-somethings, there is a definite attraction between the two and they eventually get together. But Harry's tendency for young things gets in the way, ... ...thing - the gorgeous Dr Julian who is in his thirties. Is this the end of Erica and Harry's relationship? Or is there more still to come?
I dislike Diane Keaton with a passion. It is nothing personal - I'm sure she is a very nice lady - but she annoys the pants off me every time I see her on screen. The fact that she has worked so much with Woody Allen, someone else I hate with a passion (again, it's not personal!), does not help her case. As Erica, ...

Advantages: Jack Nicholson Disadvantages: the trailers didn't do it justice
My hub brought this home from our local DVD rental place. I could vaguely remember the trailers - the words that came to my mind were 'cheesy, american, comedy...suppose it'll be alright.' The fact that Jack Nicholson is in it definitely persuaded me to sit down and give this film a chance.
The story....
Jack Nicholson plays a dirty old playboy - he is is the big cheese of a successful hip hop label, and enjoys his lavish lifestyle of partying ... ...as a particularly deep character to begin with. At the beginning we see Jack in an open top car driving another young lovely lass through the cheesy plastic american countryside, it turns out they are driving to her mothers place in the Hamptons for a dirty weekend no doubt - her mother is supposedly away. Well, needless to say, the mother - played by Diane Keaton (and auntie) - do turn up and catch randy old Harry (Jack Nicholson) in his pants. ...

...We had to choose between Something's Gotta Give and Big Fish. So after a small discussion =) we went to see the first one. And let me tell you at the beginning I like it very much!!! The film is written and directed by Nancy Meyers, who gave us also What Women Want, The Parent Trap and all too many Fathers of the Bride. The main stars in it are Amanda Peet, Diane Keaton, Jack Nicholson, and Keanu Reeves. I love Keanu Reeves! I like very much Jack ... ...What about Something's Gotta Give – it’s a simple story about 63-year-old multi-millionaire entrepreneur and philanderer Harry Sanborn / Jack Nicholson/, 28-year-old Marin (Amanda Peet) and her 55-year-old mother Erica Barry /Diane Keaton/. The ages of the characters are very important because its one of the main things in the film. Harry, who is also a creator of the world's second biggest rap company, Drive By Records never dates anyone over 30. ...

Advantages: Great as far as romcom goes Disadvantages: Predictable
Something's Gotta Give (2003) is a comedy from the director of What Women Want (2003). It is a comedy comprising the talents of Jack Nicholson and Diane Keaton. Meyers was also the writer of Father of the Bride (1991) and Private Benjamin (1980), so this has 'chick flick suitable for guys, too' written all over it.
The Plot
Harry Sanborn is a 50-something confirmed bachelor, who agrees to go with his much younger girlfriend Marin to her mum's holiday ... ...tension in the air, and something's gotta give!!!
The Cast and Performances
Jack Nicholson and Diane Keaton play Harry and Erica respectively. They are both immensely capable and celebrated performers, and they show why here. Nicholson as a physical specimen is short of attractive, but the charisma he exudes through the screen is amazing. Keaton is looking very good for her age, and her sexual power is present in this film.
With Amanda Peet and ...

Advantages: Good cast Disadvantages: lack of chemistry between main characters
character, Miles and Kate Winslet's just isn't beliveable there is no chemistry whatsoeve, which is a shame as really like the both of them. It's nice to see Jude Law playing a role where he isn't sure of himself but again he's so good looking that this also is hard to believe. The best relationship in the film is the companionship that Iris has with Arthur but the film doesn't really follow through with that.
Like most romance films it's pretty predictable but fams of this genre won't mind that so much. On the whole it's an ok film, it'll give you the warm fuzzy feeling but I doubt anyone would watch it more than once. i know I won't.

DVD Description
In the sparkling comedy SOMETHING'S GOTTA GIVE directed by Nancy Meyers (WHAT WOMEN WANT), divorced, successful playwright Erica Barry (Diane Keaton) has given up on finding a fulfilling romantic relationship. When her beautiful young daughter Marin (Amanda Peet) visits the family's Hamptons home with her ageing, lothario boyfriend Harry Sanborn (Jack Nicholson), Erica's plight as a mature, single woman comes into stark focus. Harry exclusively dates young women, which infuriates Erica. Though initially they repel each other, things change when Harry has a heart attack and Erica comes to his aid. The two make peace and discover a smoldering attraction to one another. However, love never comes without complications. Harry still has a romantic obligation to Marin, and Erica gets a taste of Harry's lifestyle when the sexy young doctor Julian (Keanu Reeves) hits on her. Whether Erica and Harry can reconcile their differences provides the premise for an elegant, touching, and amusing tale. In their first movie together since REDS, Keaton and Nicholson share natural chemistry, each giving powerful and moving performances under Meyers' expert direction.
