This film has a Parental Guidance certificate, suitable for anybody to watch.
I have the VHS edition of this film which cost me £6.99 from Sanity, which I believe has now shut down. I'm quite sure it can be bought on DVD as well from all the usual places such as WHSmiths, Woolworths, Virgin, HMV, Amazon, Ebay etc.
This film comes under the comedy/family/action category of the movie world!
It has a running time of 99 minutes!! Trust me that's all you want!!
The film was made by Walt Disney!
***ACTORS AND ACTRESSES***
Cuba Gooding Jr - Pearl Harbour, Rat Race
James Coburn - Monsters Inc, American Gun
Nichelle Nichols - Numerous star trek movies!
Joanna Bacalso - Dude Where's My Car, Bedazzled
Sisqo - Pieces of April, Get Over It
***CHARACTERS***
Theodore (Ted) Brookes: Played by actor Cuba Gooding Jr. The dentist from Miami. Cracking jokes left, right and centre, Ted is never one to back down from a challenge or a fight, particuarly when it concerns who is real parents are!! Everyone wants to be him because he has the flashy job, the flashy car and basically the flashy life!! He's dead popular too and his face is on the side of all the buses!
Thunder Jack/James Johnson: Played by actor James Coburn. A stubborn old man and a huge fan of the Artic Challenge. Jack loves Lucy's dogs very much including Demon! He's never one to back down from a challenge and seems to be the outcast of the town. Everyone seems to fear him and to be honest Jack doesn't really do much to dispel this theory!!
Amelia Brookes: Played by actress Nichelle Nichols. Ted's mother. Now she means well, she really does....but believes in the personal touch in everything she does. She loves Ted very much but is protecting him from something......
Barb: Played by actress Joanna Bacalso. Barb would be the love interest people! Barb runs the local diner and this girl can kick some but when she wants to. She's more than a match for anyone and can take care of herself.
Rupert Brooks: Played by Sisqo. The little sidekick!! This guy means well too, but can have a serious attitude problem himself. A little more wacky than Ted, he's probably the most nosey and not so sensible of everyone!!
***DOGS***
DEMON: When we say Demon...we mean Demon! This dog has a serious attitude problem and is the lead dog or the driving force of the team!
YODEL: A wheel dog. Not the sharpest tool in the box but he'll go with whatever anybody else is doing
SNIFF: The same as Yodel!
DUCHESS: The only girl dog in the group!
SCOOPER This seemingly innocent dog has the biggest crush on Duchess and won't run, push or pull unless Duchess is next to him.
MACK: One of the middle dogs...Mack always runs best when he's next to....
DIESEL: Same as Mack!
NANA: An absolutely adorable Border Collie! Nana is the other girl dog in the group and would love to be a lead dog but no-one ever gives her a chance. Lucy loved her company and Nana seems to like Ted too!
(Personally I think some of these names are fantastic!! I could certainly use the name DEMON to describe the little terrier that lives next door to me! Wacko dog!!)
***PLOT***
Meet Ted Brookes! A dentist from Miami, Florida. Ted has always wanted to follow in his father's footsteps and be a dentist...but is that really what he wanted? Ted has his own bachelor pad, smooth sports car and a very successful dental practice where the catchphrase here is:
"We will be with you in a while and we promise to make you smile!"
So on a not particularly unusual day at the office, Ted is visited by his mother. They get chatting and things are fine and dandy and then Ted is presented with a summons to go to Tolketna in Alaska. It's about the Will of one Lucy Watkins. When his mother gets wind of this and nearly chokes, she has to tell her son a small secret....he's adopted. Lucy Watkins is Ted's biological mother!
So reluctantly wishing to know more about his real mother, Ted takes the next bumpy ride out to Tolketna. The temperature is permanently below zero, the high altitude makes it difficult to breathe, Tolketna is absolutely tiny and the people are a little more unconventional to what Ted is used to. When Lucy's Will is read out she leaves Ted her home and all it's contents.
Ted also meets Barb, the owner of the local diner who was Lucy's friend and boss. She shows him Lucy's home and leaves him to get on with it. So Ted has a little look around the house and learns that Lucy won a cup for taking part in the Artic Challenge. That ain't the only thing he finds in her house. Now what that nice little Will forgot to mention is that this house comes with 8 dogs: 7 rather angry looking husky dogs and 1 very cute Border Collie named Nana.
Next morning Ted gets to learn a lot more. Thunder Jack pays him a visit to tell him that he wants the husky dogs for the Artic Challenge. Ted won't let them go. Barb tells Ted that the Artic Challenge is the biggest dog race around.
BARB: "5 days across 400 miles of the most beautiful and rugged terrain in the world."
Barb forms a bond with Ted and they grow to like each other, and Ted decides to learn how to sled and join the race. Here's where the fun starts, because the dog's aren't going to be very co-operative.
But questions still burn in Ted's mind.....why did his real mother give him up? Who is his real father?
WARNING: HUGE PLOT SPOILER HERE.........DO NOT READ IF YOU DON'T WANNA KNOW!!
It turns out that Thunder Jack is really his dad! When the time comes to take part in the Artic Challenge, Ted refuses and Thunder Jack takes part but gets himself into big trouble. Now Ted must use what he's learned to save his father's life and cross the finish line.
Can't say anymore than that I'm afraid!!
***QUOTES***
(When confronted by a giant bear) TED: "Hey wait let's all be cool, if we're cool they'll be no problems here today."
(When being chased by the bear) TED: "I can see the headlines: Miami Dentist Eaten By Bear!!!!!!!"
TED: "Where ya being coy or is that some sick Alaskan mind game?"
TED: "Place your feet on runners, keeping your wait centered and blah, blah, blah, blah, blah alright.....ok just like a jet-ski with fur!
GUY1: "Zip your lip, that's Thunder Jack!" GUY2: "They call him that cos he got hit by thunder.....twice!" TED: "You can't get hit by thunder!" (Everyone nods yes!)
***MY PERSONAL OPINION***
I think Cuba Gooding Jr is fantastic in this film. Much of the comedy comes from him. Even when he pretends to be angry, he's just hilarious!! The tension between him and his dad, Thunder Jack is brilliant as Jack doesn't want anything to do with him and as a result, the two of them are always trying to outsmart each other!
Although there is a lot of slapstick comedy in this film, that alone is not enough to hold up the title of a good film. The storyline was disappointing because the idea was that a guy who was never told about being adopted finds out and decides to go looking for some answers. Not being funny but that is the kind of thing that gets talked about in a 50 minute Ricki Lake talk show!!
Unfortunately the story line in this film is not really satisfactory at keeping audiences interested. What kept me awake in this movie was seeing what Ted was going to do to himself next!
Overall the characters never really grew in the film. Backgrounds were not explored and if they were it's only because they were a component of the thin plot line, but saying that...it's a disney film. I don't think disney have ever made a film that involved much drama or conflict.
One other thing I did enjoy was the soundtrack to this film. There are several nice tunes in here, and being a piano player, I really love film music and have the piano music for some of the songs at home! I do not know if the soundtrack to this film can be bought but I'd imagine so if you can get your hands on the piano music!!
James Coburn is a great actor, and filled the shoes of his role perfectly. Sadly he died of a heart attack on 18 November 2002 and is greatly missed.
As always I leave the decision as to whether or not you watch this!
Advantages: Lots of cute doggies Disadvantages: Unsure
...So when I heard about Snow Dogs and that Cuba Gooding Jr was to take the lead role I knew this was going to be good.
I first watched this at the cinema and then forgotten about it until my partner bought it for me on DVD. It's one that my niece enjoys and I do too, what a bonus.

