The Making of a Maestrois a moving film of the life of conductor Sir Georg Solti, ... more
completed by producer/director Peter Maniura shortly before Solti's death in 1997. One of the most dynamic conductors of the 20th century, Solti gained something of a reputation as a tartar on the rostrum--"like playing for Mephisto," as one member of the Chicago Symphony puts it. Yet it's theatre director Sir Peter Hall's phrase, "a deeply lyrical soul", that comes to the fore watching this beautifully photographed film from the BBC'sOmnibusseries. Solti may have driven his orchestrasand singers to a point where some of them felt cajoling became bullying, but it was always at the service of the music. This documentary sensibly does not take a view on Solti's ranking in the hierarchy of great conductors; instead Maniura wisely lets the conductor's words tell the story, making this film a very personal one.Over half the running time is devoted to Solti's upbringing and post-war years in Munich, where he built up the bombed-out opera house from scratch. Solti's friendship with Richard Strauss makes for a poignant interlude. His initial unpopularity at Covent Garden, where the opera posters were frequently daubed "Solti must go", his achievement at raising their orchestral standards, as well as his later starrier role as conductor of the Chicago Symphony, are also given their full due. Maniura handles the musical soundtrack with sensitivity, pointing up many striking images with music to create indelible impressions. The film concludes with Solti at his grandparents' grave reflecting without bitterness on those relatives--such as his father--who were never buried but disappeared in the Holocaust. The Making of a Maestrois an inspirational film from which the viewer cannot but help take heart. On the DVD:No special features to speak of, although the DVD trailer promotes other ArtHaus Musik productions, including their award-winningDamnation of Faust, the Penderecki choral workThe Seven Gates of Jerusalem, Claudio Abbado conducting a New Year's Gala and Herbert Blomstedt a performance of Beethoven's Fifth.--Adrian Edwards

Advantages: Funny a good watch Disadvantages: Too predictable.
.
It comes around to their 10-year high school reunion which they're both dreading as they know they've barely changed, neither of them has a good job, neither of them are in a relationship, and neither of them have anything to show for their 10-years since leaving school. But they go anyway, only to be disappointed to discover all their old classmates are bigger and better than them. Whilst at the reunion they meet up with an old school pal, who has since turned gay and become a gay porn star- Zack finds out he is earnign $100k a year and it gives him an idea for Miri and he to make money.
When they get home to find their electricity cut off and no running water, drastic times call for drastic measures, and Zack puts the idea of making a porn film to Miri. They decide after much deliberating that its a great idea, as neither of them ...
Advantages: It's short. Disadvantages: It's formulaic and the dancing and direction are poor.
-over-adversity storyline and have watched everything as a result. But not every movie of this ilk is worth seeing. Sadly "Make it Happen" falls into that category. It is an example of the worst kind of movie-making-by-the-numbers thanks to the insipid direction and equally disappointing performances. But much of the blame must lie with director Darren Grant. Considering he has made a living out of directing pop promos, you'd think he'd have a better idea about how to make dance routines to formulaic hip-hop and r 'n' b seem fresh and exciting. But he fails utterly in this most basic and crucial aspect. In a club scene, his use of hand-held cameras should make the dancing feel edgy and immediate, but he fails to focus on the most interesting aspects of the dancers' routines. The dance numbers lack snap as a result of his lax editing, making them seem dull ...
Advantages: Dei Toro on form Disadvantages: Perhaps not for all!
interesting if that is your sort of thing. There is a 2 hour (wow) documentary of the movie and featurettes that involve tours of the sets etc. You get a few deleted scenes , TV spots, character biographies, Photos, DVD Comics ( 8 of them ) and four short films. Im out of breath now that was alot to list! The features are all good. It makes the DVD worth over £10. I think however you can pick it up for around £8 which is a bargain and a half. Definatley one worth adding to your collection. It may pay to wait till the next movie comes out as you will probably get some good deals as promotion. There are some animated Hellboy DVD's out there two so you may get a box set or something!
I cant reccomend this movie enough. You need to go and buy it. Its a good movie. Sure there are some daft moments but it is action packed and is a real thril ride!! ...
