'Snatch' steps into the director's chair for the first time with 'Layer Cake'. Based upon JJ Connelly's London crime novel 'Layer Cake' is about a successful cocaine dealer (Daniel Craig) who has earned a respected place among England's Mafia elite and plans an early retirement from the business. However big boss Jimmy Price (Cranham) hands down a tough assignment: find Charlotte Ryder the missing rich princess daughter of Jimmy's old pal Edward (Gambon) a powerful construction business player and gossip papers socialite. Complicating matters are two million pounds' worth of Grade A ecstasy a brutal neo-Nazi sect and a whole series of double crossings... The title 'Layer Cake' refers to the layers or levels the dealer has to go through as he painstakingly plots his own escape. What is revealed is a modern underworld where the rules have changed. There are no 'codes' or 'families' and respect lasts as long as a line. Not knowing who he can trust he has to use all his 'savvy' 'telling' and skills which make him one of the best to escape his own. The ultimate last job a love interest called Tammy and an international drugs ring threaten to draw him back into the 'cake mix'. But time is running out and the penalty will endure a lifetime.. Snatch: Guy Ritchie writer/director of 'Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels' delivers another awe-inspiring directorial masterpiece. 'Snatch' is an edgy and hilarious film about a diamond heist gone wrong a colourful Irish gypsy turned prizefighter and a very temperamental dog. In the heart of gangland two novice unlicensed boxing promoters Turkish (Jason Statham) and Tommy (Stephen Graham) get roped into organising a bare-knuckled fight with local kingpin villain and fellow boxing promoter Brick Top (Alan Ford). But it all goes wrong when Brick Top's fighter who is rigged to win is suddenly knocked out by the boys' wildcard Irish gypsy boxer One Punch Mickey O'Neil (Brad Pitt). Unfortunately things go from bad to worse as Mickey starts playing by his own rules and the duo find they are heading for a whole lot of trouble. Meanwhile en route to New York to deliver a stolen 84-carat diamond to head honcho Avi (Dennis Farina) Franky Four Fingers (Benicio Del Toro) is robbed of the stone. Forced to jump on the next plane to London Avi is by no means pleased. He hires local legend Bullet Tooth Tony (Vinnie Jones) to find Franky and the diamond. The hunt for the missing stone launches everyone into a spiral of double-crossing vendettas as different parties pursue personal agendas some of them farcical most of them illegal and all of them destined to spin completely out of control...

