Well, where to start with this. This was the scariest cartoon I had as a child and I still think it is creepy now!
This is the continuation of the Disney classic we all know and love. It is not Disney, it is Starvison Filmation's Snow White In "Happily Ever After".
Basically, it starts off where the Disney one finishes. Snow White is happily getting married to her Prince (who has no name apparently!) and is riding off into the sunset with him. She wants to invite the seven dwarfs to the wedding, so they are going to ask them. Snow White stops to pick some flowers in a field, and thinking that she has nothing to fear with the wicked Queen gone, she happily takes her time. Then, out of nowhere a huge dragon swoops down and grabs her and flys away with her. The Prince manages to shoot the dragon's leg with an arrow and he lets Snow White go. He then turns on the Prince and the Prince tells Snow White to run into a forest nearby and not look back. The dragon then turns into a tall dark (very sinister!) man who goes by the name of Lord Maliss (voiced by Malcolm McDowell). He resides in the "Realm Of Doom". He had come back to see his sister, but then the magic looking glass told him that she is dead because of Snow White. Lord Maliss vows revenge on Snow White and the Prince.
Snow White finally comes to the seven Dwarf's house but falls asleep as she gets there. When she wakes up she discovers that this is no longer the seven Dwarfs house, but the home of the seven Dawrfelles (the Dwarfs lady cousins!) She makes friends with them and they tell her they will help her to find her Prince.
Each of the Dwarfelles have special powers- Thunderella is supposed to be in charge of the weather (but she is not very good at it), whilst Criterina has the power to talk to animals. There's sunburn, in charge of the sun, Moonbeam, Muddy and a couple of others! They have been given their powers by "Mother Nature" who they go to see with Snow White. She tries to help them with Lord Maliss, but he is far more powerful than her.
We also get to meet "Batso" and "Scowl", a bat and owl who reside in the Realm Of Doom. Scowl wants to get into Lord Maliss's good books by being bad and trying to help him capture Snow White, but he only succeeds in messing things up, with much hilarity ensuing.
Along the way on the trip to the realm of doom to find the Prince, Snow White and the Dwarfelles come across a strange man/creature that they call "the shadow man", at first they think he is going to harm them, but he appears to be helping them, you will find out at the end who he is and why he is helping them.
This cartoon is rated U for Universal, maybe I was a very sheltered child but I found this very scary! I'm sure kids nowadays (I sound so old!) will find it tame, afterall Disney can throw some scary villains out such as Maleficent in "Sleeping Beauty" (who I also thought was very scary) and the Queen in the original "Snow White".
I always liked this film, perhaps moreso than the original, I do find it quite funny at times and it has some decent songs in it for a cartoon. It was made in 1987, so obviously a long time after the original, maybe thats why I prefer it slightly because it is more modern and up-to date.
One thing I don't like is the Prince. For a start, what Prince has no name? I know he is just meant to be "Prince Charming", and the Prince in the original doesn't have a name (as far as I can remember) but she had just met him then and he wasn't in it much. I always found that a really funny part of the film. Also, to be shallow- he's not very good-looking for a Prince Charming! Nothing like the Prince in the original.
Snow White is voiced by Irene Cara and as stated earlier, Malcolm McDowell voices Lord Maliss- part of his scariness is the voice, it is played very well by McDowell. Other voices include- Zsa Zsa Gabor, Tracy Ullman and Edward Asner.
Programme running time- approx 71 minutes.
I'm just reviewing the film as I have the video, but I think the DVD would be the same.
You can pick this up from Amazon.co.uk for £3.97 on DVD.
I love my Disney films, but I think this does a good job compared to other non-Disney cartoon's. I read a review of this film that only gave it one star! I would give it four stars, but I think I'm largely alone in thinking this is not a bad sequel, so I knocked a star off!
I would recommend it, but that creepy Lord Maliss might give your child nightmares like it did with me!
