Snow Dogs is one of those cheesy Disney family movies that you can't help liking. It was released in 2002 and stars Cuba Gooding Jr, who had recently broken into the main casting scene on the big screen. The film is essentially a poignant comedy which features some clever special effects work and that traditional addition of classic Disney family movies: animals!
Dr Ted Brooks is a successful dentist who hates dogs. When he finds out he has inherited some property including a team of sled dogs, he dons his winter wear and heads to collect his new property and tries his best to fit into his new surroundings. He soon finds this hard as everyone judges him, and he must adapt to earn the respect of his new neighbours, some new enemies, and hardest of all: the dogs!
Cuba Gooding Jr gives a very cheesy performance as the black dentist finding himself out of his depth and entering the Arctic Race with sled dogs. The actor doesn't really have to do much here: the stars of the show are blatantly the huskies, which are beautiful. The special effects work to amend some of their facial expressions is very clever. Gooding is joined by a good cast, including James Coburn and Nichelle Nichols, and they all do well.
Disney have a habit of giving us entertaining films that you can't really slate but that aren't anything special. The Beethoven series of films is on its 7th or 8th outing, I believe, but the films remain timeless and appeal to kids of most ages. They are harmless and do not feature anything inappropriate, and can be enjoyed as a family movie. I enjoyed watching Snow Dogs with my wife the other week. It was the second time I had watched it, and it still brought a smile to my face, and a slight tear to my wife's.
The DVD is available from amazon.co.uk for £4.98, and although it's a nice film, I personally wouldn't worry about buying it.