~ ~ Ever since I watched the first movie in the “British Gangster” mould, “Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels”, by director Guy Ritchie, I have been waiting in anticipation for his follow up offering. “Snatch” (2001) is that second offering, and while it unquestionably leans heavily on the style of his first movie, it is, none the less, a full-throttle comedy crime caper in its own right. Snatch takes a motley crew of eccentric and larger than life characters and tosses them into a mixer, which ends up producing a film full of danger, double-cross, and dark comedy, and, off course, a dog. (more on the woofer later)
~ ~ Our hero, if he can indeed be called such, is a villain by the name of “Turkish”, (Jason Statham) whose main business ventures are illegal slot machines and promoting unlicensed, bare knuckle boxing matches. His business partner, right hand man, and best friend is another extremely dodgy character by the name of “Tommy” (Stephen Graham) They become involved with the local bigwig in the crime scene “Brick Top” (Alan Ford) when they pit their own boxer against his bruiser in a high stakes match, which has, naturally enough, a pre-ordained outcome. (it’s rigged) Their fighter is accidentally incapacitated in a fight with Mickey O'Neil (Brad Pitt), an Irish gypsy who speaks a language all of his own, (I understood just a “little” of what he was saying, living as I do in the Emerald Isle) while they are negotiating a deal involving a caravan. So the gypsy, “One Punch Mickey”, so called because of his ability to lay low any opponent with a solitary blow, is drafted in as a replacement. Off course, Brick Top insists that the outcome of the rearranged boxing match should remain the same, with his man coming out the victor. Brick Top has a rather disconcerting habit of chopping up people who double cross him, and then feeding them to his man-eating pigs, so Turkish and Tommy are more than a little concerned that the result of the match should be as he wishes. But Mad Mickey the Gippo has ideas of his own in that department, and is incapable of lying down for any man, huge stakes match or not!! I thought that Brad Pitt was truly excellent as Mickey, a role he must have found very difficult, given the requirement of a thick Irish accent, which he managed almost perfectly.
~ ~ Now for that amazing dog, a pit bull terrier (what else) that Tommy inherits as part of his deal with the gypsies. It turns up throughout the film, and provides some highly amusing moments, not least when it decides to swallow a squeaky toy whole, and thereafter goes around squeaking instead of barking. Later, it gets very involved in some of the more violent scenes on its own behalf, with some hilarious (and painful) consequences. I’m not going to give too much away here, as the dog was one of the film’s comedy highlights. (at least for me) That it didn’t even get a mention in the credits at the end must surely rank as one of the biggest injustices of the year.
~ ~ This storyline on its own would have made a good plot for most movies, but director Ritchie mixes in dozens of other fascinating characters and overlapping stories, just in case there is ever the slightest possibility of the film having a slow moment. The other main story revolves around an American hoodlum called Frankie Four Fingers.(Benicio Del Toro) He and his three henchmen have stolen a massive 86-carat diamond from a firm of Jewish jewellers in Antwerp, gaining access to their inner sanctum by the ingenious ploy of disguising themselves as Hasidim. (Orthodox Jews) The huge gem is to be delivered to Frankie's boss Avi (Dennis Farina) back in the States, so to keep it safe from thieving hands in the meantime, Frankie comes up with the less than clever idea of securing it in a briefcase which is always attached by a chain to his arm. I say “less than clever” as you can probably surmise that it is, in fact, eventually stolen from him, and he ends up losing more than just the diamond!!
~ ~ There are many links between the two stories, that usually centre on a mad and seemingly indestructible lunatic of a Russian called “Boris The Blade”. (Rade Serbedzija) An ex-KGB agent now living in London, who makes most of his money through arms dealing and crime, he appears to be able to take more bullets than an extra in a Sylvester Stallone movie, and still come back for more. Added to this mix is a trio of two-bit crooks who run a less than legal pawnshop. Sol (Lennie James) and Vincent (Robbie Gee), along with a two-ton getaway driver called Tyrone (Ade), make an inept robbery team who are hired by Boris to steal the diamond from Frankie Four Fingers. Tyrone is so fat that he can hardly get in and out of the getaway car, and his driving abilities are about on the same level as a totally blind novice, which leads to even more high comedy.
~ ~ When the diamond is stolen from Frankie Four Fingers, his boss Avi arrives post haste from the States to supervise its reacquisition. He is pally with Doug "the Head" (Mike Reid from Eastenders), a gentile jeweller who pretends to everyone that he's Jewish as he believes it will benefit his business. (which it does) Together they hire “Bullet Tooth Tony” (the one and only Vinny Jones) to help them track down the missing diamond. Vinny Jones has become more than a little typecast in this “hard man” role since his move from the soccer pitch at Wimbledon to the greener fields of Hollywood, but there is no question that he has the part down to a “T”, and his performance here had me in stitches. The scene where he has a showdown with the three bungling bandits, Sol, Vincent and Tyrone, in a London pub, is sheer brilliance. The three would be villains threaten Tony with replica pistols, a fact he catches onto very quickly, and he then produces a massive “Desert Eagle 50” of his own. The ensuing mayhem has to be seen to be believed.
~ ~ One other thing to look out for is the song "Lucky Star", the vintage melody from Madonna, that Guy Ritchie manages to work into the film as a concession to his recent nuptials with the “Material Girl” herself. But enough. If you want to know any more about this movie, then make the trip down to your local video shop and rent or buy this incredibly funny film for yourself. It’s a journey you’ll not regret. High marks for this one from the “mad cabbie”.
Advantages: great film, violent + funny! Disadvantages: slightly confusing!
...was eager to see whether Snatch would live up to its predecessor!
Both films are based around the same genre - that being british gangsters and both are amazingly good films. Although the basic plotlines are very similar Snatch is still very similar and if you enjoyed Guy Ritchies first gangster movie then you will almost certainly enjoy this second one! Where Lock Stocks storyline revolved around card games and antique rifles, Snatch revolves around ... ...on!
The acting in Snatch is of a high standard and each actor is very believable in their parts, Brad Pitt plays the excellent role of Mickey and has a clear, bleievable irish accent which maintains its strength all the way through the film! Brick Top, played by Alan Ford is not only feared by the other characters but he actually started to scare me with his threatening acting! Guy Ritchie has yet again excelled himself in a great film that manages ...

Advantages: Thrilling storyline, excellent character performances Disadvantages: May be similar to Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels, but who cares?
This movie has similar traits to that of Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels. The main reason behind this is because these films are both directed by Guy Ritchie.
Firstly im going to give you a run down of the characters in the film.
The characters:
'Turkish' (Jason Statham)
His main business is dealing in illegal slot machines and promoting unlicensed, bare knuckle boxing matches for betting. He is a tough guy with the ability to keep his cool, ... ...'Tommy' (Stephen Graham) He is always seen with 'Turkish', as he is his business partner and right hand man. He is a very strange dodgy character who is slightly on the dumb side and certainly not a 'hard man'.
'Brick Top' (Alan Ford) He is the main man behind the illegal boxing crimes. Turkish and Tommy get involved with him after putting one of their boxer's against his in a high stakes match, which turns out to be fixed.
'Mickey O'Neil' (Brad ...

...to name 2) Snatch is a two-disc DVD set - which means loads of extras to watch, you’ve got deleted scenes, a commentary by Guy Ritchie himself (which is really witty) a ‘Stealing Stone’ feature. There is also the obligatory “Making of” section as well as loads of other extras like the normal TV spots and trailers. There is so much that has been shoved into this release, look out for all the hidden extras tucked away ...

