Advantages: Quite good, nice effects and a good watch for pure entertainment reasons Disadvantages: extremly mediocre in every other way
Soldier is a mediocre movie, that with an open mind and a need for a bit of sci-fi action can be quite good. The plot is a bit 'for the sake of it' the acting is 'alright' and the sound track is OK. All in all a very neutral film if looked at objectivly. Starring Kurt Russel as the 'Soldier', who has less lines than the hyped up Darth Maul in Star Wars, actually does quite well at playing this almost mass produced warrior.
The storyline is basically ... ...some kind started taking unwanted baby's from orphanages and putting them through a rigerous training/indoctrination programme. Everything from marksmanship to violent brainwashing. There was also a health spa on Thursdays, as well as Karaoke on a Saturday night:) We see Kurt Russel go up through the ages an he is singled out as the best of his 'company'. We then see a quick flash of the missions he's been on and then we are brought into the movie ...

Advantages: An action film with more than glib one liners to say Disadvantages: Slo-mo cryin'
...new soldiers, including Kane, the soldier who almost killed Russell's character and who he blinded. Commence the showdown.
Aside from Kurt Russell who most people will be familiar with, Kane is aptly played by Jason Scott Lee (The Jungle Book). The supporting cast includes Sean Pertwee (51st state, Dog Soldiers) and Connie Nielsen (Gladiator) as well a short cameo by Gary Busey (Lethal Weapon, Under Siege). The sadly repetative nasty English dude ... ...Down).
Seems to me that a lot of people expected this to be Rambo in space, and would have been far happier if it was.
I'm certainly happy it was'nt - Kurt does a fine job of portraying an emotional cripple. The scene where he's sitting outside the compound shows this, albeit the decision for two slow-mo replays detracts from the moment.
This is not a classic SF movie in the way that Bladerunner, Alien, Silent running, Logan's run or THX1138 were, ...

Advantages: Excellent all round effort Disadvantages: A bit samey with other war films
the film is much like other war films in terms of characterisation and a group of men in the war striving for safety. There is a limit to how many different stances you can take on a war film, and this one does have similarities to films such as Saving Private Ryan, and I'm sure others will see this too.
However, this doesn't spoil it for me at all, and I was thoroughly impressed by it. It's not perfect, but definitely worth watching. The DVD for Saints and Soldiers is currently available from amazon.co.uk for a decent price, and I recommend it. ...
Advantages: Scary. Excellent special effects. Some good 'one liners'. Disadvantages: Still not as good as "An American Werewolf in London".
~ ~ There seems to have been a bit of a dearth of decent movies on the new releases shelves of the local video shop just recently. Or maybe it’s just that the ‘mad cabbie’ is becoming more selective in his viewing these days.
Anyhow, the weather here in Dublin has been so bad the last couple of days, (50mm of rain in two days!!) that last night I found myself frantically scanning the new titles in the hope of finding something to while away a couple of hours in front of the fire.
I have to admit that I picked up the DVD “Dog Soldiers” (2002) with no great enthusiasm, but the blurb on the back cover at least looked promising. Soldiers attacked by werewolves in a remote Scottish glen.
“Should at least provide a wee bit of gore and action”, I thought.
And believe me, I wasn’t disappointed ...
Advantages: great plot, touching characters Disadvantages: none
I had never heard of this film until i purchased the DVD in HMV; and let me tell you now that this film is a true war film that is just as good as saving private ryan, stalingrad or pearl harbour.
