Read any professional film critic’s Top 10 All Time Favourite Films, and I guarantee you that Some Like it Hot will be in there somewhere. Indeed it recently came in at number 5 in FilmFour’s All Time Top 100. It was the only out-and-out comedy in the entire Top 20, and one of very few black and white movies in the whole list.
So what is it about this 1959 film that makes it such an enduring classic?
The Stars ========= Some Like it Hot stars Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon, three of the biggest actors of the day who have all received loads of critical acclaim for their lives’ work.
The Director ============ SLIH was directed by Billy Wilder, veteran of other classics in different genres such as Sunset Boulevard, Double Indemnity, The Apartment and The Seven Year Itch. A master of timing whether he was making suspense or comedy, Wilder was at his absolute best on this film and keeps up a relentless pace. Gags – both visual and spoken – come thick and fast, thanks both to the direction and the sparkling script which Wilder co-wrote.
The Plot ======== Lemmon and Curtis are two violin players who witness the St Valentine’s Day Massacre. On the run from the mob, they dress up as women and join an all-girl band in a rich holiday hotel. Along the way Curtis falls for Marilyn Monroe – Sugar, the band’s singer – and Lemmon gets to like being a girl a little too much, half-falling for a rich old man called Osgood in the process.
Much of the plot and comic suspense derives from the will-they-won’t-they get found out theme, and there are plenty of moments when they almost do.
This movie played with cross-dressing and gender identity at a time when to treat it seriously would have been strictly taboo. It was a groundbreaker in bringing the issue into the public domain, even if it was playing strictly for laughs.
At the film’s end, the mob reappear at the hotel for their annual conference and Lemmon and Curtis are unmasked, leading to a fantastic and hilarious ‘chase’ through rooms, under tables and down drainpipes.
The Performances ================ Lemmon and Curtis are impeccable. Their attempts at femininity, their timing and their facial expressions are hilarious. They do not waste one single line or shot.
Lemmon’s increasing relaxation into the female persona is a joy, and the dance scene with him and Osgood never fails to get me giggling.
In contrast, Curtis’s detestation of his own ‘feminine side’ is equally engrossing. The scenes between him and Lemmon arguing over gender issues are fantastic.
Witness also Curtis’s other persona in the film, masquerading as a rich playboy wooing Marilyn to his yacht. It’s pure Cary Grant and absolutely brilliant.
And now to Marilyn. For me it’s her finest performance ever. Cute, ditzy, but also sharp as a knife and worldly-wise and melancholy, she squeezes every ounce of humour and pathos out of her lines.
Mention must be made too of Joe E Brown as Osgood, a deliciously flirtatious and passionate woman-hunter who sets his sights on Lemmon and delivers the best line ever to end a film. (Though I won’t tell you what it is!)
The Gossip ========== As much has been written of the events surrounding the film as of the film itself.
First there is Curtis’s famous remark that kissing Monroe was ‘like kissing Hitler’.
Then there are the tales of the troubled, chubby Marilyn (who may or may not have been pregnant and miscarried during or just after filming). They never knew from one day to the next whether she would turn up or not. And when she did, she might not emerge from her trailer all day. Clothes didn’t fit, she drank, she cried. All of this adds to the mythology that now surrounds this movie.
Conclusion ========== Nothing worth doing is ever easy, and legend has it that making this film was a nightmare. But was it worth it!
There are no special effects. There is no surround sound. There is not even colour. There is just a cracking script, a top-notch director, a terrific story and three masterful actors.
Recently voted by the American Film Institute as the Best Comedy of the Century, Some Like it Hot is a consistently funny, sharp, witty and unique satire that has never been surpassed for sheer class.
...We're taking a gander at Some Like It Hot. Alright?
Jazz musicians Joe and Jerry are in trouble. The mob are after them in the form of Spats Columbo after the pair were witnesses to the St. Valentines Day Massacre but what are a trombone player and a double bass player to do? There's no work out there for a couple of guys and with no cash it looks as though they might be cashing in their chips with the big casino in the sky. But hang on, there's ... ...so many 'rave' reviews of Some Like It Hot I tended to give it a wide berth and it wasn't until the arrival of Mrs TheNeil that things did an about face (why does this not surprise us). With all the critics lauding about how funny and entertaining it was, what hope did it stand of entertaining someone who's notoriously stoney faced when it comes to film comedy - hmmmm.
The story opts for that most useful of eras, the depression. There is much source ...

