This has got to be one of my favourite movies of all time. It has everything really that a movie needs; bad poetry (Well you don’t often see that in a movie now do you?), humour, a great entertainer (In my books), some classic lines and of course a mad axe murderer <g>.
The film So I Married an Axe Murderer was made in 1993. It was directed by Thomas Schlamme and written by Robbie Fox. The film was billed as a 15 (Meaning it is unsuitable for anyone under this age to watch) in the UK. It is in the comedy genre and although the main cast aren’t all well known they certainly do the film justice. Cast is as follows… Mike Myers .... Charlie Mackenzie/Stuart Mackenzie Nancy Travis .... Harriet Michaels Anthony LaPaglia .... Tony Giardino Amanda Plummer .... Rose Michaels Mike Myers really does a fantastic job of playing Charlie (The hero if you wish) and his father as well (Stuart). Being such a versatile actor he seems to be able to turn his hand to anything and he shows this
in these roles he plays in the movie. His main character Charlie is soft, gentle and very amusing not to mention has a strong American accent but his father Stuart is heavily Scottish, rowdy and obnoxious to a point. I think he plays the both equally strong and really pulls the job off well. Nancy Travis plays Harriet (The main female), who may or may not be an axe murderer for she has a habit of having disappearing husbands on her wedding nights. She holds the mystery of this throughout the whole film as to whether it is her who kills them off. (I’d like to point out now by no means is this film a horror or should it be build that way. It is a comedy with black intentions). She seems timid yet forceful at times and really makes you believe that she has gone through some stuff. I must admit, I like this woman’s character and think she’s brilliant! Anthony LaPaglia plays Tony who is like a 70’s pimp. He is a policeman and reminds me of a through back from a 70’s movie. His mannerisms are amusing yet forceful at times and he seems to respond well to Charlie (Mike Myers), which should be the case as they are best friends in the film. Amanda Plummer plays Rose. She is a strange character. I really don’t want to say a lot about her other than she is Harriet’s sister and is very odd! She is intriguing and plays the character really well. Over all I thought the acting and performance of all characters was great and with a fantastic script too this really makes the film a good one in my books!
The Plot As usual you know I don’t like to give a lot away in case you haven’t seen the film, but I can give you a brief outline that might tempt you into submission <g>. It’s about a young guy named Charlie who I can only really describe as a beatnik poet is our main character who seems to have a lot of problems with relationships. This might have something to do with the (sometimes) poor advice he gets from Tony his best friend. His life of relationships seems doomed till he meets Harriet. She beautiful, clever and funny but she has a dark and mysterious secret and Charlie might just find out what it is!
Availability and Pricing Looking on the web I have found the video and DVD are widely available for buying. I cannot say for high street shops although I would imagine places like WHSmith’s and HMV could order the film in for you if you requested. Here’s the best prices I found online and where… VHS Video – £5.09 (Inc, postage and packing) from ChoicesDirect (Http://www.choicesdirect.co.uk DVD (Wide screen) – £7.99 (Inc, postage and packing) from Splash DVD (Http://www.splashdvd.com) DVD (Normal screen) - £8.49 (Inc, postage and packing) from Play.com (Http://www.play.com) The DVD’s only include dubbed films for different languages and subtitles. There is also a theatrical trailer as well, but this is the only bonus.
My final Conclusion I love this film, with classic lines line, ‘HEAD, PANTS, NOW’ (You have to watch the film to find it funny) and, ‘He puts an addictive formula into it to make you crave it fortnightly!!’. It has me laughing most of the way through, the story line isn’t slow and is full of surprises if not a bit quirky. If anything I’d recommend this for anyone who needs a good laugh. Mike Myers is fantastic in it. The cast work well together and the film isn’t too long at 93 minutes, so you won’t get bored or a numb bum, well not too much anyway. I give this 10 out of 10 and say if you haven’t seen it, go and get it!
