My beloved husband had a heart attack last week. It was the scariest afternoon of my life from the moment he called me at work to say he?d had severe chest pains for over 3 hours and did I think he had swine flu, me telling him to put down the phone immediately and call an ambulance with his exact location to me getting through to the hospital over 2 hours later to find out he?d indeed had a heart attack but had been treated and was stable and in recovery. Frankie My Dear...

Advantages: A sweet tale with endearing performances
Disadvantages: Feels more like a TV drama than a proper film

Young single mother Lizzie is so afraid of her abusive ex-husband that she continually moves around the country with her nine year-old son. In order to protect him from the truth, she tells Frankie that his dad is away at sea and sends him letters in the guise of his father. But when she learns the ship he?s supposed to be working on is due to dock, she threatens to be exposed. So she hires a handsome stranger to pose as Frankie?s dad, never realising that he will change the dynamic of the family forever. ?Dear Frankie? Shona Auerbach?s feature debut and she shows a firm hand with what could have been a terribly mawkish script. Her direction is spare and underplays the more emotionally manipulative aspects of the film, such as Frankie?s deafness. I Am Trying To Break Your Heart DVD

Advantages: Beautifully made document of beautiful-art-in-the-making.
Disadvantages: Maybe a bit much for non-fans.

As Bands-In-Crisis documentaries go, Sam Jones' 2002 film focusing on Wilco at the most turbulent and creatively-fertile period in their career thus far is much closer to Micahel Lindsey-Hogg's 1970 Let It Be than, for example, Berlinger & Sinofsky's 2004 Some Kind Of Monster. Like the Beatles' picture, it is an essential, stunningly-made film but one that, in contrast to the insanely-entertaining Metallica feature, is unlikely to work for anyone uninterested in the band under consideration. If one does find oneself drawn to Jeff Tweedy and Co.'s blinding, genre-shredding prog-Americana, though (and really - why wouldn't you?), then I Am Trying To Break Your Heart is as engrossing a couple hours as can be found outside of, say, a couple spins of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, the making of which provides the core of the film.
