Six Feet Under is set in the world of death. The Fishers are a family of undertakers who have been affected by the death of their father in a car accident. Nate Fisher has returned from living in Seattle where he accepts his fate as an undertaker while having a relationship with a woman he met on the airplane home. David Fisher is a closet homosexual who is struggling to hide his sexuality in a religious line of work. Claire ... more
I’ve often stated in previous opinions that American TV shows are currently the best thing on the box. Many things could be attributed to this but most it can be put down to the fact that they put their money into good shows while the likes of the BBC and ITV put it into countless reality TV shows and dull sitcoms.

Nate Fisher has returned from living in Seattle where he accepts his fate as an undertaker while having a relationship with a woman he met on the airplane home. Claire Fisher is a troubled teenager in the final years of school while the mother Ruth Fisher is finally starting to live life after the death of her husband.
The first season has a good story arc over 13 episodes. Each one expect the pilot starts with the death of someone, this then leads to some story development as the characters relate something to the deceased as they prepare the body for the funeral. The show is brilliantly scripted and acted. It also has a lot of great dark humour and you’ll often find characters lapsing into dream sequences and impromptu dance numbers. It also opens with some majestic opening titles and a great theme tune. I only caught up with the first season on DVD after Channel 4 fantastically banded the first season around a few different time slots. I didn’t see the second season due to Channel 4 making the genius decision of scheduling it midway through the second season of 24. Needless to say after watching this series I’ll be getting future seasons when they arrive on DVD.
The first season comes in a 4-disc set contained in a digipack. The outer packaging is an attractive cardboard case that is more than sturdy, it’s also attractive.
Each episode is presented in its original 1.33:1 aspect ratio. The transfer is excellent and superior to your normal broadcast quality. The colours are bold and striking while the blacks remain black and the whites are pure as snow. It’s one of the best TV presentations I’ve seen. The Dolby Digital 5.1 sound mix is also decent enough, it has some good surround action but as a dramatic show there’s not much room whistles and bells.
Special mention must also go to the menus. They are beautifully sombre and fit in with the mood of the show perfectly. Each episode selection comes with a brief episode synopsis and you can also select ‘previously on’ recaps as well as ‘next on’ previews of the next episode. I’d previously seen this used on the Sopranos releases but it’s something I wish other TV releases would adopt.
You also get a decent set of extras for the season. The first disc comes with an interesting look at how the opening credits were created. It runs for 15-minutes but covers a lot of ground and thankfully skips on a lot of promo fluff. Creator Alan Ball provides commentaries for the pilot and season finale. These tracks are informative although at times Ball doesn’t divert from narrating what’s happening on screen. Next is a 20-minute promo that features cast and crew interviews. Most of it is generally fluff and it’s a little annoying, as they appear to be talking mainly about the second season. Finally you have two music selections, namely Thomas Newman’s wonderful opening credits music and a Kid Loco music that frankly is a bit dull.
Of course you also get the usual cast/crew biographies.
For around £35-40 I would say Six Feet Under is well worth the purchase, every episode runs for close to an hour so there’s a good amount of content. The quality of the show is also excellent and anyone who likes off0beat and interesting drama should take a look.
Advantages: Excellent actors, beautifully realized Disadvantages: Only 13 episodes in each season
Hello everyone, my second review will be about the wonderful American series "Six Feet Under". It was created in 2001 by Alan Ball (also creator of the movie "American Beauty") for the American channel HBO (where you could also watch "The Sopranos", "Sex and the City", among others...) It was really successful in the US and it received a certain number of awards, prooving the high quality of the show.

...The whole concept of six feet under is totally original and new and it could have been a real flop but this series doesn't fail to get the viewer gripped and I can only tell that it goes from strength to strength from there on. This season is definitely the worst of the six seasons but this didn't become apparent to me until we finished all of the series. It's far from bad though and still does a good job of keeping you hooked. Don't give up on this ...

Advantages: Excellent DVD production, Good special features, Fanastic series Disadvantages: Collectors edition box a bit flimsy.
...there are some exceptions, including Six Feet Under.
This series is fantastic.
It is a dark comedy drama set in Fisher and Sons Funeral Home in LA. Not wishing to give too much away, when Nathanial Fisher dies unexpectedly the rest of the Fisher family have the task of taking over the funeral home along with all the blood, sweat and tears involved.
The comedy in this series is extremely dark, although it is in places more lighthearted than series ... ...(as you may expect), and in others it is funny and witty.
The series stars Peter Krause (as Nate), Michael C. Hall (as David), Frances Conroy (as Ruth), Lauren Ambrose (as Claire), Rachel Griffiths (as Brenda), and Freddy Rodriquez (as Federico - in my opinion the best character). All the acting is superb!
The series is produced and co-written by Alan Ball who won an Oscar for writing American Beauty.
The series also features the best title sequence ...

Advantages: Gives an insight into death Disadvantages: Have to watch it from the start to truly understand it
Six feet under it an amazing series. Now on to its third season on channel 4 and starting a fourth season on satalite tv.
A dark humour, six feet truly brings death to life again as Alan Ball and the help of Thomas Newman (music & soundtracks) makes another fascinating programme.
If you enjoyed American Beauty then this is another series for you!
Set in a Funeral Home in America, the family has to cope with the death of their father and have to ... ...on six feet under and that is what makes the viewer think more about death.
Never before has a programme of such quality or of this subject been aired. It has to be the best series to come out of America in a long, long time!!!
Truly amazing! ...

DVD Description
The television series SIX FEET UNDER, about the members of a dynamic Los Angeles-based family that operates the Fischer and Sons Funeral Home, has an ironically grim, but intriguing premise: each episode is based on the death and extenuating circumstances of the family's current client. When a porno star dies and is brought to Fischer and Sons, an entourage of her former costars appear to mourn her death. In another episode, the family must negotiate with tough Mexican-American gang members who have very specific requests for the funeral of one of their brethren. A sassy drama that is rife with black comedy, SIX FEET UNDER follows other hit series like SEX IN THE CITY and THE SOPRANOS. Alan Ball created the hit series after scoring a huge success with his original screenplay for AMERICAN BEAUTY. Ball has written and directed several of the 13 episodes that comprise this first season.
