Looking at the plot description and cast list I was expecting an amazing film from 'Smoking Aces', a film starring Jeremy Piven, Ryan Reynolds, Ben Affleck, Andy Garcia, Ray Liotta and Alicia Keys should be great. This wasn't. It was, unfortunately, far from great.
The idea behind this film is a good one; Buddy 'Aces' Isreal is a Las Vegas magician turned mafia informant who has a million dollar price put on his head by mob boss Primo Sparazza whose instructions dictate that he wants Aces' heart brought to him once he has been killed. This attracts all manner of psychos and hitmen (and women) who all descend upon Las Vegas in order to find Aces and claim their prize. The film never really lives up to its potential and sometimes seems to complex. Some of the plot twists (and there are a few) are difficult to keep on top of, especially considering that they all seem to take place at the same time. What should have been a fun black-comedy/action film has turned out being a complex film which, at times, is hard to watch.
There are some amusing parts and some of the action scenes are really great. This film is only let down by the way some of the plot lines are portrayed. I also found it difficult to understand what the 'Tremors' (a team of assassins) were saying for pretty much all of their dialogue. The subtitle option was useful here.
The last five minutes of the film, once all of the plot twists had been dealt with, were fairly predicible and quite disappointing.
This is worth watching if you have some spare time but I wouldn't have high expectations.