Advantages: Excellent script and very funny Disadvantages: Vinnie Jones is on screen
Guy Ritchie’s first film, Lock Stock…, was a crime caper based on several gangs all vowing for the same merchandise. Said merchandise changed hands frequently and the film ended with a big showdown involving all the main characters in the movie.
Seen as though everyone loved this movie, Mr Ritchie has seen fit not to change all that much for his second outing, but do we care?
The merchandise in this case is a diamond, a bloody BIG diamond ... ...hands on. First off there’s Frankie Four Fingers (Benicio Del Toro), the guy who originally steals the diamond in the action packed intro sequence. He’s a bugger for gambling; it will be his downfall. Then there’s Boris, a mad Russian who cannot, it seems, be killed, hence his nickname (see the movie!).
Next comes Avi, Frankies cousin and it would appear, advisor on all things diamonds and pearls.
Throw into this already multi-cultural ...

Inevitably the boy Ritchie wasn’t content with just being Madonna’s other half and was soon back with Snatch, a sort of Lock Stock 2, but with a few extra laughs. All the split screens and quasi monochromatic shots are there along with a healthy dose of bad guys who would ...

Advantages: Great film, great acting Disadvantages: Might cause offence
Back in Guy Ritchie's pre Madonna days when he released a film called Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. This turned out to be a huge success and he soon released Snatch which was essentially the same kind of film but still quite different.
Based in London, Snatch is about the crime underworld associated with underground boxing. Turkish (Jason Statham) is a boxing promoter who, with the aid of his sidekick Tommy (Stephen Graham), decide to promote one of their boxers, Gorgeous George, against a fighter from another promoter, Brick Top (Alan Ford). Unfortunately, due to an incident involving Tommy, George, a caravan and Mickey O'Neil (Brad Pitt), George is no longer able to fight and so Turkish has to find a replacement for George. Because of this it means that all bets taken upto this point and no longer valid and so Brick Top has ...
Advantages: Full of action, Funny and great film Disadvantages: None, a bit violent for the younger viewers
This film..what can i say? Its my best film. If you like gangster films Guy Richie is the one to turn too. Snatch is the sequel to Lock stocks and its even better. It has some great qutoes in which will make you laugh (well they made me laugh).
The plot
The plot is similar in style and content to Lock, Stock... but it has a certain flair of it's own and stands out as a fantastic movie. Boxing promoter Turkish gets an Irish gipsy, ?One Punch? Mickey O'Neil to box for him after he?s beaten their best boxer up whilst buying a caravan. Unfortunately, Mickey has his own ideas about boxing rules and the promoters? start finding themselves on the wrong end of trouble. Meanwhile, a giant 86 carat diamond is stolen by thief Freddy Four Fingers, who is now trying to get to America to get rid of it, but is followed by fellow rough guy Bullet ...
Advantages: Great quickpaced story and fine characters Disadvantages: Could have been a little bit longer
Snatch.. the movie that is in a class of its own. Directed and written by Guy Ritchie, it is his finest creative effort.
It has a great combination of comedy and action, and its powerful dialogues like," Never underestimate the predictability of stupidity!" by Bullet Tooth Tony, steal the show.
The cast is wonderful. Brad Pitt as Mickey O'Neil, has played a piker, and he means business. Bullet Tooth Tony played by Vinnie jones has given a powerful performance. Boris 'The Blade' Yurinov, played by Rade Serbedgia, is both funny and dangerous. Alan Ford as the cold blooded 'Brick Top'and Jason Statham as 'Turkish' have delivered a fine performance.
Turkish is a young man with an entrepreneurial bent, who runs a gambling operation and also manages bare knuckle boxers. Through a business deal gone wrong, he loses all his boxers ...
Turkish and Tommy, unlicensed boxing promoters, become unwillingly involved with a underground criminal called Brick Top. When they are persuaded to stage rigged bare knuckle fights things don't go exactly to plan...

DVD Description
A wild and tangled crime adventure involving gangsters, Irish gypsies, and a dog that can't stop swallowing things, SNATCH is both hilarious and action-packed. Jewel thief Franky Four Fingers (Benicio Del Toro) is in London en route to New York, where he will deliver an 86-karat diamond to his boss, Avi (Dennis Farina). A compulsive gambler, Franky is tempted into an illegal boxing scam, becoming the unwitting suspect in a robbery committed by bumbling pawnshop owners Vinny (Robbie Gee), Sol (Lennie James), and their oaf-of-a-driver, Tyrone (Ade). Meanwhile, novice boxing promoter Turkish (Jason Statham), and his dim-witted partner, Tommy (Stephen Graham), move into the "big time" with twisted crime boss, Brick Top (Alan Ford), and Mickey, a mumbling, unhinged Irish gypsy boxer (Brad Pitt) and his band of travelling Pykies (including Paul O'Boyle as Paddy). Thrown into the proceedings are killers Bullet Tooth Tony (Vinnie Jones) and Boris the Blade (Rade Sherbedgia). A stylized work with a gritty urban soundtrack and a cast of intricately developed characters, SNATCH delivers superb and witty dialogue while depicting one of the more zany, complex diamond heists ever portrayed in film.
