The story: Sleeping Beauty follows the tale of Aurora - baby Princess to King Stefan and his wife. When she is born they throw a huge party to celebrate and to this party comes the Prince Phillip, the Prince she will marry and the three good fairies, Fauna, Flora and Merryweather. The three good fairies give gifts to the Princess but unhappy with the arrival of the Princess the evil witch Maleficent decides to pay a visit and give her own gift - that the princess will prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel and die on her 16th birthday - she tells them the only way she will live is if she is kissed by her true love. Horrified the King and Queen decide to let Aurora be brought up by the three fairies deep in the woods and burn all the spinning wheels in the land.
Years later on her 16th birthday, the Princess is happily off out into the woods to pick fruit sent out by the three fairies who she thinks are her Aunts and in the woods she meets Phillip - both unaware of who each other is they fall in love. However when her Aunts later on reveal who she really is and take her back to the castle to her parents the evil witch find her and follow her there.
Will the evil witch be able to carry off her evil plan and will Prince Phillip and Aurora finally realise who each other is?
The cast: Obviously the cast is animated but the voices of the characters are done by real people and the main characters and who did their voices are listed below:
Aurora - Mary Costa Phillip - Bill Shirley Fauna - Barbara Jo Allen Merryweather - Barbara Luddy Flora - Verna Felton Malecifent - Eleanor Audley
Interesting fact: Several of the story's point for this film came about from discarded ideas from Snow White.
The castle in Disneyworld was so called Sleeping Beauty's castle even though the park opened 4 years before the release of the film.

Overall opinion: The reason I like this film so much is because it is the classic fairytale. The film really appeals to young girls especially, who will want to be a beautiful princess! The film has all the usual Disney aspects you'd expect from a classic like this with the songs that children come to know. This particular film has the song 'once upon a dream' I love how the film has the cute animals in and let's face it what classic Disney film doesn't? The fairies are cute and humorous and overall it is just a perfect fairytale story with the Prince and Princess. I would highly recommend anyone to watch this film as it's something the whole family can enjoy together. The film has 'U' rating meaning it is suitable for all ages. The film is available to buy from various online stores with prices varying so have a look around for the best deal - I was bought my copy as a present but after having a look prices seem around the £12 mark.
Also on other review sites by me under either frankiecesca or frankie1984.
Advantages: Simply Disney Disadvantages: You may wear the DVD out.
When someone says SleepingBeauty my first thought is the ballet. I saw the Royal Ballet perform SleepingBeauty a few years ago at the ENO whilst the ROH was being refurbished and it was magical. I completly forgot Disneys classic, although I must have watched it a hundred times as a child, how soon we forget but how lovely to discover again.
So how does a cartoon compare to to the Ballet, quite simply it doesn't and shouldn't.
In time honoured fashion the Disney Film captures the story with all the elements you'd expect. Fantastic score which you just can't help singing along to, loveable characters and sinister characters. The story is told with all the flair and artistry one comes to not only expect but is an absolute must from Disney.
Young or old this is a film that could quite easily keep you entertained for an hour ...
Advantages: Beautiful animation, wonderful singing Disadvantages: Annoying blue fairy!
THE DISNEY LOOK
When Disney's 'SleepingBeauty' was first released in 1959 it was absolutely vilified by most of America's critics. At the time people could not see the film for what it was; a wonderful piece of art. Instead they made unfair comparisons between 'SleepingBeauty' and other films such as 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs' which was from a different era. Techniques in film making had improved exponentially since the 1930's, and somehow creators at Disney managed to give 'SleepingBeauty' a fairytale look all of its own.
Today however it is viewed much more kindly, and has been on constant release on either VHS or DVD since the late 1980's. I purchased the latest copy of the DVD last summer for £19.99, which seems rather steep. However, Disney DVD's are special as they are crammed full of extras, and so worth the price ...
Advantages: Beautifully realised, the best Disney Villain Ever, a magnificent artistic vision with a fabulous score, nominated for an Oscar Disadvantages: some scary parts
I re-watched SleepingBeauty this weekend for the first time in years doing some research for our annual Christmas pantomime. As I sat with my mug of coffee in my hands, not taking my eyes off the screen, I was whisked away to the Land of Make Believe ...
** INTRODUCTION **
This is a film that marks the end of the Disney classic era. Released in 1959, it was the culmination of Disney's animation art during its classic phase. Taking seven years and costing nearly seven million dollars to make, this film represents the pinnacle of Disney filmmaking. Walt Disney's "SleepingBeauty" was billed as the ultimate animated film. This is a heavy claim to make, but I am sure you will all agree, it is well deserved.

DVD Description
A beautiful princess born in a faraway kingdom is destined by a terrible curse to prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel and fall into a deep sleep which can only be awakened by true love's first kiss. Though the titular princess is on par with the rest of Disney's essential heroines, most of the fun arises from the trio of charming fairies entrusted with her care: Flora, Fauna, and Meriweather. Meanwhile the evil Malificent may just be Disney's most chilling villainess. This classic makes wondrous use of Tchaikovsky's same-titled ballet score, which earned SLEEPING BEAUTY an Academy Award nomination for Best Scoring of a Musical Picture.