Advantages: Great cast, great characters, good storyline and funny , classic Disadvantages: None fore me but the black and white may deter some viewers.
Some Like it Hot has become a classic in so many ways. Filmed in 1959, in black and white, it had a great cast, hilarious plot and seems to have stood the test of time. I know lots of younger viewers do not like black and white films but it fits with this film and the period it is set in so well, plus is still a very funny film, although obviously a little dated now. I have had the video a while, as I just enjoy watching this film when I want some ... ...who may not have seen Some Like It Hot but at times it borders on farce, whilst at other times the humour is more subtle. When Jerry and Joe eventually end up in Florida romantic complications set in, that are more than a little strange. It's odd isn't it that when two men dress up as women, although they do not really look like women, they are often still sort of attractive.
The main players are a youngish Marilyn Monroe alongside an equally youngish ...

Because not only is there the romantic sub plot of Sugar, but the plot between Joe dressed as 'Daphne' and the womanising old playboy who falls in love with him. Some of Monroe's desperate fragility comes through in the character particularly in the earlier scenes, and a rare talent for comedy as well. The dresses she wears, and the songs she sings, show why she remains a sex symbol for thousands. Tony Curtis is having terrific fun playing the womanising role, dressing up in an attempt to win Sugar's heart. You would never guess from him that apparantly kissing Marilyn Monroe was like ...

...5/5
The comic actor has some hilarious sequences in this film and gives a killingly funny portrayal of the ageing, but nevertheless jolly millionaire Osgood Fielding who persistently courts Daphne.
Pat O'Brien as _Agent Mulligan_ - 5/5
This role is probably the one he is best known for - and rightly: he does an excellent job in portraying the FBI agent and the audience can see that he really enjoys his role.

Billy Wilder (after the film was finished): "I can look at my wife again without wanting to hit her because she was a woman."

Billy Wilder: "I miss her. It was like going to the dentist, making a picture with her. It was hell at the time, but after it was over, it was wonderful."

SomeLikeItHot is an outstanding film, featuring brilliant perfomances from Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon and the supporting cast. It's laugh-out-loud funny, with an excellent plot that'll have you hooked from the off and songs that'll be stuck in your head for weeks!
Made in 1959, this film instantly became a hit and with time, a classic. The story was co-written by Robert Thoeren and Michael Logan. They had used the same premise for a film made in Germany in 1951 called Fanfaren der Liebe, and proceeded to alter and update it until it became the version we know today. Billy Wilder (who also produced Avanti! Sabrina and The Seven Year Itch) proceeded to direct it and et voila - a film is made.
Director Billy Wilder had originally considered Mitzi Gayno rather than Marilyn Monroe for the main female role ...

**About the main actors:**
Obviously, with such a fantastic cast, I could talk about them for ages. However, to cut it down a little, I have decided to put in a little information about only the five main actors.
Marilyn Monroe: Born on 1st June, 1926 in Los Angeles, California, USA, Marilyn was 33 when she acted Sugar Kane in 'Somelikeithot', who, incidentally, was nearly 25. This was her 27th major film, and she went on to make only 3 more before her death due to an overdose on 5th August 1962 in Los Angeles, California, USA. Monroe's interest in the film was a surprise to Wilder, and the participation of one of Hollywood's leading sex symbols transferred the film into a major event. However the time during which the film was being produced she was going through a very difficult time ...

DVD Description
Billy Wilder's classic SOME LIKE IT HOT is one of Hollywood's most beloved comedies. Two musicians (the outrageously hilarious Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis) are forced to go on the run from gangsters and end up posing as women in an all-girl band, which includes a never-better Marilyn Monroe. While Curtis falls for Monroe, Lemmon gets stuck with Joe E. Brown. The film is ranked number 1 on the American Film Institute's list of America's 100 Funniest Movies.