Ice, snow, cold, sled and dogs a total recipe for a hilarious fun filled film. Not to mention the icy Thunder Jack who is trying to cheat Ted out of the dogs.

Miami dentist Ted travels to Alaska after finding out that his birth mother who lived there (who he never knew, after finding out that he was adopted) has just died. It turns out that she has left him a pack of huskey dogs, in her will. Ted is very much a city guy and doesn't know the first thing about huskey dogs, so initially he thinks about selling them to the highest ... ...who his birth mother was and getting to know the dogs (plus also wondering who in the community could possibly be his biological father too), the more he feels he should take the dogs on and learn to be able to race them, as his mother used to when she was alive.
- Genre/Type of Movie -
This is very much a kids/family comedy adventure movie.
- Thoughts & Opinions -
This is a pretty typical Disney movie that I'd imagine most young kids would enjoy. ...

Advantages: Great views of Siberian Huskies, easy to follow plot Disadvantages: Not enough doggy action
...year’s Disney pooch release – Snow Dogs. Out on video in the UK from the 7th October, this film has been on my must see list since I knew it was being produced. Rated PG due to ‘mild crude humour’, I was left wondering when I missed the innuendo, as the film could easily have been ungraded in my eyes.
There are so few storylines running through the thread of the film, that I’d hate to give any games away. I hope that by introducing the characters ... ...has acted before whereas the Snow Dogs website says that the Siberians are not acting dogs, but proper sled dogs from Alaska and Canada which would probably explain why we do not see as much of them as the title indicates.

As you could probably guess Ted tries to lead the team of sled dogs and we follow their antics during this period of discovery. It takes us across the cold snowy tundra into encounters with a bear, a skunk and to mountain ...

Snow Dogs is such a great family film and one which me and my hubby both enjoy. The film stars Cuba Gooding Junior which is a bonus for me as I do like him in all the films he has done.

When he arrives in Alaska he meets some very funny people who all live in the small town of Tolketna where his biological mother, Lucy lived. Advantages: Fun family Disney film Disadvantages: Nothing special
Snow Dogs is one of those cheesy Disney family movies that you can't help liking. It was released in 2002 and stars Cuba Gooding Jr, who had recently broken into the main casting scene on the big screen. The film is essentially a poignant comedy which features some clever special effects work and that traditional addition of classic Disney family movies: animals!
Dr Ted Brooks is a successful dentist who hates dogs. When he finds out he has inherited ... ...family movie. I enjoyed watching Snow Dogs with my wife the other week. It was the second time I had watched it, and it still brought a smile to my face, and a slight tear to my wife's.
The DVD is available from amazon.co.uk for £4.98, and although it's a nice film, I personally wouldn't worry about buying it. ...

DVD Description
Director Brian Levant (BEETHOVEN) goes to the dogs again in Disney's SNOW DOGS. Cuba Gooding, Jr. stars as Ted Brooks, a successful Miami dentist who finds out that he was adopted, and has to travel to Alaska for the reading of his birth mother's will. There, he meets the small community of crazies that were his mother's friends. Barb (Joanna Bacalso), a beautiful bar owner, is the most welcoming. Ted learns that he has inherited his mother's property, including her team of rambunctious sled dogs. A crusty old-timer, Thunder Jack (James Coburn), tries to buy the dogs, but Ted decides he will learn how to race a dogsled, and enter the Arctic Challenge, a local race. Handling the mischievous pooches, particularly the "alpha" dog, Demon, turns out to be much harder than expected. Levant keeps the action moving at a swift pace, particularly during Ted's hilariously disastrous first run with the dogs. Gooding clowns like a pro, and Coburn is wonderful as the grizzled dogsled veteran. Kids will fall in love with all the dogs, who are given animated facial expressions. Nichelle Nichols (of STAR TREK fame) plays Ted's mom, and pop star Sisqo plays his best friend back in Miami.
